my side of the family hates charades.

My husband’s side loves it. Out of my three children, the youngest got the charades gene. Recently we had the whole family over for dinner and, as usual, the kids inhaled their meals so they could do what they do best: try to ruin our dinner by running around the dinner table, crawling underneath it, climbing on laps, screaming and (naturally) fighting. As this unfolded, I noticed the youngest sitting quietly (on her grandmother’s lap) writing on small pieces of paper and folding them up. I asked what she was doing and she answered with the dreaded response, “I’m making a charades game for us to play.”

The Ripley side was all in; the Valletta side fell silent. I mean, how do you tell your cute little munchkin that you would rather endure bamboo torture than play her game? So we just sat there and finished our dinner. Luckily, I had made dessert that night, so the meal went on, and on, and on, and everyone forgot about playing the game.

The next morning, I found a red binder on the dining room table with a title page, “Sherads,” followed by little scraps of paper with words like: napkin, horse or chicken, “capps – the kind of hat,” gramma and “techer.” My heart sank, thinking of her sitting over there, quietly creating a game for the family while we just chatted it up with each other and lollygagged over our lemon pound cake.

I approached my child about the red binder, apologized for not playing and complimented her on all of her hard work. We flipped through all of the clues she had created and talked about how we would have acted them out. After a long hug, I told her we would play on Thanksgiving when the whole family would be here again. She smiled and said, “Well then I’ll have to make all new clues because you know these already and if you have time to practice, then you won’t look silly and embarrassed.” Ah ha!

And the truth comes out: Maybe she really does love the game, but it appears that her real objective is to get all the adults to look like idiots. Well, due to my poor judgment in parenting at that recent family dinner (and overwhelming mommy guilt) it looks like I’m going for the silly and embarrassed look on Thanksgiving. And you know what, I may just love it, because she loves it – and I love her.

Post script… Thanksgiving “sherads” happened the Saturday before we went to print with this issue. I played. I got “Eating pop rocks.” I looked like an idiot and I loved it. At least I didn’t pull “donkey”. mp

10 NOVEMBER 2015 | mtparent.com Q afraid to say it. Possibly I was experiencing “Spiritual Holiday Anxiety-Induced Dyslexia.” Whatever caused my misspeaking, I couldn’t take it back. The word was out, and the response was LADIES NIGHT immediate and loud. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19 5PM - 8PM What ensued was one of those moments that is forever seared on a young girl’s psyche. Snorting Good Earth tea out of her nose, my Aunt Carrie (not a real Aunt, but a “spiritual community” Aunt) fell off her bench and rolled around on the floor, laughing and gasping for breath. My brother pointed and laughed and shook his head, as though I had finally and totally confirmed that I was a subpar misfit who didn’t actually belong. My little sister didn’t understand what I’d said, but my mom sure did. She looked at me with wry disappointment. She may have patted me on the back.

It was right around that time I began to give up trying to please the people in this spiritual community. This moment, looking back, may have been the birthplace of my exuberant and mon-sat 10am-7pm | sun 10am-5pm extended rebelliousness. I credit my rebellious 7 west main street | bozeman streak for keeping me sane during the years of my www.heydaybozeman.com parents’ deep commitment to a misguided and over-controlling group of spiritual know-it-alls. Years after my folks dropped out of the group, my mom said to me “When you were in your rebellious stage, I actually gave up on you, and focused on your brother and sister.”

This sentence haunts me. I can’t figure out how to be with it. Sometimes I feel grateful, because if my mom had focused on me, I may have felt compelled to try to please her for a few more years. Yet I can’t help but wonder: If she had focused on me (and not on how she wanted me to be), how would things have unfolded differently?

There is no sense in trying to re-hash the past, trying to figure out what could have, would have, should have been. In sharing my story, however, I hope to dilute the shaming power of this moment, and let it drift into the ethers as another funny story about how growing up and finding our way is a winding path of fits and starts, misspoken words and trying-too-hard patterns of behavior for a few crumbs of parental approval.

I don’t think the Bible has the word “genital” in it. I’ve looked. When in doubt, though, always say “Gentile.” mp

ISO is your camera’s level of sensitivity to the available surrounding light. Without getting too in depth here, the Pro Secrets for the Best Holiday Pictures lower the ISO the more available light you have (extremely bright sunny day with no clouds), the higher the ISO the less light you have (inside with very minimal light). Be aware that the higher the ISO you are using, the more grain or noise your image will incur.

