The demand of water is increasing day by day. So, groundwater resources play a vital role for additional demand by farmers and Industries and domestic usage leads to rapid development of groundwater. About 63% of available groundwater resources are now being used. However, the development is not uniform all over the State, and in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, intensive groundwater development had led to declining water levels, increasing trend of Over Exploited and Critical Firkas, saline water intrusion, etc. ADMINISTRATIVE SET UP Nagapattinam district is having administratie division of 5 Taluks,11 Blocks, 434 village panchayats, 8 town panchayats, 4 municipality ,31 Firkas and 523revenue villages. Nagapattinam District is Totally bifurcated into 31 Firkas. Basin and sub-basin The district is part of the composite east flowing river basin having Cauvery and vennar sub basin. Drainage The district is drained by Kollidam and Cauvery in the north, Virasolanar, Uppanar in the central part and Arasalar, TirumalairajanAr, Vettar, Kedurai AR, Pandavai Ar, Vedaranyam canal and Harichandra Nadi in the southern part of the district.

    8/21/2019 Nagapattinam | TWAD Nagapattinam District Profile Nagapattinam district is bounded in the North by Cuddalore district, in the west by Thanjavur and Thiruvarur districts and in the south and east by the Bay of Bengal. The District lies between 10º15’00 N to 11º 30' 00”N Latitude, 79º 30' 00”E to 79º 55' 00”E Longitude and has an aerial extent of 2377 sq.km. There are 11 Blocks, 434 Villages and 2952 Habitations in the District. Physiography and Drainage The entire Nagapattinam district is a plain terrain with the slope less than 1%. The topographical slope is towards east and southeast. The total length of the coast in the east and south is 225km. The district area falls under two river basins namely Cauvery subbasin, and Vennar subbasin. The district is drained by river like Kollidam and Cauvery in the North, Virasalar, Uppanar in the central part and Arasalar, T.R.Ar, Vettar Ar, Keduvai Ar, Pandavai Ar, Vedaranyam canal, Harichandranadi in the southern part of the district. The district forms the delta part of river Kollidam and Cauvery.
