Wednesday 20th March A circular walk from Richmond Station, up the hill to Richmond Park, around the circumference of the Park and back to Richmond for a pub lunch. Wednesday 24th April A linear walk from Paddington Basin along the Regent's Canal and making a detour into Wormwood Scrubs before returning to the canal to finish at Harlesden, a distance of about 7.0 miles.# Lunch at The Grand Junction Arms, Harlesden. Wednesday 22nd May A circular walk from Hammersmith to Putney Bridge along the north side of the river and back to Hammersmith along the south side. Approximately 5 miles. Lunch at the Blue Anchor pub, Hammersmith. Wednesday 26th June A linear walk along the River Lea and around the Walthamstow Wetlands finishing in Clapton. Lunch at the Princess of Wales, Clapton. Wednesday 17th July A linear walk from Boston Manor to Kew, via the canal, Syon Park and St Margaret’s. Distance, approx. 6.5 miles Lunch at a pub in Kew. Wednesday 16th October This is a linear walk following the Wandle river from Mitcham to the River Thames at Wandsworth, about 6.5 miles. Lunch at the Ship pub at Wandsworth. Wednesday, 18th December A linear walk from Hype Park station around Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, through Green Park and St. James' Park, along Victoria Embankment and over Waterloo Bridge finishing at Waterloo, Distance is approximately 6.5 miles.. ..

REACH 11 SYON The Thames Landscape Strategy Review 3 3 7 Landscape Character Reach No. 11 SYON 4.11.1 Overview 1994-2012 • There has been encouraging progress in implementing Strategy aims with the two major estates that dominate this reach, Syon and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. • Syon has re-established its visual connection with the river. • Kew’s master-planning initiatives since 2002 (when it became a World Heritage Site) have recognised the key importance of the historic landscape framework and its vistas, and the need to address the fact that Kew currently ‘turns its back on the river’. • The long stretch of towpath along the Old Deer Park is of concern as a fl ood risk for walkers, with limited access points to safe routes. • Development along the Great West Road is impacting long views from within Syon Park. • Syon House and grounds: major development plan, including re- instatement of Capability Brown landscape: re-connection of house with river (1997), opening vista to Kew Gardens (1996), re-instatement of lakehead in pleasure grounds, restoration of C18th carriage drive, landscaping of car park • Re-instatement of historic elements of Old Deer Park, including the Kew Meridian, 1997 • Kew Vision, launched, 2008 • Kew World Heritage Site Management Plan and Kew Gardens Landscape Masterplan 2012 • Willow spiling and tree management along the Kew Ha-ha • Invertebrate spiling and habitat creation works Kew Ha-ha. • Volunteer riverbank management Syon, Kew LANDSCAPE CHARACTER 4.11.2 The Syon Reach is bordered by two of the most signifi cant designed landscapes in Britain. It is level walking, mainly on firm towpaths and tracks and some grass. There are steps at Richmond Lock Footbridge, with a detour to avoid them, and some short slopes. The route takes in Richmond riverfront, Old Deer Park and observatory, Richmond Lock, River Thames, Old Isleworth, Syon Park, Brentford Lock and the Grand Union Canal. Note that in the London Borough of Richmond and on the Thames Path the signposts and way marks have a black background - not the usual green. There are pubs and cafes at Richmond, Old Isleworth, Brentford, Richmond, Syon Park, Brentford and Boston Manor and public toilets at Richmond and Boston Manor stations. There are Underground stations at Richmond and Boston Manor. Overground and National Rail services run at Richmond. There is also a National Rail station at Brentford, as well as buses along the route. 13. Upper Thames Key plan Description The Upper Thames Natural Landscape Area follows the upper reaches of the Thames within Greater London, from Hampton Court and Bushy Park, through Richmond Park and Kew, Dukes Meadow, Barnes and Fulham to Battersea Park. The landform is flat and the whole area is within the largely still tidal Thames floodplain, with the exception of minor outcrops at Dukes Meadows and Putney. However, a slight slope between Fulham and Chelsea follows the overground railway line to Clapham Junction. The Upper Thames area is underlain by London Clay, with superficial 13. Upper Thames Upper 13. deposits of river gravels (Kempton Park Gravel Formation), silts (Langley Silt Members) at Richmond, Hounslow and Battersea, and alluvium along the bed of the River Thames. The soils are generally deep loams, with seasonally wet deep clay along the banks of the River Thames from Teddington to Barnes. This attractive, meandering section of the Thames was historically a popular site for royal palaces and their associated parks.
