COURSE DESCRIPTION A survey of major theological developments from the 19th to the 21st century. Topics covered may include liberal Protestantism, existentialism, neo-orthodoxy and current liberation, hermeneutical, ecumenical and evangelical theologies. This course aims at introducing students to existentialist philosophy in both its theistic and atheistic expressions, and in having students discern the influence of existentialism as either an ingredient of or a foil to contemporary philosophy and theology. In addition the course endeavours to have students assess whether existentialism is the precursor of postmodernism or the latter’s contradiction. Prerequisites: THEO 0531 and THEO 0532 II. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will be able to: 1 1: be acquainted with the thought of major representatives of the philosophical movement known as “existentialism”, and will be helped to see the influence of existentialism in the genesis and development of contemporary philosophy and theology. 2: locate existentialism in the history of western philosophy and theology. 3: trace the putative link between an existentialist thinker like Nietzsche (the most widely-read philosopher in history) and postmodernism. 4: demonstrate an understanding of Hegel’s philosophy as the occasion of the existentialist reaction. 5: assess existentialism’s repudiation of Hegel’s claim that his philosophy was the terminus of metaphysics since his philosophy, unlike others’, was not a description of, approach to and articulation of a metaphysical ultimate but was rather an aspect of the Absolute’s self- realization, and therefore itself “absolute.” 6: identify the ontic structure presupposed in each existentialist thinker’s anti-essentialist protest. 7: recognize the incorporation of existentialist themes in other disciplines; e.g., theology, literature, drama, and fine art. 8: see how existentialist philosophy is related to existentialist psychology and psychotherapy. 9: relate classroom investigations to thinkers not scheduled to be discussed in class; e.g., Albert Camus and Simone de Beauvoir. 10: appreciate the manner in which existentialism recalls theology to its proper vocation whenever theology appears to be in danger of becoming a species of rationalism that uses religious vocabulary. III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. REQUIRED TEXTS Charles Guignon and Derk Pereboom, eds. Existentialism: Basic Writings. Indianapolis: Hackett, 2001. ISBN: 0-87220-595-9 (pbk) This book provides the necessary readings in Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger and Jean-Paul Sartre. The instructor will provide photocopied readings for Martin Buber and Emil Fackenheim. A copy of the instructor’s The Committed Self: An Introduction to Existentialism for Christians will be given without charge to every student. Students are expected to come to class with the appropriate chapters read. B. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING Note: All written material may be submitted in French. Note: Hard copies alone may be submitted. 1. Interaction Paper: Due dates: Feb. 15, Mar. 22, Apr. 12. – 50% of final grade. The paper may be an analysis of the reading, a criticism of it, a discussion of some or several 2 of its implications, or a comparison between it and other thinkers/readings in the course, or a theological comment on or assessment of material read for class. This paper must be submitted no later than the end of class. Feb. 15: 700-word paper concerning any aspect of Overview, Hegel, Kierkegaard. Mar. 22: 700-word paper concerning any aspect of Nietzsche, Buber/Fackenheim. Apr. 12: 700-word paper due concerning any aspect of Heidegger, Sartre, 2. Essay: A 2000-word essay from list of topics or by permission of instructor. Due on April 12, 9:35 p.m.: 50% of final grade. Note: the essay is to explore a specific topic (see list of essay topics); it is not to be a summary of or selection from the class handout. The essay’s bibliography should include at least four scholarly references. Note: Do not reference the instructor’s book on Existentialism. (Professors are not permitted to have a student’s discussion of their book included in the marking scheme.) C. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF WRITTEN WORK Academic Integrity Integrity in academic work is required of all our students. Academic dishonesty is any breach of this integrity, and includes such practices as cheating (the use of unauthorized material on tests and examinations), submitting the same work for different classes without permission of the instructors; using false information (including false references to secondary sources) in an assignment; improper or unacknowledged collaboration with other students, and plagiarism. KEITH PUTT Langdon Gilkey maintained in 1969 that theological language was in "ferment" over whether "God" could be ex¬ pressed in language. He argued that "radical theology," specifically the kenotic christology in Altizer's "death of God" theology, best represented that ferment. Some twenty- five years later, in the postmodern context of the 1990's, whether one can speak of God and, if so, how remain promi¬ nent issues for philosophers of religion and theologians. One of the most provocative contemporary approaches to these questions continues to focus on the "death of God." Mark Taylor's a/theology attempts to "do" theology after the divine demise by thinking the end of theology without ending theological thinking. Taylor's primary thesis, predicated upon his reading of Jacques Derrida's deconstruetive philos¬ ophy, is that God gives way to the sacred and the sacred may be encountered only within the "divine milieu" of writing. God is dead, the self is dead, history has no structure, and language cannot be totalized in books; consequently, theo¬ logy must be errant and textually disseminative.