Christmas Morning So now that you’re ready to take some photographs, have your children face the window when opening gifts to light up their face ARTICLE AND PHOTOS BY MARIAH ALLEN and give you more light to work with. If you can’t face them toward Memories the window, then at least have them sit parallel to a window, not You stayed up way too late wrapping those last few gifts, assembling the breakfast with their back to the window. I absolutely love making indoor casserole and, oh yes, the cookies and milk for Santa. You know what morning I classic natural light photos black and white. But if you own a DSLR and want to know how to create those beautiful Christmas morning memories, then now is the time to get out your camera. Learn how to take great photos in low-light settings, don’t wait until your kids are running down the stairs and you’re half awake to figure out your camera settings. Here are some quick tips on photographing inside.

Staging the scene The first step is to place your Christmas tree close to a large window. This ensures that plenty of light will filter in where all the holiday fun will be happening. The next step is opening all your shades before everyone arises to make sure the area you will be photographing is flooded with plenty of light. Shut off the overhead lights. You 4 might think having lights on will help, but having one light source (natural light) is 3 best for those classic images.

Camera preparation The night before, make sure you charge your batteries and have blank memory cards ready to go. There is nothing worse than going to take pictures and finding your battery is dead, your charger is missing and you’ve forgotten to download images from the last family outing. It will be too late when the kids are ready to open those gifts. Make Christmas morning less stressful by checking this off the night before. Or better yet, buy yourself an extra battery and a large memory card and wrap it up for yourself to open on Christmas Eve (buy it now to have on hand). 5 Camera Settings The last thing to consider is setting your DSLR on a tripod and You may be nervous about taking your camera off auto or “P” mode, but if you putting it on self-timer mode (#6), so you can be in some of the start practicing now, you will feel more confident by Christmas morning. Aperture priority takes to get out from behind the camera so my kids have me in their the guesswork out of what shutter speed you should be using to get that perfect photographs as well. Don’t worry if you didn’t have time to get exposure triangle (we will talk about ISO next). Example: Image one has a smaller aperture f /4 bringing more detail into focus. Image two has a larger aperture f /2 blurring the sign and bringing the child into focus.

This article is about turning greed (“I want, I need, we should have…”) into gratitude (“thank you.”)

The desire for “things” leads children to lose sight of how much they already possess. We know we live in a very materialistic world and advertisements constantly bombard our children with messages telling them they are less adequate without certain things. It is our job as parents to help our children differentiate between wants and needs. Children are naturally impulsive, self-centered and lacking in judgment. As parents, we must teach them to control their impulses, gain judgment and be less self-absorbed.

Being charitable is another critical activity to assist kids in being less self- absorbed and more focused on other people. »»Obviously the holiday season is an opportunity to help your child prioritize their wants and help them think of other’s wants and needs. Be Present, Go to Bed and Schedule a Lazy Day Tips to Ease Holiday Stress WRITTEN BY MYRA NORMAN HARTZHEIM

As a sleep coach, I’ve learned that reducing stress is half the battle to empowering kids to get the sleep they need. And stress is often the reason adults have trouble sleeping, too. Sources of stress are different for adults than children, but you’d be surprised how often resolving that stress can have the same solution for both kids and parents. During my practice, I’ve learned some tips that can reduce the stress of the holidays. It’s my pleasure to share three of them with you here.

Drop what you’re doing and take a moment to be present. When your children are hurt, sad or tired and they come running to you to hold them, just the simple act of being held and receiving the positive affirmation they seek releases a calming hormone in their body that reduces the stress they are experiencing. In our culture of independence and isolation, we often overlook the benefits of a simple hug, a positive word of encouragement and quality time spent with loved ones as a source of relaxation. I challenge you to take a moment and appreciate the people around you, especially during your busiest times. As you drive to that next store to grab that one thing, reach back and grab your child’s hand and tell him you love him. As you are walking that washed load of laundry to be sorted, notice the little person following you, stoop down, look her in the eyes and give her a hug. Embrace your spouse and give him/her a kiss as he/she returns from work – make it a habit. These moments really are medicine for the body.

