The Essential Oil Components of Five Micromeria Species Grown in Anatolia
BAÜ Fen Bil. Enst. Dergisi Cilt 15(2) 73-79 (2013) The Essential Oil Components of five Micromeria Species grown in Anatolia Sema ÇARIKÇI* Balikesir University, Faculty of Arts and Science, Department of Chemistry, Balikesir Abstract In this study, the essential oil of five Micromeria species, six plant samples grown in Anatolia; M. juliana, two different locality of M. myrtifolia, M. cristata subsp. cristata, M. cristata subsp. phyrigia and M. cristata subsp. orientalis were evaluated. The oils obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS. Totally forty-seven compounds were detected in the oil of studied Micromeria species representing 91.2- 98.5%. β- Caryophyllene (1.4- 58.8%), Caryophyllene oxide (6.4- 33.9%) were found all studied species in high ratio. While two compounds were identified as the main components of the essential oils of M. juliana, two different locality of M. myrtifolia, Borneol (23.2- 35.3%) was main components of the essential oils of M. cristata subsp. cristata, M. cristata subsp. phyrigia and M. cristata subsp. orientalis. Keywords: Essential oil, Micromeria, β-Caryophyllene, Caryophyllene oxide, Borneol. -

It is represented by 48 genera and 782 taxa (603 species, 179 subspecies and varieties) in the country, 346 taxa ( 271 species, 75 subspecies and varieties) of which are endemic. Endemism ratio is ca. % 44. The largest genera in the country based on the taxon number are Stachys L.(118 taxa), Salvia L.(107 taxa), Sideritis L.(54 taxa), Phlomis L.(53 taxa), Teucrium L. (49 taxa), Thymus L.(47 taxa). Endangered genera according to IUCN criteria; Salvia L.(43 taxa), Stachys L.( 19 taxa) Thymus L. (16 taxa), Sideritis L.(14 taxa), Teucrium L. 14)1 :(67-59) 1392( a Survey of Lamiaceae in the Flora of Iran
Z. Jamzad / A survey of Lamiaceae in the flora of Iran …/ Rostaniha 14(1), 201359 رﺳﺘﻨﻴﻬﺎ Rostaniha 14(1): 59-67 (2013) (1392 ) 59-67 :( 14)1 A survey of Lamiaceae in the flora of Iran Received: 27.02.2013 / Accepted: 29.05.2013 Z. Jamzad: Research Prof., Research Institute of Forests and Rangelands, P.O. Box 13185-116, Tehran, Iran ([email protected] & [email protected]) Abstract In Iran, the Lamiaceae family is represented by 46 genera, 406 species and 97 infraspecific taxa; of these, 165 taxa are endemic. The distribution of family in Iran covers the whole country but the species number decreases from the centre towards the east, south-east and south. The distribution pattern of endemic taxa shows that Chaharmahal-va- Bakhtiari, Esfahan, Fars, Tehran, Azarbayejan, Kohgiloueh-va-Boirahamad, Lurestan and Hamadan provinces are the hot spots for speciation of the family and in these provinces most of the endemic taxa occur. From the conservation point of view, 14 species are suspected of being extinct, or very rare and 55 taxa rare and endangered and are in a critical condition because of their narrow distribution. These taxa have been recorded only from one location in Iran and need special attention and must be considered in conservation programs. Nonetheless, there are a few species with very wide distributions and high frequency. Some of these species occur in ruderal or disturbed habitats. Keywords: Distribution pattern, endemics, flora of Iran, Labiatae Introduction Lamiaceae ( Labiatae ) is a family in the Lamiales order. It has important medicinal and aromatic plants, very important in the honey and cosmetic industry. -

GENUS MICROMERIA: A REVIEW ARTICLE Abstract Micromeria (Family Lamiaceae) is widespread across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America, with a center of diversity in the Mediterranean region and the Canary Islands. More than 78 species of Micromeria have been known, famous examples is: M. fruticose.Genus Micromeria comprises plants of different chemical nature. Based on previous studies, Micromeria species is considered as a rich source of essential oils, mainly; monoterpene hydrocarbons, oxygenated monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes hydrocarbons, and oxygenated sesquiterpenes. About ten species of Micromeria have been identified ot grow widely in Lebanon, of which Micromeria fruticosa is the most common and abundant. -
