We are most grateful to all those who have responded to the request for news and articles and to those who have taken time to write tributes for their family and friends. Please do keep sending them to us, either by post or email. We do, however, reserve the right to edit them if necessary.

Although every effort has been made to see that entries are correct, the Club cannot be held responsible for any errors that may have arisen.

We would especially like to hear from younger OFs, who have left school relatively recently. We welcome news of your studies, your travels, your families and your lives. We are always pleased to publish news of any OF gatherings or simply memories you have of your time at school. Please send your submissions to Deborah Digby at [email protected] and feel free to contact her if you have any queries on content of submissions.

We often receive requests from OFs for information about friends they have lost touch with over the years, so if there is anyone you would like to track down, please let us know and we will post it in the newsletter, if they are not on the OF database.

Our newsletters are now posted on the Old Felician section of the school website (www.stfelix.co.uk) and so are accessible to anyone using the site. If you do not wish your personal details to appear on line, please advise us when submitting your news.

Please note that the deadline for news for the 2019 newsletter is summer 2018 but we welcome submissions throughout the year.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 3 REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES

The Regional Representatives do a sterling job obtaining email addresses and contact details for local OFs and so ensuring our data base is kept up to date. They continue to arrange local social events including visits to cathedrals and gardens, coffee mornings, lunches in pubs and restaurants and London walks, which are open to ALL OFs, not just those living in their county or country. Why not contact a representative to see if she is organising a get-together?

And if your country or county is not represented yet, why don’t you volunteer? It is a great way of renewing friendships made during your time at Saint Felix. Just contact Caroline Macmillan at [email protected] and she will add you to the list.

We are delighted to welcome all Old Felicians who left Saint Felix during 2017 as members of the Old Felicians’ Club. We wish them every success and look forward to hearing their news and to meeting them at future events. Remember to use the OF website on the school website too!

OLD FELICIAN WEBSITE

Old Felicians have their own section on the school’s website www.stfelix.co.uk, which is currently being updated. There you will find news of forthcoming events as well as reports and photographs of reunions, etc. Contact the OF Club Secretary with contributions.

ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS

Please let us know if you would prefer to receive the newsletter by email, especially if you live abroad, as the cost of posting out the newsletter is soaring. The newsletters are available in PDF form on the OF section of the school’s website.

8 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 CONTRIBUTIONS TO FUTURE NEWSLETTERS

We look forward to receiving your contributions, which are of the most popular features of the newsletter, be they reminiscences, news of what you have done since leaving Saint Felix, reports of get-togethers or reunions or articles of interest to Old Felicians. Please let us know who attended reunions, along with their maiden names and house/dates at Saint Felix.

DATABASE – THIS MEANS YOU

The latest database is only as good as the information YOU give us, and we are finding that changes, particularly to email addresses, are not kept up to date. This is very frustrating for the regional reps as well as for our membership secretary. PLEASE drop a quick email to [email protected] confirming your latest name, address, email and phone numbers, if any of these have changed.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 9 CHAIRMAN’S LETTER 2017

Dear Old Felicians

This has been a relatively quiet year as far as the OFC is concerned after all the celebrations in 2016. I do feel very fortunate to have been let in gently and carefully guided through my first full year as your Chairman. Caroline has been remarkably tolerant of my many foibles and failings and, as always, she has been efficiency personified. I am grateful to her for providing all documentation well in advance and alerting me to any news about Old Felicians.

I attended the lunch at Leander which was so expertly and professionally organised by Rosemary Scott; it was a splendid occasion which I hope may be repeated in the not too distant future.

Margaret Angus and I set up an exhibition ‘The Way We Were’ in the Sports Hall foyer to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the founding

10 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 of Saint Felix. The exhibition coincided with the senior department’s summer production which enabled many parents and visitors to gain some knowledge of the school’s history and development. Fortunately Margaret has great expertise in organising display material and I thank her for the many hours she devoted to this and to the archives in the last year. It was very pleasing to hear Margaret Isabella Gardiner and Saint Felix being referred to on several occasions at the recent Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Festival in – Miss Gardiner rented a house there from Elizabeth Garrett Anderson when she first established the school.

It has been good to hear of the many successes of the school over the past year – it is continuing to go from strength to strength under the leadership of James Harrison. On Parents’ Day the Old Felician prizes were awarded to Rose Sida and Jessica Westlake. Rose has gone on to study classics at King’s College, Cambridge and Jessica is at the University of Bath reading chemistry. Please do let us know of your achievements at university/college and beyond.

