  • Traffic Sensitive Streets – Briefing Sheet
Traffic Sensitive Streets – Briefing Sheet Introduction Oxfordshire County Council has a legal duty to coordinate road works across the county, including those undertaken by utility companies. As part of this duty we can designate certain streets as ‘traffic-sensitive’, which means on these roads we can better regulate the flow of traffic by managing when works happen. For example, no road works in the centre of Henley-on-Thames during the Regatta. Sensitive streets designation is not aimed at prohibiting or limiting options for necessary road works to be undertaken. Instead it is designed to open-up necessary discussions with relevant parties to decide when would be the best time to carry out works. Criteria For a street to be considered as traffic sensitive it must meet at least one of the following criteria as set out in the table below: Traffic sensitive street criteria A The street is one on which at any time, the county council estimates traffic flow to be greater than 500 vehicles per hour per lane of carriageway, excluding bus or cycle lanes B The street is a single carriageway two-way road, the carriageway of which is less than 6.5 metres wide, having a total traffic flow of not less than 600 vehicles per hour C The street falls within a congestion charges area D Traffic flow contains more than 25% heavy commercial vehicles E The street carries in both directions more than eight buses per hour F The street is designated for pre-salting by the county council as part of its programme of winter maintenance G The street is within 100 metres of a critical signalised junction, gyratory or roundabout system H The street, or that part of a street, has a pedestrian flow rate at any time of at least 1300 persons per hour per metre width of footway I The street is on a tourist route or within an area where international, national, or significant major local events take place.

THE VILLAGE Hinton Waldrist is an ancient village with a long and interesting history. The coat of arms is that of the St Valery family, Norman French knights who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. Their loyalty was rewarded with the granting of land at Hinton, together with the castle that once stood in what is now the grounds of Hinton Manor. Hinton is an Anglo-Saxon village name meaning “high settlement”. It was recorded in the Domesday Survey of 1085 as “Hentone”, the lord of the manor being Odo of Winchester. Early in the 12th Century, ownership of the manor was granted by Henry I to Guy de St Valery. The manor remained in the St Valery family until 1327, and the village became known as Hinton St Valery – subsequently corrupted to Hinton Waldrist.

  • St Mary the Virgin Buckland a Guide to Our Church
St Mary the Virgin Buckland a guide to our church PREFACE In 1975/1976 Richard Copus, who was then a student at Buckland College, compiled a comprehensive survey incorporating an account of the Architectural, Structural and Social history of Buckland church. His work provided both the stimulus for the first booklet and the greater part of its contents. This third edition incorporates additional information that has since come to light as well as more recent changes in the fabric of the church. A glossary and explanation of heraldic terms used herein has also been included. Richard Copus made extensive use of Charles Keyser's article in the Berkshire Archaeological Journal of January 1907, which included many interesting photographs of the church around 1900. Copus also made acknowledgements to the following: Professor J.R.Harding's lectures on the History of Buckland given in the village in 1951 Andrew S.N.Wright, 'A History of Buckland', 1966 The Berkshire Record Office, Reading The Throckmorton Family Archives at Coughton Court, Warwickshire Notes by the Rev J Capron (Vicar 1963 - 1971) To which the following should be added: ASHMOLE, Elias, 'History and Antiquities of Berkshire' with Notes by Henry Hinton 1811 - 1813 ARCHAEOLOGICAL JOURNALS, Bucks, Berks & Oxon 1907 DIOCESAN ECCLESIASTICAL PAPERS FARMER, David Hugh, 'The Oxford Dictionary of Saints' 1978 HALL, James, 'Dictionary of Subjects & Symbols on Art' 1974 HARRIS, C.G. • REPORT to FARINGDON DIVISION (Buckland with Gainfield, Buscot, Coleshill, Eaton Hastings, Faringdon, Gt Coxwell, Littleworth and Little Coxwell – July/August
REPORT TO FARINGDON DIVISION (Buckland with Gainfield, Buscot, Coleshill, Eaton Hastings, Faringdon, Gt Coxwell, Littleworth and Little Coxwell – July/August For information, all that is detailed within my monthly reports is already within the public domain and thus in the media. General OCC Report - The decision by the new Liberal/Green coalition at South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) to defer endorsing the emerging Local Plan has serious implications for the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) bid which would provide £218 million of vital infrastructure for the Didcot area. The preferred options of the coalition at the council meeting on 18th July were to either revise or withdraw the emerging Local Plan although any decision was deferred. Should either of these options be taken then the probable outcome is the collapse of the HIF bid with the consequent severe impact on the Didcot area infrastructure. This would then probably mean South’s existing Local Plan would come under pressure and large- scale speculative planning applications might come forward on inappropriate sites. Neighbourhood Plans that many town and parish councils have spent time working on will continue to provide some protection, but there is a real danger that developers might seek to exploit the situation as there would be no new Local Plan for Neighbourhood Plans to align with. Problems are not confined to SODC; if there is no HIF then the Vale Local Plan could also fail. This could mean that within months of the new administrations in South & Vale taking office, both Local Plans might fail due to the loss of £218 million for vital infrastructure in Didcot.

  • Rare Plant Register
1 BSBI RARE PLANT REGISTER Berkshire & South Oxfordshire V.C. 22 MICHAEL J. CRAWLEY FRS UPDATED APRIL 2005 2 Symbols and conventions The Latin binomial (from Stace, 1997) appears on the left of the first line in bold, followed by the authority in Roman font and the English Name in italics. Names on subsequent lines in Roman font are synonyms (including names that appear in Druce’s (1897) or Bowen’s (1964) Flora of Berkshire that are different from the name of the same species in Stace). At the right hand side of the first line is a set of symbols showing - status (if non-native) - growth form - flowering time - trend in abundance (if any) The status is one of three categories: if the plant arrived in Britain after the last ice age without the direct help of humans it is defined as a native, and there is no symbol in this position. If the archaeological or documentary evidence indicates that a plant was brought to Berkshire intentionally of unintentionally by people, then that species is an alien. The alien species are in two categories ● neophytes ○ archaeophytes Neophytes are aliens that were introduced by people in recent times (post-1500 by convention) and for which we typically have precise dates for their first British and first Berkshire records. Neophytes may be naturalized (forming self-replacing populations) or casual (relying on repeated introduction). Archaeophytes are naturalized aliens that were carried about by people in pre-historic times, either intentionally for their utility, or unintentionally as contaminants of crop seeds. Archaeophytes were typically classified as natives in older floras.
