Course Description This course is a survey of the wide variety of Ecclesiastical Latin literature. Students read selections from such works as the Code of Canon Law, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica, and St. Augustine’s Confessions. Emphasis is placed on the fluent reading of these works in Latin without the need to translate. Prerequisite: BEL 201/601 or instructor’s approval. II. Course Rationale As the universal language of liturgy, theology, and the day-to-day business of the Church in the west, Latin continues to hold its centuries-old place as a prerequisite for the work undertaken in a theologate. “Particular attention must be given to ensure that before entering the theologate all seminarians can demonstrate that they have acquired that ‘knowledge of Latin which will enable them to understand and make use of the sources of so many sciences and the documents of the Church,’ according to the insistence of the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council” (PPF Fifth Edition, 189). III. Envisioned Outcomes Students will have a broad knowledge of Ecclesiastical Latin vocabulary, including technical and idiomatic expressions. Students will have an appreciation for the richness of Ecclesiastical Latin literature. Students will be able, at least in simpler texts, to engage with Latin as Latin, i.e., without translating. IV. Course Requirements Participate in class and maintain a good attendance record Complete all homework assignments Prepare for tests and the final exam X. Important Dates: all bold entries in the above schedule (section VIII) 3 XI. Evaluation Criteria All homework assignments will be graded for completeness, including the ability to present one’s work in class (counting for 40% of the semester grade). Quizzes for the purpose of self-assessment may occasionally be taken during class; however, these will not count toward the grade. There will be two tests during the semester (together counting for 40% of the semester grade) and a final exam (counting for 20% of the semester grade). XII. Attendance Policy “A student is permitted to be absent from class no more than twice the number of times the class meets per week. The normal penalty for . a violation is the grade ‘FA’ (failure due to absence). The number of absences includes those due to illness, late registration, or any other cause. Absence from class immediately before or after holidays is considered a double cut. Only the Academic Dean may waive penalties for absence” (NDS Catalog, 38). XIII. Academic Integrity “Students of Notre Dame Seminary must commit themselves to responsible scholarship in every aspect of academic formation. This means working and studying to the best of their ability for every course. They also accept responsibilities and obligations as students, which include commitments to honesty, disciplined study, and integrity in their academic work. They will be expected to respect academic scholarship by giving proper credit to other people’s work, while at the same time preparing well for assigned materials and examinations in such a way that their academic integrity will never be questioned” (NDS Catalog, 37). 4.

No connection between pseudo- Clement and Lactantius other than a general resemblance of principles is hinted at. 5. Nearly half of the volume is occupied by an essay by Mr. E. W. Watson on The Style and Language of St. Cyprian, a thorough piece of work. Cyprian's style is marked by extreme rhetorical elaboration, which is here traced in detail with abundant illustration. Cyprian "disliked the style of the Latin Bible; he was also discontented with its vocabulary," especially with its many Greek and its Hebrew words. "There are few of the Greek terms of church use for which he has not essayed to find a Latin synonym." To Tertullian his style shows only contrast. The writer to whom he comes nearest is Apuleius, from whose attractive rhetoric the equally rhetorical treatise Ad Donatum was perhaps designed to draw Christian readers away. The style"'had no doubt been learned by both on African soil. But how far it was peculiar to Africa is a more doubtful point. In its literary aspect it is closely akin to that of Ammianus and the Panegyrists; in its gram- matical to that of Vitruvius." The so-called third and fourth German editions (1951, 1955) were no more than reprints of the second; for the World War which drove Altaner from his beloved Breslau and made him a harassed fugitive from country to country affected his health seriously and slowed his work. Not until 1958 was it possible to bring the second edition up to date; this is listed as the fifth German edition.1 The new edition introduces more than three thousand new bibliographical entries; to make room for these, more than two thousand older references have been dropped.

An Abstract of O Praesul Illustris: Images of the Bishop Patron in Poems of Late Medieval Latin Offices by Catherine Anne Bilow Submitted to the Graduate Faculty as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History The University of Toledo May 2012 During the Middle Ages the Church worked to make official liturgical services unified and universal. Close textual and historical analysis of Latin liturgical documents offers insight into the writers’ method and the sentiments expressed in prayer. The repertory for this study is a set of poems drawn from selected hours of the Divine Office: first vespers, matins, lauds, second vespers. All of the Offices date from the late Middle Ages (A.D. 1100-1500) and were written to honor saints who served as bishops. Although the texts are late medieval, there is a great range in the bishops’ lifetime. A discussion of liturgy and the cycle of celebrations is followed by a consideration of the special Divine Office category: services dedicated to bishop saints.