Now it is time to turn our thoughts to 2018 (I am conveniently skipping over the festive season!) and I do encourage as many of you as possible to attend the AGM and Lunch at the Mansion House in March. This promises to be a once in a lifetime experience and Caroline is already in full swing with plans for the occasion. I do thank Mrs Charles Bowman (Samantha Kemball, 1974-1984) for all her help with this event. Samantha is the 4th OF Lady Mayoress following in the footsteps of Ursula, Lady Bowater, Joyce, Lady Waley-Cohen and Anne, Lady Jenkins.

I hope that you will like the new format of this newsletter. Many thanks to Debbie Digby for collating the material and to those stalwarts who spent many hours proof-reading and formatting.

All good wishes

Fran D’Alcorn

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 11 MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD

Having been in the hot seat now for over a year and part of the school for over three years, (if I may be so bold) perhaps I could now claim to have a good understanding of what makes Saint Felix special. I am pleased that the entire school community embraced the opportunity presented by the 120th anniversary celebrations both to reflect and look forward simultaneously: I reminded all pupils of the history of the school and challenged them to carve out their own place within it.

Schools change. Some change is for good and strengthens a school; some is forced due to compliance and market forces, with varying degrees of benefit, and some change is regressive, despite masquerading as progressive. My job primarily is to make sure that

12 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 all pupils are safe and to develop their minds, encouraging them and providing them with the opportunities to grow intellectually and to aim high. But it is still crucial that the early history of the school, the aims of its founder and the experiences of all Felicians are remembered and enjoyed by our current pupils as well as future ones.

Fran D’Alcorn and Margaret Angus have spent a lot of time re-categorising and generally sorting out the school archives and for this I am most grateful. I hope that we can soon give the archives the space it deserves as its current location is far from ideal.

The school goes from strength to strength. Our A Level results were excellent and comparable with any other Independent school in East Anglia. Rose Sida, , secured her place to read Classics at King’s College Cambridge and there were other successes too, with pupils gaining places at other top institutions including Bath, Royal Holloway, Manchester, Reading, Leeds, Warwick and Norwich University of the Arts, studying a variety of courses including Ancient History, Economics, Drama, Maths, Chemistry, Musical theatre and Textiles. At GCSE we achieved a frightening 97% pass-rate in Maths (the national average was 68%) and 90% pass-rate in English (the national average was 64%). And so with the school anticipating significant capital investment over the next few years, things are looking healthy both inside and outside the classroom. Exciting times ahead!

We are brave and strong because of our past and I urge all Old Felicians to come back and visit the school whenever an opportunity presents itself. I have always felt supported by you all as a group, as well as by certain individuals on the committee. Past, present and future are all entwined at Saint Felix and our links with the past are as strong as ever.

Felix Quia Fortis

James Harrison, Headmaster

RECENT EVENTS OLD FELICIANS’ LUNCH, LEANDER CLUB, HENLEY-ON-THAMES, 12 APRIL 2017

On the 12 April 2017, a splendid lunch for Old Felicians took place in a private dining room overlooking the river at the renowned Leander Club at Henley-on-Thames. Guests were warmly greeted from noon with a glass of Leander pink champagne and canapés and after Fran D’Alcorn said the Old Felicians’ Grace, which had been specially composed by Canon Fitch, Chaplain of Saint Felix School from 1951-1970, a delicious lunch followed, starting with fresh English asparagus, then duck marinated in honey and thyme and ending with Eton mess. The floral table decorations of yellow and white flowers echoed the school’s colours and before each place setting was an individual posy of sweet smelling hyacinths and yellow roses tied in a green ribbon on which was printed in gold the school’s motto: Felix Quia Fortis.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 17 The event had been efficiently organised by Rosemary Scott and many thanks are due to her for making it such a very special occasion. OFs had travelled from Suffolk, West Midlands, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, London, Berkshire, Dorset and Lancashire to renew friendships and remember years spent at Southwold. We were particularly pleased that Phoebe Lloyd was able to come as she had been at school during the war years, first at Tintagel and then Hinton St George and was then recruited to work at Bletchley Park, we were fascinated to hear her stories.

Those attending were: Fran D’Alcorn (Former Headmistress), Rosemary Scott (Lobban, Somerville 1961-66), Jean McArthur (Clarke, Somerville 1940-50), Phoebe Lloyd (Tyler, Fawcett 1938-43), Anne Froom (Charlesworth, Clough 1959-63), Lyn Kennedy (Noel, Clough 1960-64), Jayne Tracey (Forsythe, Gardiner 1950-57), Lizzie Strowlger (Roberts, Fawcett 1952-61), Liz Scott (Myers, Somerville 1961-66), Claire Weldon (Gessler, Somerville 1961-65), Carol Kershaw (Warford, Fawcett 1947-54), Caroline MacMillan (Hayward, Fawcett 1954-60) and in attendance Colin MacMillan, chief chauffeur and photographer.

