  • THE NATURE and POWER of SATAN Theorizing About the Nature
CHAPTER THREE THE NATURE AND POWER OF SATAN Theorizing about the nature, origin, and cosmological status of Satan occurs among the selected writings, especially among the later ones. However, there is an obvious lack of "speculative" interest in the sense of seeking to work out a complete cosmology of evil. Concepts as to the origin, abode, and ultimate future of Satan are often very diverse, and there are only a small number of referen ces. An analysis and interpretation of the nature of Satan as conceiv ed by the early Christian tradition will be therefore necessarily less comprehensive than a discussion of his activities. There are some basic understandings as to the nature and power of Satan common to most of the selected writers, however, and they are best summarized by the New Testament phrases: Satan, the "prince of the power of the air," "ruler of demons," "ruler of the world," and "god of this age." A. SATAN: PRINCE OF THE POWER OF THE AIR 1. Origin of Satan For the most part, the New Testament writers make no theoreti cal assertions as to the origin of Satan. However, a number of passages by choice of words and phraseology seem to reflect the idea of Satan as a fallen angel who is chief among a class of fallen angels, an idea which appears frequently in apocalyptic literature.1 II Peter 2 :4, for example, refers to the angels that sinned and were cast into hell. Jude 6 mentions "the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling ..

In the Book of the Watchers,anEnochic apocalypse from the third century bce,the“sonsofGod”ofGen6:1 –4 are accused of corrupting humankind through their teachings of metalworking, cos- metology, magic, and divination. By tracing the transformations of this motif in Second Temple, Rabbinic, and early medieval Judaism and early, late antique, and Byzantine Christianity, this book sheds light on the history of interpretation of Genesis, the changing status of Enochic literature, and the place of parabibli- cal texts and traditions in the interchange between Jews and Christians in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. In the process, it explores issues such as the role of text-selection in the delineation of community boundaries and the development of early Jewish and Christian ideas about the origins of evil on the earth. • Dark Mirrors: Azazel and Satanael in Early Jewish Demonology
Orlov Dark Mirrors RELIGIOUS STUDIES Azazel and Satanael in Early Jewish Demonology Dark Mirrors is a wide-ranging study of two central figures in early Jewish demonology—the fallen angels Azazel and Satanael. Andrei A. Orlov explores the mediating role of these paradigmatic celestial rebels in the development of Jewish demonological traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to later Jewish mysticism, such as that of the Hekhalot and Shi ur Qomah materials. Throughout, Orlov makes use of Jewish pseudepigraphical materials in Slavonic that are not widely known. Dark Mirrors Orlov traces the origins of Azazel and Satanael to different and competing mythologies of evil, one to the Fall in the Garden of Eden, the other to the revolt of angels in the antediluvian period. Although Azazel and Satanael are initially representatives of rival etiologies of corruption, in later Jewish and Christian demonological lore each is able to enter the other’s stories in new conceptual capacities. Dark Mirrors also examines the symmetrical patterns of early Jewish demonology that are often manifested in these fallen angels’ imitation of the attributes of various heavenly beings, including principal angels and even God himself. Andrei A. Orlov is Associate Professor of Theology at Marquette University. He is the author of several books, including Selected Studies in the Slavonic Pseudepigrapha. • The Dominion of the Antichrist Revelation 9
The Dominion of the Antichrist Revelation 9: 1-12 Satan is determined to destroy this planet! The Bible describes Satan as the “father of lies” (John 8:44). He is the ultimate deceiver. His name means, “accuser,” and he is depicted as the accuser of God and His people. (Rev.12:10) He is opposed to God and seeks to alienate men from truth! He misled the fallen angels (Rev.12:4) and he tempts men and women to sin against God’s laws. He inspires the very spirit of Antichrist! (1John 2:18-23). The term angel (angelos) means messenger. God’s angels are divine messengers. (Hebrews 1:14). By contrast, Satan is pictured in scripture as a fallen angel, the leader of a band of other fallen angels, who deceive the whole world. (Rev. 12:9) He is ultimate power behind the Antichrist and the False Prophet (Rev. 13:4). Satan’s oldest trick is self-deception. When he tempted Eve in the garden, he appealed to her selfish desire to be like God. This was the same desire that led to his fall in the first place Satan was once called Lucifer, “son of the dawn” (Isaiah 14:12), but he was cast from his lofty position in heaven, along with the angelic host that rebelled with him. The bible calls this rebellion the “mystery of lawlessness” (2 Thes. 2:7). Satan and his angels willfully and deliberately sinned against God. Jude 6 says they “did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper abode.” 2 Peter 2:4 “For God did not spare even the angels who sinned.

  • Glossary Catechism of the Catholic Church
Glossary from the Catechism of the Catholic Church Even before the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a Glossary had been proposed to provide assistance to those who would use the new Catechism. This Glossary has been prepared by Archbishop William J. Levada, who served as a member of the Editorial Committee of the Special Commission of the Holy See for the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It has been reviewed by the NCCB ad hoc Committee to Oversee the Use of the Catechism, as well as by the chairman and staff of the NCCB Committee on Doctrine. This Glossary has been composed with reference to the language of the Catechism itself: the numbers in parentheses refer to the number(s) in the Catechism where the term or concept is explained. The criterion for the selection of words included in this Glossary is twofold: (1) unfamiliar or technical terms are defined, in order to assist readers who are not acquainted with them through formal religious or theological studies; and (2) multiple meanings or uses of familiar terms are presented, thus alerting readers to the various uses of the term in Church doctrine. Common words and most proper names are not listed in this Glossary, nor are religious terms which are not directly or indirectly present in the Catechism. It is important to remember that this Glossary, like the Catechism's Indexes, is an additional instrument by which readers may find assistance in their use of the Catechism itself. While the Glossary is faithful to the language of the Catechism, it does not participate in the approval of the text of the Catechism given in the Apostolic Constitution Fidei depositum of Pope John Paul II.

  • The Curses of Azazel
The Curses of Azazel . Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, in this fashion: his right hand upon his left. He shall confess over it all the iniquities of the children of Israel and all their rebellions, whatever their sins; he shall put them on the head of the goat with a declared and explicit oath by the great and glorious Name. —Targum Pseudo-Jonathan to Leviticus 16:21 Introduction The second part of the Apocalypse of Abraham, a Jewish pseudepigra- phon written in early centuries of the Common Era,1 deals with the ascent of the eponymous hero to the heavenly Holy of Holies. On this celestial journey, Abraham and his angelic companion Yahoel encoun- ter a strange demonic creature, namely, the fallen angel Azazel, who attempts to interfere, warning the patriarch about the grave dangers that a mortal might encounter upon ascending to the abode of the Deity. In response to Azazel’s challenge, Yahoel rebukes and curses the fallen angel. The curses imposed on the fallen angel are often seen as having cultic significance.2 In the sacerdotal framework of the Slavonic apocalypse, which is permeated with the dynamics of the Yom Kippur ritual,3 the cursing formulae delivered by the angel Yahoel, whom the text depicts as the celestial cultic servant,4 appear reminiscent of those curses bestowed on the scapegoat by the high priest on the Day of Atonement.5 Thus some have argued that the fallen angel bearing the conspicuous name Azazel6 is depicted here as the celestial scapegoat predestined to take upon itself the sins and transgressions of Abraham in order to carry them into the realm of his exile.
