Bartholomew DOI: 10.7252/Paper. 0000 44 | The LDS Church and Public Engagement: Te history of the public engagement of Te Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also known as the “Mormons”) is a study of their political, social, and theological shift from polemics, with the associated religious persecution and marginalization, to adjustments and accommodations that have rendered periods of dramatically favorable results. In two generations Mormonism went from being the “ultimate outcast”—its members being literally driven from the borders of the U.S. and persecuted abroad—to becoming the “embodiment of the mainstream” with members fguring prominently in government and business circles nationally and internationally; what one noted journalist has deemed “a breathtaking transformation.”1 I will argue that necessary accommodations made in Church orthodoxy and orthopraxy were not only behind the political, social, and theological “mainstream,” but also consistently outlasted their “acceptability,” as the rapidly changing world’s values outpaced these changes in Mormonism. 1830-1889: MARGINALIZATION Te frst known public engagement regarding Mormonism was when the young Joseph Smith related details regarding what has become known as his 1820 “First Vision” of the Father and the Son. He would later report that “my telling the story had excited a great deal of prejudice against me among professors of religion, and was the cause of great persecution.”2 It may seem strange that Joseph Smith should be so criticized when, in the intense revivalistic atmosphere of the time, many people claimed to have received personal spiritual manifestations, including visions.

Hinckley summarized the influence the Scott C. That is hardly original in itself. The scene would thus be unworthy of note if it were not for further specifics. April 6th, 1917, was the day on which the United States declared war on Germany and entered the conflict now known as World War I. The prayer was offered in the US Senate in response to that decision. But just as significant as the setting is the praying subject. Smoot was a Senator from Utah, a Republican, and an Apostle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS), that is a Mormon. To which the average reader likely responds, “of course.” If Smoot was from Utah, he was of course Mormon, of course Republican, and of course willing to perform religiosity in public. This essay does not aim to cut through that chain of assumptions. Rather, my discussion offers an account of how these links have been forged: a development that would have surprised the majority of nineteenth-century Mormons as much as their non-Mormon contemporaries. What could be conservative about open scriptural canon, communitarian utopianism, and non-monogamous marriage? Ultimately, however, Mormon conservatism is grounded in particulars of that theology. It has further been shaped, gradually but thereby durably, through shifting principles of LDS political engagement. Consideration of this process offers a case study in how an initially radical formation can fashion itself into conservatism.

    June 2021 The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square Application Guide SERVICE AS A MUSICAL MISSIONARY Members of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square are set apart as musical missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This special privilege of singing in the Choir requires the enthusiasm of a volunteer and the discipline and responsibility of a professional. Although it is an all-volunteer ensemble, the Choir performs on a regular basis in the professional arenas of broadcasting, recording, and concertizing. It is also heard by a worldwide audience that has come to expect a consistently excellent performance. To perform at such a high level with a limited amount of rehearsal time requires intense effort. Consequently, each member of the Choir is asked to commit a significant amount of time to Choir membership. This will be your principal Church calling and will often take you away from your family and home ward. The decision to apply for membership in the Choir should be a thoughtful and prayerful one. It is essential that you have the cooperation and support of family members regarding this decision. Be sure to consider this critical aspect of Choir service before you begin the audition process.