18 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 LONDON REUNION

A reunion of Old Felicians took place at Brasserie Zedel in London on 1 April 2017 for Maria Lopez, who was visiting the UK from Bogota, Colombia. Those attending were Kelly Burrell Saunders (Burrell), Juliette Lawrence (Barker), Rachel Lambert (Newby), Ruth Nicholson (Robertson), Justine Ashby (McCarthy), Kate Rogers (Kemball), Lucy Rowbottom (Collier), Maria Louise Maxwell (Pomfrey), Alison Bailey (Britton) and Maria Lopez. They were all at Saint Felix between the years of 1975 and 1982.

OLD FELICIANS’ CLUB AGM 2017

The Old Felicians’ AGM was held at Saint Felix School on Saturday 17 June 2017. It was a smaller gathering than the previous year when so many Old Felicians returned to bid farewell to Fran D’Alcorn who retired as Headmistress of the school. However, as the new Chairman of the OF Club, she welcomed those who had journeyed to Southwold. James Harrison, Headmaster, reported that the school is doing well and pupil numbers continue to increase. After the meeting there was an opportunity to see the exhibition “The Way We Were”, a photographic history of the school since its founding in 1897 to the present day which had been created by Margaret Angus and Fran D’Alcorn.

LONDON REUNION LUNCH

Erica de Courcy (Salisbury, Somerville 1943-48) once again organised a reunion lunch for Old Felicians at the Ishta restaurant in Marylebone on 19 October 2017. It was a smaller gathering than in previous years and several OFs, who had been at the school when it was based at Hinton St George during the war years, sent their apologies as they were not able to journey to London, although Janet Buchanan-Smith (Lawrie, Gardiner 1942-46) once again travelled down from Scotland. It was a happy reunion with lots of chatting and laughter, in true Old Felician fashion!

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 19 SWISS REUNION

The annual lunch and reunion of Swiss OFs was held on Saturday 14 October 2017 at the Cafe de Grancy in Lausanne.

Those attending included: Ann Hadfield, Fawcett 1945-50, Jenny Heller Pratt (Ollington), Clough 1953-58, Jean McArthur (Clarke), Somerville 1946-50, Corinne Hirter (Thomason), Somerville 1965‐69, Sarah Nevill (Stinson) Clough 1963-68 and Corinne Rietmann.

We six had a most enjoyable brunch/lunch and happily Ann Hadfield was well enough to join us after suffering two strokes in the spring. We all plan to meet again next year in the same place as it’s relatively easily accessible for OFs from different parts of the country.

And who knows – maybe a few more OFs will move to Switzerland one day?

CLASS OF 78/80 CAMBRIDGE REUNION

On Friday 30 October, 12 Old Felicians, mostly from East Anglia, met in Cote Brasserie in Cambridge, for a dinner kindly arranged by Susan Perry. It was a warm night in a very warm restaurant and given our age, there were a number of red faces and a lot of waving of Spanish fans, but we had a wonderful evening.

Although some of us hadn’t seen each other for 37 years, time slipped away and it felt as if we’d all been together at school only last week. We didn’t have nearly enough time to catch up on everything that everyone

20 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 has been up to over the years, so unsurprisingly, the four OFs staying over in a hotel sat up till 2.30am chatting. It was agreed to do it again very soon and to try to track down more of our contemporaries to join us. Those attending were: Susan Perry (St G’s and Clough, 1970-80), Deborah Digby (Wilkinson, Bronte 1973-80), Charlotte Hare (St G’s and Fawcett, 1970-80), Mandy Perkins (Shardlow, Bronte 1975-78), Nicky Ellis (Rush, Somerville 1973-80), Penny Miller-Williams (Fawcett 1973-80), Vanessa Wheeler (Swift, Gardiner 1973-78), Mariette Nafig (Fowle, Clough 1978-80), Jane Stiles (Somerville 1973-78), Emma Green (Fotheringham, Clough 1973-80), Isabelle Grote (Gardiner, 1975-80), Claire Weeks (Beaumont, Gardiner 1973-80).

40 YEAR REUNION, LONDON

Despite the best efforts of the OF newsletter, it is a fact that many of our year had lost touch.

In the late 70s many people left school after O Levels. Some went to jobs or training while others were naturally enticed to boys’ public schools which were, by then, opening up their sixth forms to girls. This meant that the vast majority of girls packed their trunks and moved on to new schools and new lives. Some of us, still in contact, had not actually seen each other in the flesh for far too many years. Realising (with horror) that this was now 40 years ago, some serious effort was needed to actually get together rather than just hoping it would happen, as we wrote every year in our Christmas cards.

