Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists.

Icona. Ispiratore. Eroe.

No stranger to comicbook-based material, Adler has produced such graphic-based fare as "Constantine," "Superman Returns" and the upcoming Brandon Routh starrer "Dead of Night," which is based on the popular Italian title "Dylan Dog." This material is definitely in my strike zone in more ways than one," Adler said, noting his prior role as a producer of such horror projects as the "Tales From the Crypt" series. "But what really appealed to me wasn't so much the genre trappings but rather the characters that really drive this story." Set during WWII, story revolves around an infectious mist unleashed on a military base that transforms its victims into preternatural creatures of the night. But when the survivors try to kill them, they adapt and change into something even more horrific and unstoppable. Studio 407's Alex Leung will also serve as a producer on "Night and Fog." Adler and McCarthy are also teaming to produce an adaptation of "Havana Nocturne" along with Eric Eisner. They also recently optioned Ken Bruen's crime thriller "Tower." "Night and Fog" is available in comic shops in the single-issue format and digitally on iPhone through Comixology.

Whether we work in film, television, publishing, music, or photography, we and our colleagues have all been affected by the rampant, illicit activity that occurs on the major internet platforms, including Google and Facebook. There has been growing concern in Washington, in the press, and among Americans about the lack of responsibility exercised by the major internet platforms toward harmful and illegal activity taking place on their services. For decades, online gatekeepers like Facebook and Google have turned a blind eye to the proliferation of widespread societal harms on their platforms. From sex trafficking to foreign influence over our elections, from privacy to piracy, it has become increasingly clear that more needs to be done to ensure platform responsibility. In recent hearings in both the House and the Senate, Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, characterized Silicon Valley’s failure to take an appropriately broad view of its responsibility as a “big mistake.” But whether the lack of responsibility was a “mistake” or something else, the failure of Facebook, Google, and others to take responsibility is rooted in decades-old government policies, including legal immunities and safe harbors, that treat these companies differently than other industries and actually absolve internet platforms of responsibility.

Dear Academy Member Some years are more susceptible than others to characterization with a glib phrase. For some, for example, this will be "The Year the Oscars were Stolen." Those of us who were involved, of course, will always remember that week, and we'll probably even refer to the year that way. But the 12 months were too filled with expanded programs, new programs and planned programs for that one event to characterize it. It truly was a transitional year. The switch from the 1900s to the 2000s, which fell midway in our fiscal accounting, is an excellent metaphor for this Academy year, firmly grounded in a tradition of excellence but looking forward to a blossoming future. We began to see the effects of our improved financial position. We tripled the funding of our grants program, announced the creation of an Academy Film Scholars competition and launched the first of what will be an ongoing series of membership forums. Membership committees worked diligently throughout the year on questions of awards categori es and branch makeup, while the staff searched for physical space into which some of the expanded and new programs can move.

JOSKOW ’70 M.PHIL., ’72 PH.D. On November 18, 1977, Harvey Milk, who ten days earlier had been elected as the first openly gay member of San Francisco’s Board of Supervi- sors, tape-recorded a will that included: “This is to be played only in the event of my death by assassination. I fully realize that a person who stands for what I stand for, a gay activist, becomes a target for somebody who is insecure, terrified, afraid, or very disturbed themselves…. If I am assassinated, I ask for the movement to continue, for the movement to grow.” A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and Mayor George Moscone were shot to death by Dan White, a disgruntled fellow city supervisor. As Milk had hoped, the movement No. continued, and grew. And Milk became a legend. In 2009, President Obama awarded him a posthumous Presidential Medal of S 8 5 E Freedom; in 2014 the U.S. Postal Service issued a Harvey Milk “Forever” stamp; and in 2016 the U.S. Navy named a ship in his A S O N honor. Milk’s life and legacy were detailed first in Randy Shilts’s bookThe Mayor of Castro Street (1982), and then in Robert Epstein’s Academy Award-winning documentary THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK (1985). Director DIRECTED BY GUS VAN SANT Gus Van Sant planned a dramatic film as early as 1991 (starring Robin Williams).
