  • Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations
Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Updated October 17, 2017 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R44094 Bangladesh and Bangladesh-U.S. Relations Summary Bangladesh (the former East Pakistan) is a Muslim-majority nation in South Asia, bordering India, Burma, and the Bay of Bengal. It is the world’s eighth most populous country with nearly 160 million people living in a land area about the size of Iowa. It is an economically poor nation, and it suffers from high levels of corruption. In recent years, its democratic system has faced an array of challenges, including political violence, weak governance, poverty, demographic and environmental strains, and Islamist militancy. The United States has a long-standing and supportive relationship with Bangladesh, and it views Bangladesh as a moderate voice in the Islamic world. In relations with Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital, the U.S. government, along with Members of Congress, has focused on a range of issues, especially those relating to economic development, humanitarian concerns, labor rights, human rights, good governance, and counterterrorism. The Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) dominate Bangladeshi politics. When in opposition, both parties have at times sought to regain control of the government through demonstrations, labor strikes, and transport blockades, as well as at the ballot box. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been in office since 2009, and her AL party was reelected in January 2014 with an overwhelming majority in parliament—in part because the BNP, led by Khaleda Zia, boycotted the vote. The BNP has called for new elections, and in recent years, it has organized a series of blockades and strikes.

  • The Situation Information Bulletin Bangladesh: Floods
Information bulletin Bangladesh: Floods Information bulletin n°2 Date of issue: 3 September 2014 Glide n° FL-2014-000117-BGD Date of disaster: August 2014 Point of contact: 1. Md. Belal Hossain, Director, Disaster Response, BDRCS 2. Andreas Weissenberg, Operations Coordinator, AP Zone Host National Societies: Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) This bulletin is being issued for further information following the first bulletin as well as setting the basis for a DREF request to fund continued humanitarian assistance required in the coming days. It reflects the current situation and response, and the immediate intervention that is required for the affected population. The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has principally decided to make a DREF request to provide and scale up assistance to the population affected by the disaster. The situation Since the second week of August, heavy rains in the main river basins and upstream catchments of India, along with continuous rainfall in northwest and north-eastern parts of Bangladesh have caused flooding in low-lying districts. Districts in the north-west of the country were heavily impacted which triggered a Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) to be carried out in nine districts by members of the Humanitarian Coordination Task Team (HCTT). Situation reports from the Disaster Management Information Centre (DMIC) and reports from BDRCS’ local units as well as other NGOs brought attention to the seriousness of flooding in those districts clustered around the north-west (Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Sherpur).

  • Longing, Belonging and Other Stories: Tales of Bengali Identity and Collective Memory
LONGING, BELONGING AND OTHER STORIES: TALES OF BENGALI IDENTITY AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication, Culture and Technology By Proma Huq, B.S. Washington, DC August 14th, 2020 Copyright 2020 by Proma Huq All Rights Reserved ii LONGING, BELONGING AND OTHER STORIES: TALES OF BENGALI IDENTITY AND COLLECTIVE MEMORY Proma Huq, B.S. Thesis Advisor: Diana M. Owen, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Bangladesh is one of the few nations where living citizens can recall being subjects of three different countries, all within one lifetime. Additionally, it is the only nation founded in pursuit of linguistic recognition. This non-traditional study explores the manner in which collective memory is used in nation building, the formation of Bengali identity and the evolution of this identity in the face of political upheaval, war, and for some, eventual migration. By examining the identity politics and cultural implications of establishing collective memory, this project analyzes the pivotal role played by the concept of “imagined communities” (Anderson, 1983) – the idea that nations are socially constructed by constituents who perceive themselves as a group. Using a triangulation of existing literature, a content analysis of era-specific political rhetoric and collected oral histories, this study further examines the arbitrary lines drawn across the former Indian subcontinent, establishing such imagined communities and effectively rendering millions as prisoners of geography. The timeline for this longitudinal study includes: the end of the British Raj, the Partition of 1947, the Bengali Language Movement, and the Bangladeshi Liberation War of 1971, moving onwards into the twenty-first century.

  • Spatial Assessment of Water Quality in Peripheral Rivers of Dhaka City for Optimal Relocation of Water Intake Point
Spatial Assessment of Water Quality in Peripheral Rivers of Dhaka City for Optimal Relocation of Water Intake Point Sayma Rahman Tennessee Technological University Cookeville, TN 38505-0001 Email: [email protected] Submitted to: ESRI USER’s Conference Abstract In order to meet the ever increasing demand of drinking water, Dhaka Water Supply Authority (DWASA) of Bangladesh has installed a number of deep tube wells that tap the upper aquifers. However, in most parts of the city, the current groundwater abstraction exceeds the recharge rate, causing the groundwater to be mined systematically and be depleted of its finite reserve. The present rate of depletion is alarming because it can potentially cause environmental hazards such as land subsidence, prolonged water logging, alteration in vegetation etc. Thus, there is an urgent need to alleviate the demand on the upper aquifers and explore more sustainable sources to augment the present water supply. This implies a conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water in order to maintain the balance between anthropogenic demand and water’s natural availability. However, the surface water along these peripheral rivers is known to be highly polluted due to municipal and industrial untreated wastewaters that are discharged. This study analyzes the present water quality scenario along the surrounding rivers of Dhaka City pertaining to a 2-day field survey during the dry season of 2005. It uses GIS as a tool to arrive at an optimal solution for relocation of the current intake point for surface water withdrawal. Derivation of water quality profiles (as a function of distance) along the downstream and upstream reaches of the current intake location indicated that a new location 12 km upstream of the present intake point could potentially be ideal for withdrawing surface water during the monsoon season.