So it was that a group of 12 came together one July evening in London. It was truly wonderful to meet up with old friends with whom we had shared so much. Much reminiscing, laughter and general catching up was had and old, special friendships rekindled. We left wanting more time together and promising to do it all again soon!

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 21 We were: Lisa Wilkinson (Richardson) – Gardiner 1972-79, Philly Coghlan (Troughton) – St G’s & Clough 1970-77, Sophie Jolowicz – Somerville 1972-77, Gerry Irvine (Deller) – St G’s & Clough 1970-79, Judy Mawson (Hicks) – St G’s & Somerville 1969-77, Laura Jarratt (Gough) – Bronte 1972-79, Caroline Sprake – Somerville 1972-77, Pip Kemsley – Somerville 1972-77, Caroline Barkham – Somerville 1973-77, Emma Moore (Davies) – Somerville 1972-77, Deborah Digby (Wilkinson) – Bronte 1973-80, Fi Jones (Ferguson) – Clough 1977-79.

There were many old friends we were unable to get in touch with. If you would like to be part of our next reunion, please get in touch! [email protected]

OLD FELICIAN GOLF

The OF golfers hold an annual meeting at different golf clubs around the country and take part in the Tassie competition and the Rudyard Trophy. We would welcome any new golfers to join us and all information can be obtained from Gilda Buckwell (Clarke), at [email protected] or Adur Lodge, The Street, Old Shoreham, West Sussex BN43 5NJ or Tessa Summers at [email protected]

TASSIE FOURSOMES

The OF golfers fielded a team of four players in this year’s Tassie Foursomes, which is held annually at the Berkshire Golf Club in June. Tessa Summers, Gilda Buckwell, Vicky Wheeler and Rachael Goldsmith represented Saint Felix. They came a creditable 12th out of 30 teams. For further information about the Tassie, a competition for the alumnae of independent girls’ schools, please contact Anthea Franklin at [email protected] or look at their website: www.thetassiefoursomes.co.uk

22 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 RUNYARD TROPHY – 4 SEPTEMBER 2017 AT THE THETFORD GOLF CLUB

Once again, Saint Felix entered a team in this mixed inter-schools’ golf competition, designed for ex-pupils of schools in Suffolk and Norfolk. Unfortunately we did not manage to win the beautiful claret jug shaped Runyard Trophy and very large bottle of claret like last year! Other schools that competed were College, Woodbridge, Greshams, Culford, Ipswich and Norwich. All Stableford scores counted towards the team’s overall score. The 6 players representing Saint Felix were Liz Smith, Ann Lockheart, Anthea Franklin, Gilda, Buckwell, Vicky Wheeler and Tessa Summers.

OLD FELICIAN GOLF DAY – 6 NOVEMBER 2017

It was a glorious sunny day for our annual Old Felician Golf Day which was held at Thorpeness in Suffolk this year. We had three teams of three playing a fun format of multiplying the two highest stableford points together plus the lowest stableford score for each hole. This did not prove quite as difficult to calculate as first thought (by some players) and not even a Maths A Level or even an O Level pass was needed to work out 3 points x 0 points + 0 points = nothing! However the winning team of Vicky Wheeler, Jackie Whitwell and Liz Ireson managed to score on every hole which is probably why they were the winning team!

The players in group photo left to right: Vicky Wheeler (Pickering) Somerville, Rachael Goldsmith (Podd) Clough, Di Taylor (Stannard) Bronte, Liz Ireson (Tinsley) Fawcett, Tessa Summers (Ellis) Gardiner, Sarah Rearden Fawcett, Gilda Buckwell (Clark) Clough, Liz Smith (Jones) Clough, Jackie Whitwell (McCloud) Gardiner.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 23 Just for fun the player with the highest individual score (Vicky with 35 points) was presented with the Saint Felix Green Cloak (Jacket) and Tunic (on loan from the School Drama Department)! She was thrilled …… to make sure it was returned safely!

Any OFs wishing to join us next year then please email me [email protected]

FIONA EDMOND Macdonald, Somerville 1974-84

Having turned 50 last year Fiona was persuaded to enter the English Senior Ladies Golf Championship. So, in May this year, following on from the County Championships at which she successfully defended her stroke play title, (which meant she didn’t have time for a practice round!), she travelled to South Staffordshire and played the course blind for the 2 stroke play rounds. Having safely qualified for the matchplay stages she enjoyed a fantastic run of form, through to knock out rounds, playing better each round, and beating 4 previous champions on the way. The final was close, and against a good friend, but Fiona held on to win by 2/1.