Go to bed on time. This goes for you as well as your kids. I know how tempting it is to stay up late wrapping gifts, prepping the meal for the next day, cleaning your house – or, let’s be honest, checking Facebook – but did you know that if you stay up late, your body naturally gives you an extra dose of stress hormones to keep you awake? Yup, its true. Cortisol is what keeps you awake and doesn’t let your mind shut down when you’ve finally gone to bed. Adults have natural sleep windows just like children: a child’s bedtime sleep window is typically around 7-7:30 p.m. while an adult’s natural sleep window is around 10-10:30 p.m. So do yourself and your family a huge favor and go to bed when you feel the sleepiness setting in. www.heartsanddreams.net follow us on Facebook: Schedule in those lazy days, you’ll need it. After a big party and/or long string of events, you will need a recovery day. Plan your recovery days ahead of time and facebook.com/heartsanddreamsmt protect them. If your kids were out late with you, plan on them possibly needing an extra nap (you just might need a nap, too). Chalet MarketWRITTEN BY ELEONORE SNOW

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” quite like meat does – particularly when it’s specialty meat from the Chalet Market in Belgrade. Tasty goodies like Elk Summer Sausage, Buffalo Jerky and Smoked Beef Stix can all be sent to friends and family in a beautifully packaged gift box, along with other treats like Chalet’s insanely addictive honey mustard, cheeses, huckleberry jams, chocolates and everyone’s favorite Bequet caramels. They ship to all 50 states and APO addresses.

“These boxes are a great gift for those people who have everything,” says Chalet owner Gwen Crogan. “They’re like a taste of Montana.”

Chalet Market has been serving up authentic and delicious jerky, bratwurst, summer sausage, ham and meat sticks in this valley since 1976. They are the only USDA meat plant in the area, which allows them to send their products all over the country, including Yellowstone, where their goodies are sold in the park’s shops. They also serve daily soup and lunch specials and their bratwursts and ham (which you can buy sliced by the pound) are absolutely to die for.

Visit Chalet Market in Belgrade at 6410 Jackrabbit Lane or one of their holiday gift stores in the Gallatin Valley Mall or the Great Falls Holiday Village Mall - between mid-November and the end of the year. mp

Like most working single moms, Eleonore Snow runs full speed at all times and sometimes goes to the store to buy milk for her kids and comes home with only wine for herself. You can judge her, it’s OK.

THANKFUL GIVING FLICKS WRITTEN BY SIERRA FEIN only

‘Tis the season of giving, love and family – a time to reflect on all that you are grateful for in life. This Thanksgiving season, cherish those that surround you with love and laughter. Speak from your heart, commit random acts of kindness and watch these inspiring films that blend warmth, humor and authentic human emotions.

The Ultimate Gift (2007) PG After the passing of his grandfather, Jason (Drew Fuller), a spoiled and self- absorbed young adult is challenged to complete several tasks that lead up to the “ultimate gift.” His grandfather (James Garner), bestowing wisdom beyond the grave, created an elaborate video that leads Jason on a journey of self-discovery before he can receive his inheritance. After receiving the initial instructions for the quest of an ambiguous “ultimate gift,” Jason reluctantly boards a plane to Texas for his first task. As he completes task after task, he slowly discovers the intangible “gifts” that his grandfather intended. Jason finally realizes that his elite financial status creators leads to artificial happiness. With the unexpected insight of his two new friends, the adorable from the Emily (Abigail Breslin) and her mom, Alexia (Ali Hills), Jason learns about love, integrity and the of the nova café power of a true human connection. Both heartbreaking and heartwarming, The Ultimate Gift is a film of personal growth and renewed hope.

Pieces of April (2003) PG-13 Pieces of April authentically captures a story within a single day focused around Thanksgiving. Avoiding the use the flashbacks, the narrative slowly releases pieces of the backstory through the perspectives of each family member. The stylistic cinematography delivers a home-movie sentiment that allows the audience to share in the chaos of April’s (Katie Holmes) attempt at cooking an entire Thanksgiving dinner for her estranged family with the added challenge of a broken oven. Judgment and previous misconceptions surface within her nuclear family as they journey to April’s new apartment on Thanksgiving Day. Meanwhile, the distraught April collects a colorful cast of accomplices within her sketchy apartment complex to assist in cooking her Thanksgiving turkey. Pieces of April exhibits a genuine portrayal of dysfunctional families with compassion and conviction to celebrate coming together despite all opposing odds. mp

WRITTEN BY ELEANOR BARKER We make home cooked meals for your busy family! It’s always mealtime at my house. Three meals a day, seven days a week; all year long I’m slinging hash for a family that includes two voracious teenagers – so that should give you some idea of the quantities involved. And, of course, it all ramps up during the holidays, when we’re joined by friends, family, passers-by and hangers-on, in what feels like an endless ritual of planning, shopping, preparing and cleaning up.

