  • The Pandas Are Coming, the Pandas Are Coming!!! by DRAS Member Derek P.S
WTFish?: The Pandas Are Coming, The Pandas Are Coming!!! by DRAS Member Derek P.S. Tustin ometimes it is interesting living in the Greater Toronto Area, isn’t it? S Recently deemed to be the fourth largest city in North America (leaping past Chicago by 84,000 people) behind Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles, we truly are a world class city. (Interestingly enough, the Greater Toronto Area, that being the recognized metropolitan area of the city and those living in the immediate suburbs, is actually the 51st largest metropolitan area in the world with 6,139,000 people. Tokyo is first with 37,126,000 and Chicago is 28th, with 9,121,000(1). So we still have some catching up to do...) And since I seem to be heading off on tangents today, have you ever considered what makes a city “world class”? According to some, it is a “city generally considered to be an important node in the global economic system.”(2) Given Toronto’s impact on the national economy, and the subsequent influence within the international economic community, it can easily be argued that Toronto is such a city. But there are also cultural factors that come into play. Toronto is blessed with many such attractions, but the one that stands out in my mind is the Toronto Zoo. Sometimes I think we all take for granted what a wonderful facility we have right next door. The Toronto Zoo is consistently ranked as one of the top ten zoos in the world (3, 4, 5), and acknowledged as being one of the largest zoos in the world (6).

  • Notes on Fishes of the Genus Brachygobius
LIBRARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN 590.5 FI V.39 cop. 3 NATURAL HISTORY, SURVEY •- -f 9 14 FIELDIANA • ZOOLOGY '^ P- Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Volume 39 April 25, 1968 No. 14 NOTES ON FISHES OF THE GENUS BRACHYGOBIUS Robert F. Inger ^ Curator, Division op Rbptilbb and Amphibians The gobies of the genus Brachygobius Bleeker inhabit both brack- ish and fresh waters of the Oriental region. All the species are small (rarely over 30 mm.) and banded with black and yellow. Material recently acquired by Chicago Natural History Museum from North Borneo contained fishes apparently belonging to a new form. This discovery led to a study of previously described species with the result that B. aggregatus Herre was found to be a composite species in- cluding a new one from Borneo. These two forms are described in this paper. The generic diagnosis of Brachygobius given by Koumans (1953) contains several statements requiring modification. According to Koumans, predorsal and opercular scales are always present and the anal and second dorsal fins have from seven to ten branched rays. Actually, not all species have opercular scales. In some species pre- dorsal scales may be present or absent, depending on size; in others the predorsals seem to occur on all individuals; in still others they are always absent. The anal and second dorsal usually have seven or eight branched rays, but in two species six is the common number. In general, Brachygobius has a short heavy body, cylindrical ante- riorly, compressed posteriorly. The head is flattened between the eyes, which are always larger than both the snout and the inter- orbital.

The list includes some doubtful records from the literature and gives correct identifications of misidentified Singapore species wherever possible. A total of 149 gobioid species are now known from Singapore, including several of dubious identity. Of these, 37 have not been recently reported nor found in recent collections from the island, possibly due to habitat changes. Nine species of gobioid fishes are recorded from Singapore for the first time. KEY WORDS. – Singapore, Gobioidei, Gobiidae, Eleotridae, Microdesmidae, checklist. INTRODUCTION high wave energies, enabling mangroves to develop and flourish, especially along the northern coast. The southern Singapore is an island state situated at the southern tip of the shores and islands of Singapore generally receive higher Malay Peninsula, between the Straits of Malacca and the wave energy, resulting in a patchy distribution of mangroves. Parenti Abstract. Extensive collections of freshwater and coastal fi shes from throughout northwestern Borneo reveal a distinct phallostethid biota. Seven of the 23 species in the phallostethid subfamily Phallostethinae, known commonly as priapiumfi shes, live in northwestern Borneo and of those, three are endemics, including the new species described herein. Neostethus geminus, new species, is most closely related to N. bicornis Regan, 1916 with which it shares two, elongate curved ctenactinia (vs. one elongate and one short ctenactinium as in other Neostethus) in mature males, a brown blotch on the pelvic-fi n rays of the proctal side of immature males, and a fl eshy, hoodlike fold in females that includes the anus and genital and urinary pores. Neostethus geminus differs from N. bicornis in being smaller (adults reach no more than 25.7 mm SL vs. 31 mm SL), and in having males with a relatively compact priapium with a foreshortened, broad aproctal axial bone that meets but does not overlap the pulvinular appendage (vs. a relatively elongate priapium with a long and narrow aproctal axial bone that overlaps the pulvinular appendage medially) and thin, nearly translucent, broad papillary bone expanded distally into a tab (vs. having a short papillary bone). Females have a thickened fl eshy, hoodlike fold that includes the anus, genital pore and urinary pore (vs.

Fishes of inland waters of the Phu Quoc Island, Gulf of Thailand, Vietnam: ichthyofauna structure and some remarks on the major evolutionary trends in its genesis. Acta Ichthyol. Piscat. 42 (3): 193–214. Background. The ichthyofauna of the Phu Quoc Island (Vietnam), situated in the Gulf of Thailand in the prox- imity of the coastline of Cambodia, has not been sufficiently studied. The isolation of the island combined with the knowledge on its geologica l history could yield conclusions on the evolutionary trends and speculations on how individual faunistic groups were formed. The aims of this study were to investigate the recent ichthyofauna of the Phu Quoc Island and to analyze the major evolutionary trends in its history by a comparison with recent faunas of the neighbouring mainland. Materials and methods. A total of about 4000 fishes representing 97 different teleostean species were collect- ed at 46 sampled sites in the Phu Quoc Island from 6 December 2011 to 12 January 2012 by using different kinds of sampling equipment and collection methods as well as through exploring different habitats.

An Analysis of the United States of America International Trade in Ornamental Fish PROJECT FlNAL REPORT University of Florida Submitted to University of Hawaii Prepared by Frank A. Adams2 and Michel Andre2 ‘Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences ‘Food and Resource Economics Department University of Florida Phone: (904) 392-9617 FaxPhone: (904) 392-3462 AUGUST 1994 AN ANALYSIS OF THE UNITEDSTATES OF AMERICA INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN ORNAMENTAL FISH Frank A. Chapman, Sharon Fitz-Coy, Eric Thunberg, Jeffrey T. Rodrick, Charles M. Adams and Michel Andre SYNOPSIS Households in the United States of America, Canada, Europe, and Japan are the principal keepers of ornamental fish in the world. Trade figures on the U.S.A. ornamental fish imports and exports indicates that this industry is consistently expanding. As import and export numbers and value of ornamental fish increase, the net trade deficit also continues to rise. Recently released figures, indicate imports of ornamental fish into the U.S. totalled $45.2 million in 1993, a 10% increase from 1992. Exports of ornamental fish totalled $17.3 million (5% higher than the previous year) for a net trade deficit of $27.9 million.