This victory gained her enough points on the order of merit to be selected to play for the Ladies Senior Golf Team for the European Team Golf Championships in Slovakia. The team of 6 travelled to Skalica in September and 26 years on from the last time she represented England, Fiona was delighted to lead the qualifying competition with rounds of 72 and 73 helping England to qualify in 1st position. In the quarter final England beat Spain and the semi was

24 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 against Ireland who were last year’s European champions. Again it was very close but England squeaked home to earn a place in the final against France. The last day was unbelievably windy and sadly the French coped with the conditions better than the English did and won by a point, but nevertheless a silver medal was a good result.

In October Fiona travelled to Newport for the Home Internationals which were all keenly contested matches and England were pipped on the last day by Ireland to finish in second place. Fiona says “Twenty years ago when I was housebound with ME I would never have believed I would ever be well enough again to make it round a golf course let alone play competitively, which makes the successes of this year all the more special”.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 25 “A number of them record occasions such as house picnics in the summer term, often at Thorpeness and also Saturday trips on bikes, which were permitted when we got to the Lower Sixth and often took us as far as Aldeburgh or even Bungay to go shopping. There was also the time we were in quarantine for polio, greatly feared in those days; fortunately we had only two mild cases.

I have very little information on what happened to the girls in the photographs once they left school. Alison Souper was one of the first students at what was then New Hall in Cambridge, a very considerable achievement, and I believe she was awarded a First in Classics. Janet Thomas-Davies read Geography at Girton, Angela Vartan, though studying languages at school, then took sciences at a tech., qualified as a doctor and became a haematologist in Oxford. Janet Weir, I think, went to St Andrews, Carol Warford to Bristol, Louise Rutterford to Nottingham, Pat Bromley studied Geography at Reading and Sarah Campbell Taylor went to the Royal College of Music. I read Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge, worked on various excavations in Britain and later in northern Greece with my (American) husband. More recently I worked in publishing and journalism.

It’s quite interesting to acknowledge that school friendships didn’t seem to me to last, at least among this group. I now see something of both Pat Bromley (Kemsley) and Sarah Campbell Taylor (Green) though this has been due to chance meetings during the last 20 years or so and finding we enjoyed each other’s company and had interests in common. I have also seen Angela Vartan (Dike) because she got in touch with me through the Old Felician.

Thinking back over what is now a long stretch of time, I’m extremely grateful to the school for giving me the chance to work with two superb teachers, Beryl Brown for biology and Veronica Owen for history – the most that anyone can ask for – and in what was then an excellent library. I hated sports – freezing fields on that windswept plateau – and worked hard out of boredom. The boredom, and those two fine teachers, were

26 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 what gained me a place at university, which made all the difference in the world to my life subsequently.

I think Saint Felix turned us out, at that time, remarkably immature and unprepared for life in the real world: maybe that would have been the case whether we’d been at any other school, though perhaps one in a less remote location would have been different. The school ethos and regime were emotionally stultifying and I think the isolation from a ‘normal’ community was a disadvantage. I found out at Cambridge that there seemed to be a great contrast between what I’d gone through and the experiences of the men at boarding schools.

On the other hand, those bike rides and picnics were fun ... ”

BRENDA HANCOCK Somerville 1945-49

I have been asked to write a brief synopsis of my memoir, ‘Ever-Widening Circles or Road to BABA’, just published in New York and easily available from Amazon, etc. As the title suggests, the most important part of my book focuses on my enduring relationship with Mouni Baba, a truly extraordinary human being and a spiritual Master, who took a vow of lifelong silence at the age of 32.

Starting with early childhood in China, I recall growing up and being educated in England (including at Saint Felix) during and immediately after the Second World War. There followed in due course four years’ teaching in Nairobi, giving the opportunity for interesting travels in East Africa and ending with a drive from Nairobi to Cape Town in 1960.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 27 After that I was for ten years the head of the school founded in 1962 at Cobham Hall, in Kent. This in turn was followed by going to India, meeting Baba and a meaningfully different life. I returned to live and work in England, briefly trying my hand at politics, then joining the erstwhile Equal Opportunities Commission as one of its principal officers. I would describe my brief memories of Saint Felix as being rather more rueful than self-congratulatory!

I haven’t been a particularly active Old Felician, though I always read the magazine with a lot of interest, and Pam Clark (Chadwick) has taken me along to meetings with some of my contemporaries from time to time. We are all getting rather long in the tooth these days and don’t get about as much as we did! However, as I write this I am at Baba’s childhood home in North Kerala, India.

NICCI CARRUTHERS (Williamson) Gardiner 1975-83

I was in Gardiner from 1975 to 1983, active in lacrosse and other sport and Fran D’Alcorn and Karen Money (who I know sadly died) were really instrumental in my sport enjoyment and success at the time. After school I went to live in Africa for a while, then University in Southampton and have been living and working in London and the south from then on. Now living in a village close to Basingstoke, Hampshire.