In an attempt to better understand Ehn’s contribution to postmodern theatre, and his engagement with one of theatre’s current challenges ( i.e., to make room for religious discourse), this study undertakes a close reading of three of Ehn’s plays in light of his self-declared theology, “Big Cheap Mysticism.” In my thesis I, taking Ehn at his word, explore the possible meanings and presence of the three descriptives, “Big,” “Cheap,” and “Mysticism” in a selection of representative plays from The Saint Plays. In chapter 1, I focus on Ehn’s notion of “Big” by way of a close reading of Tree of Life, Keep Firm. In like manner, in chapter 2 I situate the play, Incide as an exemplar of the concept of “Cheap.” Then, in chapter 3, I discuss Wholly Joan’s as representative of the core of Ehn’s theology, “Mysticism.” In my conclusion, I summarize Ehn’s theology as it can be understood from the reading of “Big,” “Cheap,” and “Mysticism” through the representative scripts. Most importantly however, I consider how Ehn’s theology functions within the larger context of postmodern Christian theology in an attempt to answer the question, “What do artists seeking to represent Christian tradition, narrative or the Divine on the contemporary stage have to gain from Ehn’s work?” iv For my parents, Dutt and Rukhsana.

Introduction 1.1 God and Gospel in Context “What it means to talk about God is far from indisputable,” even among theistic religions.1 A certain symbiosis seems evident by the inference that ours is an epoch analogous to that of which Dickens wrote: an age of wisdom and yet foolishness, belief and yet incredulity, light and yet darkness.2 The philosophical fluidity of the times is evidenced in the semantic domain with doublespeak and pliable language commonplace.3 Lack of consensus in meaning is pervasive; whether the prevailing philosophical ethos is modernism or postmodernism remains a moot point. The close philosophy-theology relationship invariably transforms philosophical tensions into theological tensions such that traditionally commonplace doctrines are now suspect. Hence, ‘God’ may be used with a variety of meanings and, consequently, doubt is cast upon once-hallowed Christian beliefs.     P ETER G OODWIN H ELTZEL New York Theological Seminary THE WEAKNESS OF GOD A review of John D. Caputo, The Weakness of God: A Theology of the Event (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2006). ISBN: 0-253-34704-1. FTER OVER FOUR DECADES of reinvigorating English language A Continental philosophy of religion, John D. Caputo has boldly offered a volume in constructive theology. In many post-structural circles “God” has come on hard times, but Caputo sets out in this massive volume to save the name of God from its cultured despisers. Caputo begins his theological meditation with the final words of Jacques Derrida (1930- 2004), read by his son at his graveside. Caputo’s theology is a postmodern expansion of St. Paul’s proclamation of the “weakness of God” (1 Cor. 1:29) refracted through St. Derrida notion of the “weak force” of the unconditional that lacks sovereignty. Framing himself as a postmodern anarchist, Caputo tries to get to “the root” of the doctrine of God and the reign of God. In Part I of the book he disputes the notion that an omnipotent God is the arche of the cosmos, arguing instead that God is a weak force that brings form to indeterminate and uncertain elements that are redeemed through the powerless power of God’s son; God is a call rather than a cause. In Part II he argues that the Kingdom of God is not a rule of Holy law, but a sacred anarchy that is embodied in works of love, forgiveness and hospitality. Immediately Caputo launches a frontal assault on the Christian doctrine of omnipotence (Part I, Chapters 1-4).

    Secular spirituality versus secular dualism: Towards postsecular holism as model for a natural theology Cornel W du Toit Institute for Theology and Missiology University of South Africa Abstract The term “secular spirituality” is meant to convey the contemporary phenomenon of spirituality as experienced in different spheres not associated with structured, institutionalised religion. An outline is given of the relation between secular reality (the natural realm) and religious/spiritual reality (the supernatural realm), as it developed from pre-secular animism (pre-modern unity with nature) to secular dualism (modernism) to post-secular holism (influence of postmodernism). Then follows a brief discussion of secular spirituality in Africa with reference to struggle spirituality. Secular spirituality in its technospiritual mode is becoming increasingly important and is dealt with cursorily before dealing with secular spirituality as a model for a postmodern natural theology. In this context “natural theology” is not concerned with proofs of God’s existence, but seeks to integrate the natural and supernatural dimensions of human life meaningfully. 1. INTRODUCTION The term “spirituality” can mean anything from a profound spiritual experience to an aesthetic experience; or it can simply fulfil a rhetorical function as an adjective or adverb. It may also be used metonymically to signify a sense of ecstasy, self-transcendence/joy/growth/renewal; unity; profound meaning; insight; religious experience, and the like. McGrath (1999:2) defines it thus: “Spirituality concerns the quest for a fulfilled and authentic life, involving the bringing together of the ideas distinctive of … [some] religion and the whole experience of living on the basis of and within the scope of that religion.” We shall use the term in light of this definition.

Caputo I characterize Merold Westphal’s synthesis of Christian faith and postmodern philosophy as an “epistemological” or “methodological,” postmodernism, one that sees postmodern thought as describing certain limits upon human under- standing while leaving open the question of how things are in the nature of things, that is, how things are understood by God. Postmodernism (unless it waxes dogmatic) is not denying God, but only that we are God. In a charac- teristically postmodern way, Westphal has found it useful to limit knowledge in order to make room for faith, in the tradition of Kant, where these limits are historical and linguistic rather than ahistorical and apriori.
