October Sampler of the Month * Chart $18 From NeedleWorkPress … Jannet Speirs 1813 * Linen ~ 142 x 286, cost varies depending on count/size/margins * Silks ~ Belle Soie, $67.50 From the Chart: SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT JANNET’S SAMPLER Unique and quirky elements made Jannet Speirs’ sampler a delight to recreate for your stitching pleasure. We really aren’t sure of her age because the second digit is missing. We surmise, though, that she was a pre-teen or early teen based on the quality of workmanship. The house exhibits amazing precision and she was fastidious enough to include the ladies’ feathered hats, yet the lettering in her verse was rather haphazard (so much so that we took liberty to make it legible). She didn’t even finish stitching her alphabet! We call this version of her sampler “an adaptation” because the original was stitched in wool and we opted for silk. We also chose to replace missing stitches with what we thought likely would have been in those spaces, as well as modifying a few pieces of fruit in the baskets. The style of her sampler and spelling of her name, as well as the verse selected, indicate the likelihood of a Scottish origin for this 1813 sampler. Jannet’s surname is derived from an occupation—the spier was a watchman. The final ‘s’ in Speirs is genitive (possessive). The verse Jannet selected was recorded on page 127 of the Scottish Psalter & Paraphrases published in 1800. It is from Psalm 119 and begins with verse 5 (as noted bottom right of the stitched verse): O that thy statutes to observe thou would’st my Also from the chart: Jannet Speirs’ tattered 1813 sampler just begged to be charted to be enjoyed by ways direct! Then shall I not be sham’d, when I thy needleworkers today. Her work exuded charm, despite the tattered wool threads. Because we had to precepts all respect. “imagine” some of what she stitched, we must call this an adaptation, remaining true in spirit to the work Jannet’s hemstitched sampler is executed on a she so imaginatively created. Please be sure to read instructions, because although it appears to be slightly uneven weave homespun linen and repeating, the border does have its quirks. The spelling of Jannet’s name gives us a clue that she hailed measures 8”w x 17”h. from Scotland. We also found a Jannet Speirs who would have been the right age to create the sampler. Unfortunately, the numeral after “1” in her age is missing, so we’ll never know for sure. It makes them happy and what’s more, it gives them power to bless. Born five days before Christmas in 1827, Catharine was 11 years old when she stitched her vibrant sampler. She died in Hillsburgh only eight years after finishing her needlework. Weeks Dye Works linen and floss were used to create a nearly identical replica of her sampler. NeedleWorkPress CLARA KOSCHAT 1873 $16, 150 x 361, a vibrant Austrian sampler with five distinctive alphabets that surely was the moving force for NWP to add this sampler to their collection. Clara stitched her sampler in rich wool colors on a natural canvas, as was the rage at this time and place; the chart model is ELLEN HARRISON 1889, $18, a sampler that demonstrates the vision of NWP, knowing this stunning 19th century sampler would be so lovely on 36c linen instead of the 10c canvas she used for her 25” x 18” sampler. Her naive chair, umbrella, ship and cane join more common motifs, including birds, flowers, trees, a very large stag, and a blue-roofed house. When she ran out of space stitching the verse, Ellen added the final word on the top line. Go to page 32 to see this sampler stitched on 52/60 linen; its petite size is so charming ~ I wish I had a photo of it next to the original! Right, ISABELLA JOHNSTONE $16, 154 x 219, a very popular and charming sampler with Vickie’s favorite motif, the cow, and my favorites, roses, and a beautiful border. Far right, MARIA TILLEY 1835, $22 ~ my apologies for the ceiling lights reflected in the glass. The sampler is hanging very high in the shop, and that’s the best I could do, so I showed the chart cover just above it. It again has the favored cow, somewhat masked by the reflection in the glass. The chart model was stitched on 45c linen and measures approximately 13.3 x 17 TheThe Attic, Attic, Mesa, Mesa, AZ AZ Toll-Free: Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com www.atticneedlework.com Attic Events Schedule THE ATTIC PAGE6 Every Customer Appreciation/Stitch-In, Thursdays, 4 - Saturday, November 18, 6:00-8:00, Our 20th Annual Silent Thursday 8 PM.