JANE JAMES (Kendall) Clough 1953-58

Since leaving Saint Felix I have been married twice and had three children, Emma (52), Jonathan (50) and Amanda (38) and now also have eight grandchildren aged between 21 and 6 months. I am passionate about my grandchildren and gardening – in no particular order. Now living in Braintree.

28 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 MARGERY EAST Clough 1953-57

I am still living in Sydney, Australia. Unfortunately when I am in the UK I seem to be visiting friends and relatives around the country and my dates never seem to coincide with OF events.

I am a member of the Country Women’s Association of New South Wales, CWA, the equivalent to the WI in the UK. In August 2016 I attended the triennial conference of the Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) at Warwick University. It is primarily a facilitating organisation to help women in the developing countries with projects to assist with their living conditions and to promote self help projects. In May 2017 I went to New Zealand for the ACWW Pacific area conference.

I am very happy for my email address to be passed on to OFs visiting Sydney and as a local tour guide I would be pleased to show them some of the sights. [email protected]

WILLIAM FOSTER Kay 2003-13

William Foster has been awarded a BSc (Hons) Rural Land Management (2.1) at the Royal Agricultural University, Cirencester.

MARGARET GILLIAN BLAKE (Dowing) Gardiner 1940-43

We were recently contacted by Simon Blake, Gillian’s son, who wrote to say that although his mother’s memory is not as good as it was, he enjoys talking to her about her school days at Saint Felix, which she spent first at Tintagel and then Hinton St George. Gillian went on to train as a physiotherapist in Birmingham and subsequently worked in

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 29 Salisbury and the Radcliffe Infirmary and after her marriage in 1951 the family lived in King’s Lynn. She now lives at Melton Mowbray. Gillian is still in touch with Erica Burgon (Bache) and at Simon’s request, we were able to contact some of her contemporaries including Betty Hay and Janet Buchanan-Smith and accordingly passed on messages to Simon for his mother.

JULIA NORTH BEM (Plumpton) Somerville 1948-54

Julia has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for services to the community on the Isle of Man. She received it from the Lord Lieutenant Governor, Sir Richard Gooney KCMG VSO, in the presence of fifty friends and relatives. Until this year, she has for sixteen years been Chairman of the Marown and District Branch of the Isle of Man Anti-Cancer Association. She has also been Poppy Appeal Organiser for her local branch of the Royal British Legion. She is still involved in these charities on the Island but has now felt that the time has come to pass the organising on to the younger generation.

Julia and her husband David now have more time to help with the school run for their grandchildren who live nearby.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

From time to time we receive requests for information about an OF as contact with them has been lost over the years. If anyone knows where the following are now, could you let Caroline MacMillan know?

Kay Arnold: Kay lived in Suffolk and was at Saint Felix around 1959-64 and it is believed she went to live in America.

30 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 Nicci Carruthers (Williamson, Gardiner 1975-83): Would love to make contact with the following: Carolyn Ireson, Sarah Goldsmith, Judith Scargill, Marina Samad, Tanya Woolf, Amanda Wilkinson, Elizabeth Watson, Lee Hudson, Titilayo Maja, Sarah Rowell. TRIBUTES

MARION CORDY (Brown) Clough 1937-44

I am proud to write about my mother, Marion. Marion’s association with Saint Felix began when she attended Centre Cliff. With the onset of war, Marion moved to Jersey from her London home, to her grandparents as “a safe haven”. This did not prove to be the case, but thankfully Marion got out in time before Hitler saw fit to invade! Soon afterwards Saint Felix was evacuated, first to Tintagel and then to Hinton St George in Somerset. Marion developed many lifelong friends during these years and had lots of fun and high jinks including climbing across a large pipe over a reservoir; one of the group fell in and clothes were shared out. A member of staff saw them on the way back but was decent enough not to say anything. That would not happen today – Health and Safety.

I too was at Saint Felix and in my first summer term went into the swimming pool without permission; I was fearful of what my mother might say when she was told by the school. However, true to form, she said, “I did the same myself”.

Marion had a long and very full life, joining the Wrens upon leaving school and then trying her hand at many things including sailing on the

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 31 Walton backwaters, chemistry lab Mrs Alice Davies with Mrs Marion Cordy of the Surrey Circle. assistant, a guide at Sherborne Castle and at a butterfly farm. Marion entertained many of our friends and was always the life and soul of a party.

I leave you with some words left in her own handwriting – “Think deeply, speak gently, love much, laugh often, work hard, give freely and Be Kind”.

As many people told us after her death – Marion was a Great Lady (and mother).

Josephine Saunders (Clough 1965‐71)

ALICE DAVIES (Gardiner) Bronte 1936-38

Alice was the niece of Margaret Isabella Gardiner and was a pupil at Saint Felix for only a relatively brief time, leaving after successfully completing her General School Certificate.

