    ABINGDON NATURALISTS’ SOCIETY GARDEN SURVEY REPORT for the PERIOD SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2011 Introduction The Abingdon Naturalists’ Society (ANS) aims to foster the study and appreciation of natural history among people living in Abingdon and district. With changes in climate and land development it is important that we understand the how these changes may influence our local flora and fauna. To this end ANS started a survey of the birds and other animals found in Abingdon and adjacent areas. Those interested in contributing to this important study were asked to complete a survey form to let us know. details of birds and other vertebrates plus some insects, seen in or near to their garden or place of residence . The BIRD survey aims to be more comprehensive than the RSPB survey and should give us details of the range of birds found in the area, as well as, an indication of their frequency of sighting. In keeping with BTO policy we did not ask for information on birds flying over head such as gulls or rooks. We did, however, ask for sightings of include Red kites, that circle and forage in gardens, as we are interested in the number n our area follow the reintroduction of this species. Information on Swift, Swallow and Martins foraging for insects over gardens is included . We asked participants who hear owls during the survey period to include this information in their returns. The ANIMAL survey is designed to give an idea of the main Vertebrate species in and around Abingdon including mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

    REPORT TO PARISH COUNCILS FEBRUARY 2020 FROM CLLR DAVID BARTHOLOMEW As per my note last month, I have changed the way I supply reports and I now send out my ‘General OCC Report’ to all parish councils at the beginning of the month. This is to ensure that parish councils that meet later in the month don’t receive out of date news. I will take questions on the report at PC meetings and then deliver my local report in the usual way. GENERAL OCC REPORT SPECIAL THIRD READING BRIDGE MEETING FRIDAY 31st JANUARY 2020 At an informal joint meeting of parish councils from the southern part of Oxfordshire on 31st January 2020 to discuss the proposed Third Reading Bridge, the following resolution was overwhelmingly passed: a) In the context of the Climate Emergency a car-based solution to a car-based problem that would pour thousands of cars and HGVs into Oxfordshire is totally inappropriate and should a new bridge be built it should be restricted to public transport, cyclists and pedestrians; b) Notwithstanding the above, if a car-based solution is pursued, the proposed bridge and necessary mitigation measures (i.e. improvements to the Oxfordshire road network) are not considered as two separate projects, but as one single project in order that the benefits, disadvantages and costs of the complete scheme can be holistically assessed. I was asked to communicate this fact to the MP Bridge Summit meeting in March. Representatives from these parish councils attended: Binfield Heath, Eye & Dunsden, Harpsden, Highmoor, Ipsden, Kidmore End, Rotherfield Greys, Rotherfield Peppard, Shiplake, Sonning Common.

A review of existing archaeological and historical sources suggested that the Site has a low potential for containing deposits of Prehistoric to Medieval date, and a high potential for containing deposits relating to a terrace of late 19th century buildings.
