Magic Realism
Magic Realism Magic Realism is a literary movement associated MOVEMENT ORIGIN with a style of writing or technique that incorpo- rates magical or supernatural events into realistic c. 1940 narrative without questioning the improbability of these events. This fusion of fact and fantasy is meant to question the nature of reality as well as call attention to the act of creation. By making lived experience appear extraordinary, magical realist writers contribute to a re-envisioning of Latin-American culture as vibrant and complex. The movement originated in the fictional writing of Spanish American writers in the mid-twentieth century and is generally claimed to have begun in the 1940s with the publication of two important novels: Men of Maize by Guatemalan writer Miguel Angel Asturias and The Kingdom of This World by Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier. What is most striking about both of these novels is their ability to infuse their narratives with an atmos- phere steeped in the indigenous folklore, cultural beliefs, geography, and history of a particular geographic and political landscape. However, at the same time that their settings are historically correct, the events that occur may appear improb- able, even unimaginable. Characters change into animals, and slaves are aided by the dead; time reverses and moves backward, and other events occur simultaneously. Thus, magic realist works present the reader with a perception of the world where nothing is taken for granted and where anything can happen. 437 Magic Realism The fantastical qualities of this style of writ- ing were heavily influenced by the surrealist movement in Europe of the 1920s and literary avant-gardism as well as by the exotic natural surroundings, native and exiled cultures, and tumultuous political histories of Latin America.

ALL ABOARD - INTRODUCTION According to the California Supreme Court, operators of roller coasters and similar amusement park rides should be held to the same safety standards that apply to buses, planes, and other modes of public transportation.' The court's dubious 4-3 decision in Gomez v. Disney means that when a lower court adjudicates negligence claims against an amusement park, it will have to hold thrill rides to an utmost safety standard, rather than the reasonable care standard, which would likely be extraordinary diligence.2 On first impression, one might find little difference between utmost care and extraordinarydiligence.

I refused to jump off a diving board, I President’s Column 1 wouldn’t let anyone push me too high on a swing, and I would only hang from my arms on the monkey bars — never my knees, like the other kids. After begging my Club Info 2 parents to send me to overnight camp in 4th grade, I spent the first evening in the la- trine, pretending to be sick so my parents would be called to pick me up. Evergreen State Fair Ride Descriptions 2017 Subject to change without notice SPECTACULAR RIDES Spin Out The Spin Out is one of the most exciting rides on the midway. Made in England it stands 45 feet high and has 6 – 4 passenger seats. Passengers sit in one of four seats on the outside edge of the ride. As the Spin Out begins to rise six sets of seats begin to spin. Up, down and around passengers thrill to the sight and feel of Spin Out. There are only 8 Spinouts on traveling carnivals in the United States. Footloose Thrill-seekers have touted this ride as one of the Midway’s “craziest!” On the Footloose the ride’s two gigantic arms loop counter-clockwise to each other, turning completely upside down. Riders are secured by over the shoulder harnesses while their legs dangle free in the open air. This ride is sure to thrill even the bravest of riders Rock Star Our Rockin’ themed ride will light up the midway to the delight of fairgoers. The Rock Star is a platform ride with two tiered stadium style seating the moves up and over in a circular fashion as riders leave their stomach behind. Zillerator Coaster Up, down and around aboard a car for four, passengers enjoy the Zillerator coaster! The Zillerator will attract all thrill seekers, standing at 48 1/2 feet tall, it has 6 cars each capable of holding up to 4 people. A ride for teens and adults, the Zillerator sends riders on a thrilling trip over the tracks – curving, rising and descending – a journey for the bravest.

Freak Out The Freak Out, manufactured by KMG –Netherlands boasts an energy efficient light package utilizing LED’s which produce clear bright color while using 90% less power to operate.