In 1984 she was the guest speaker on Parents’ Day and delivered a very informative talk about her aunt’s life and career. She did admit that she did not know her very well personally as she only had the opportunity to meet her a few times before Miss Gardiner died in 1944.

Alice’s death means that the school’s last remaining direct link in the chain with Miss Gardiner has now been broken but her legacy continues and her philosophy and principles underpin the school’s ethos.

32 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 DIANA EATON (Hawkins) Fawcett 1965-74

Diana Hawkins’ funeral, which took place on 17 November 2016, was well-attended, with both central aisles of St Edmund’s full. Victor Scott played the organ and piano. There were about 12-15 OFs of her vintage there including: Sharon Upton, Tessa Sawyer, Penny Jenkins, Julie Hatch, Mary Pawle, Nicky Davidson, Caroline Logie, Mary-Ann Pugh, Philippa Brown and Vicki Snodgrass (sorry, I only know them by their maiden names as they were almost all my 1st XI hockey players when I first arrived at Saint Felix).

Fran D’Alcorn

ANNE GLYN-JONES Gardiner 1936-41

Anne was the eldest of 3 sisters, daughters of Sir Hildreth Glyn-Jones, a High Court judge. Aged 7 she ran away to sea but, having eaten all the cakes she had taken for the journey and not knowing where the sea was, she returned home. She came to Saint Felix in 1936 and became one of a select group of pupils who experienced the school on 3 different sites – Southwold, Tintagel and Hinton St George.

From an early stage she became involved in the Debating Society and arranged for her father to address it on the art of debating.

Anne played an active role in drama productions (one of her performances was described as ‘particularly good’) and play-readings and also represented her house and the school in hockey and tennis.

In her Sixth Form years she was a member of the Library Committee, Prefect, Senior Prefect, Second Head of School and also gained a certificate for Home Nursing together with her matriculation certificate.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 33 She contributed articles to the school magazine about Tanganyika’s contribution to the Second World War and her hiking trip in the Lake District.

In January 1942, just weeks after leaving school, she joined the WRNS and was recruited (unbeknown to herself and fellow colleagues) by Bletchley Park as a telephonist and, after spending several months at a Y-service listening station in Scarborough, was posted to Gibraltar. Her initial thought was of finding romance at the Rock where servicemen outnumbered Wrens by 200 to one but endless efforts to boost garrison morale and suffering from bruised feet at too many dances ended this dream. From a hut high on the Rock, Anne and fellow Wrens kept continuous watch, searched airwaves for More code and learned to recognize German operators’ ‘chat’.

After the war Anne read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford before working for the World Health Organisation in Geneva. After several years in Canada which included working for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Ottawa, she returned to England and from 1964-71 was personal assistant, archivist and researcher to Harold Macmillan who was compiling his 6 volume memoirs, one of which he dedicated to Anne. From 1973-85 she was a research fellow at the University of Exeter.

Retiring to Topsham in Devon in 1996 she wrote ‘Holding up a Mirror: How Civilisations Decline’ and in 2017 published her memoir ‘Morse Code Wrens of Station X’. Anne was an enthusiastic gardener and became Chairman of Land Heritage, a charity promoting organic agriculture. She never married but maintained a great interest in the lives of her many nephews and nieces.

34 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 LUCY MATTHEWS Member of Staff 1975-85

Lucy Matthews joined the staff as Head of the English department in 1975, retiring in 1985 after cajoling and guiding many pupils into achieving high grades in their O Level and A Level examinations. In the school magazine of 1985 her successor, Iain Mathieson, wrote: ‘Her lessons will be long remembered for their emphasis on clarity and precision in the use of English. Many girls have cause to be grateful to her and they owe their success in public examinations to her painstaking care and concern.’

This comment was very much reflected in the tributes paid to her by Old Felicians on Facebook when they heard of her death. Her lessons were especially memorable for her vocal renditions of Shakespeare’s sonnets and ‘Who is Sylvia?’. She also perfected an unerring aim when throwing the board rubber.

In retirement Lucy was very active, pursuing her lifelong interests in ornithology and Dickens. Despite her advanced age, she was still attending retired staff coffee mornings at the Randolph, catching the bus from Southwold and then walking back downhill to town – and this was when she was in her early 90s!

MELODY PERKINS (Tannett) Clough 1959-62 Daughter of Helen Tanner (Morton) Clough 1929-34 Sister of Mary Myers

My dearest sister Melody died on 24 November 2016 aged 70 and her funeral took place in Waterbeach, Cambridge on 5 December 2016. She had battled with MS for many years but was a tremendous fighter, never giving up on anything and she lived a very full life.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 35 Melody was brought up in a hamlet in the beautiful countryside of the north Derbyshire Peak District and lived an idyllic childhood. She was one of five children and was sent to Saint Felix in 1959 as it was the school attended by our mother Helen. Following Saint Felix, she spent some time at school in Switzerland and then trained at secretarial college before starting a job at Coutts Bank in London in the international department.