I love to cook (mainly because I love to eat) and though I’ve been known to complain about the drudgery involved, my irritation melts away when it’s time to sit down at the table. November delivery Those 25 minutes when we’re all together is a highlight for trips to Bozeman me – sharing news, stories and a delicious meal in a rainbow Wednesday of colors and flavors. But make no mistake about it: my kids November 11th at 5:30 are just as picky as yours about what they eat, and always have been. And though they’ve grown more adventurous Wednesday 25th 3:30 with each passing year, they’re not likely to be filling their November at plates with Indian vindaloo any time soon. When “the pickies” first appeared, we turned to one of our dog-eared Mayo Clinic parenting books for guidance, and have been relying on that advice ever since. EXPERIENTIAL, CURRICULUM BASED, & FAMILY CENTERED »»Don’t force it. Demanding that kids eat things they don’t like, eat everything on their plate or eat specific foods in order to “earn” dessert can land you in a power struggle resulting in a mealtime fraught with anxiety and frustration. (And, as my mother always says, if you’re engaged in a power struggle with your child, you’ve already lost.)

»»Be patient. Kids often need repeated exposure to new foods before daring to take a bite, so go slow. Serve new tastes and textures alongside familiar favorites, and stick to small portions. Try to assess your child’s intake of fruits and vegetables over the course of several days, rather than obsessing about consumption at each and every meal.

»»Focus on the family. Turn off the television, put down the phone and pay attention to each other during mealtimes. Choose a conversation prompt, play a simple word game or go around the table and encourage everyone to share the day’s highlights and lowlights. Light some candles to make it even more special. Making meals about togetherness rather than about counting bites or consuming beets will go a long way towards promoting your family’s health and happiness.

WRITTEN BY NORA DANIELS

I was just hanging out, minding my own business, when I got the call the other day: “Uh, oh,” my ex said on the other line, “S**t’s about to get real.” Oh God, I thought, he has cancer. Or lost his job, or something else horrible happened. I braced myself for the worst. “Your mom just figured out that I unfriended her on Facebook,” he said. Oh thank God. Just another messy chapter in the 22- year drama saga between my mother and my ex-hubby.

When I was growing up, my mother was very fond of telling me that when you marry a person, you are also marrying that person’s family. She was, of course, right about that, along with a few other things having to do with cornstarch and facial hair removal. Anyway, I didn’t listen and ended up marrying into a family that, at best, misunderstood me and, at worst, reviled me. Although they really seem to like me now that I’m no longer a member of the family. (Maybe they feel sorry for me.) No matter. The point is that my ex, David, and I both had tumultuous and complicated relationships with each other’s kin.

When my marriage fell apart a few years ago, my mother did what most Mama Bears could be expected to do, she blamed David (because I am, of course, perfect in her eyes). She was pissed at him and she did not hide it. I was pissed Everything too, so I just kind of let her do her thing. But while I’ve healed, recovered and accepted responsibility, the two of them have continued to have their pissing you need matches, which have sometimes spilled over onto Facebook. Recently David finally decided that he’d had enough of her snarky comments and unfriended to help her her. As his co-parent and friend, I supported him and did my best to stay out of it. succeed.

It wasn’t until she tried to see some pictures of my son and his dad hunting that my mom realized she’d been unfriended (or “unfriendlied” as she cutely called it) by David. To her credit, she bravely confronted him and didn’t involve me. They spoke about it briefly, in a civil and respectful manner, and are – thankfully – still able to be in the same room together.

Because here’s the thing: Like it or not, when you have children with a person, that person’s parents are your child’s grandparents. And, unless circumstances strongly indicate otherwise, it’s mostly beneficial for your children to have relationships with their family and loved ones. My ex-husband and I agree on this. And we basically grew up together so each of us understands the intricacies Check out our free of the other’s family dynamics in a way that only a close confidante can.
