Pakistan claimed the honours in the dress rehearsal for the final with a memo- rable victory over the world champions in a dramatic day/night encounter at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The game lived up to its billing right from the onset as Saeed Anwar and Saleem Elahi tore into the Australia attack. Elahi was in particularly impressive form, blast- ing 79 from 91 balls as Pakistan plundered 290 from their 50 overs. But, never wanting to be outdone, the Australians responded in fine style with Adam Gilchrist attacking the Pakistan bowling with equal relish. The wicketkeep- er sensationally raced to his 20th one-day international half-century in just 29 balls on his way to a quick-fire 70. Once Saqlain Mushtaq had ended his 44-ball knock however, skipper Waqar Younis stepped up to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The pace star is bowling as well as he has done in years as his side come to the end of their tour of England and his figures of six for 59 fully deserved the man of the match award and to take his side to victory. -

Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B
Sri Lankan Journal of Applied Statistics, Vol (14-1) Performance Analysis of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 Ananda B. W. Manage*, Stephen M. Scariano and Cecil R. Hallum Sam Houston State University Huntsville, Texas, USA 77341 Corresponding Author (Email: [email protected]) Received: 13 February 2013 / Revised: 15 May 2013 ABSTRACT Performance analysis of cricket players is always an intricate task due to the correlated nature of the variables used to quantify contributions to the team. Lack of transparency of current methods, probably due to commercial confidentiality, creates a necessity for new and lucent evaluative methods. Here, we present a simple, yet straightforward, method for analyzing the performance of T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 players that can be easily adapted to other team sports. Keywords: Cricket, Principal Component Analysis, Ranking Methods. 1. Introduction Quantifying individual player contributions to a team is an important yet difficult task in all team sports. Usually, there are several indicators available to measure player performances, which are based on different aspects of their contributions to the team. Unfortunately these indicators are mostly related to each other in a manner that oftentimes causes difficulty in constructing an overall performance measure. Our idea is to use a tool acquired from multivariate statistical analysis and apply it directly to T20-World Cup Cricket 2012 data. In this method, the first principal component is used to rank batsmen and bowlers. The technique is simple and can be directly applied to the type of correlated data routinely found in team sports such as cricket. Cricket administrators and sports analysts can use this amenable method to quantify players’ contribution, which could lead to a ranking structure based on their performances. -

The Royal Thomian Derby (Or the Royal Thomian Match) by Renu Manamendra (Life Member - Royal College Union and the Group of '76) Reproduced from the Daily News The most looked forward to sporting and social event in the Calendar of present and past students of the two most renowned high schools in Sri Lanka, the Royal versus S. Thomas' Cricket Match, is played over 3 days in the month of March in the city of Colombo. S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, a private Anglican school has about 2,500 boys on roll, while Royal college Colombo, a government-run non-denominational school accommodates approximately 8,000, making it the largest school in the country. Origins of School Cricket in Ceylon The early origins of S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia date ba ck to 1851 when it was located in Mutwal, Colombo. It is the first Ceylonese school to play cricket - beginning 1864 against the Small Pass Cricket Club in Colombo. This is also the first recorded instance of a cricket match between two Ceylonese teams pla yed in Ceylon. S. Thomas' was represented in this historic match by G. A. Edward, W. De. Livera, K. Banda, S. H. Pereira, L. Sepion, B. A. Senanayake, C. de Silva, L. T. Nolan, E. de Hoedt, H. M. Fernando and A. Perera. As there was no other school playin g cricket at the time, from 1864 to 1877, S. Thomas' played against the clubs and other teams that were in existence in Colombo, Negombo and Kalutara, including the elitist European dominated Colombo Cricket Club.
