M. Keith Booker, PhD Dissertation Director Yajaira M. Padilla, PhD Frank Scheide, PhD Committee Member Committee Member Abstract This project analyzes adaptation in the Hindi film industry and how the concepts of gender and identity have changed from the original text to the contemporary adaptation. The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films.

Bollywood Shakespeares from Gulzar to Bhardwaj: Adapting, Assimilating and Culturalizing the Bard Koel Chatterjee PhD Thesis 10 October, 2017 I, Koel Chatterjee, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 10th October, 2017 Acknowledgements This thesis would not have been possible without the patience and guidance of my supervisor Dr Deana Rankin. Without her ability to keep me focused despite my never-ending projects and her continuous support during my many illnesses throughout these last five years, this thesis would still be a work in progress. I would also like to thank Dr. Ewan Fernie who inspired me to work on Shakespeare and Bollywood during my MA at Royal Holloway and Dr. Christie Carson who encouraged me to pursue a PhD after six years of being away from academia, as well as Poonam Trivedi, whose work on Filmi Shakespeares inspired my research. I thank Dr. Varsha Panjwani for mentoring me through the last three years, for the words of encouragement and support every time I doubted myself, and for the stimulating discussions that helped shape this thesis. Last but not the least, I thank my family: my grandfather Dr Somesh Chandra Bhattacharya, who made it possible for me to follow my dreams; my mother Manasi Chatterjee, who taught me to work harder when the going got tough; my sister, Payel Chatterjee, for forcing me to watch countless terrible Bollywood films; and my father, Bidyut Behari Chatterjee, whose impromptu recitations of Shakespeare to underline a thought or an emotion have led me inevitably to becoming a Shakespeare scholar.

Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin May 2005 To Harold Ashenfelter and Amul Desai Preface A crowded, red double-decker bus pulls into the depot and comes to a rest amidst swirling dust and smoke. Its passengers slowly alight and begin to disperse into the muggy evening air. I step down from the bus and look left and right, trying to get my bearings. This is only my second day in Bombay and my first to venture out of the old city center and into the Northern suburbs. I approach a small circle of bus drivers and ticket takers, all clad in loose-fitting brown shirts and pants. They point me in the direction of my destination, the JVPD grounds, and I join the ranks of people marching west along a dusty, narrowing road. Before long, we are met by a colorful procession of drummers and dancers honoring the goddess Durga through thundering music and vigorous dance. The procession is met with little more than a few indifferent glances by tired workers walking home after a long day and grueling commute.

  • Mathematical Analysis of Money in the Scope of Austerity
Mathematical Analysis of Money in the Scope of Austerity Peter Stallinga University of The Algarve e-mail: [email protected] October 15, 2018 Abstract This summarizes the study of the financial and economic crisis in Europe. The starting questions were 1) Why do we have a crisis? Unde venis? 2) What will be the outcome? Quo vadis? Here is the reasoning which touches many areas, ranging from financial to politics and from psychology and economy. arXiv:1305.5373v3 [q-fin.GN] 10 Jun 2013 1 1 Political The political idea and the political measures, ’austerity’, are based on a simple and single myth. Namely that economic growth is stopped when the national debt reaches a critical limit of 90% of the GDP. This comes from a single scientific article published by two economists, Reinhart & Rogoff. In the meantime this article has been debunked as being scientific crap [see Krugman]. Very few economists agree with the ideas. Nearly no economists think that Austerity is the answer to the crisis. In the meantime – you cannot stop a running train – austerity will continue. Austerity is ruinous for our society, as will be shown here. It is unnecessary and ruinous. 2 Economy pseudo science The article that proved that a 90% debt is fatal is wrong for three reasons: 1. They inverted cause-and effect. While (marginally) proving that ”slow economic growth” and ”a debt of more than 90%” are related, the cause and effect were inverted. In fact, a debt of more than 90% is caused by a slow growth and not the other way around.