Aged 21, Melody and I went to South Africa with our parents and Melody stayed in Cape Town to work. Here she sadly had a failed marriage and subsequently returned to England in 1982 with her two beloved children. She was incredibly tough and worked amazingly hard devoting her life to bringing up her children. She worked in Cambridge as a PA until, in her mid-forties, she decided to make the brave decision to return to education and took three years out to study for a degree at university in East Anglia. With her degree she became a professional Careers Advisor and worked for 20 years at Cambridgeshire schools helping students choose their career paths. She also worked for the MS Society on the helpline, helping other people with MS, and continued working right up until age 69, only finally retiring last year.

Melody lived in Waterbeach for 33 years and was an active member of the local church – singing in the choir as she had also done at Saint Felix. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and a wonderful aunt and sister.

Melody was always my best friend as well as my sister and as I live in Suffolk I was able to spend much time with her. She never moaned about her illness and was a truly inspirational person, who will be sadly missed by all her many friends and loving family. She was greatly loved and testament to this was the packed church in December with people of all ages and from all walks of life, including many of the students she had helped.

At school she was great friends with Barbara Lawton and Annette Rose but we have lost touch so if anyone knows them please pass on the news.

36 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 ROSEMARY PAYNE (Bird) Somerville 1942-46

My mother arrived at Saint Felix and the cold wind of the North Sea in 1942. Clearly her arrival did not deter any possible German plans for the invasion of the Suffolk Coast, so she and the rest of the school soon decamped to Hinton St George for the rest of the war. There Rosemary helped the War Effort by milking cows with the Land Army.

Christopher Payne

Obituary in the Guardian 5 August 2015 My mother, Rosemary Payne, who has died aged 85, was a physiotherapist who achieved worldwide recognition for her book, “Payne’s Relaxation Techniques”, a bestseller that was published in five languages and is still referred to in NHS relaxation advice booklets.

Most people would be thinking of retiring at 60 or 65, but that is when Rosemary decided to write a comprehensive book for professionals on relaxation techniques. No such book existed. She diligently made herself familiar with an enormous body of scientific literature, and, at the age of 66, she published the first edition. The initial print run exhausted, the book was reprinted and her publishers, Churchill Livingstone, and later, Elsevier, kept asking for new editions. She wrote the fourth edition at the age of 81.

The eldest of five daughters of an industrialist, ship owner and the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Frank Bird, and his wife Edith, Rosemary attended Norfolk House School and Howell’s School in Cardiff, then went away to boarding school at various places in England – her schools were evacuated to different parts of the country during the war – and later Brillantmont School in Switzerland. She came back to Cardiff to retrain as a physiotherapist at Cardiff Royal Infirmary.

Aged 24, she married Captain (later Major) Edwin Rowland-Payne, who had served in the army in Normandy, Palestine, Malaya and Korea.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 37 As an army wife, she lived in Germany and Tobruk, Libya. Once divorced, aged 33, she returned to Cardiff and physiotherapy. When her children left home, she enrolled at the University of Wales in Cardiff and gained a BSc in psychology. In the evenings she ran classes for women with menopausal depression.

With strong convictions and an abiding concern for medical ethics and the dignity and independence of the individual, Rosemary was actively involved in both the Patients Association and the Voluntary Euthanasia Society. She took part in the Greenham Common women’s peace campaign in the 1980s. Much travelled and with a great facility for writing, she was widely published in journals and newspapers on subjects as wide-ranging as tree protection in Cardiff, travel in Burma and car seat design to aid the prevention of back pain. Rosemary was knowledgeable about art, furniture, architecture and geology. She was an accomplished sculptress and a pianist.

Passionately interested in gardening, walking and nature, she was never more content than when walking on a windy mountain or along a wooded path, but most beloved was her garden – a beautiful place in all seasons. She was graceful, warm and sensitive and enormously considerate. The feelings of others were never far from the front of her mind.

PAT THOBURN Centre Cliff & Fawcett 1936-46

Pat Thoburn was quite a star at Saint Felix – highly intelligent, a talented artist, also excelling at singing and lacrosse.

She was 5 years my senior so I never knew her well but her reputation filtered through and we sometimes bumped into each other in the Art Room. She was always friendly and on leaving Saint Felix she went to the Slade School of Art where William Coldstream (my father) was the Director. However, it was Reg Butler, her tutor, who made a great

38 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 impression and she confided that he once asked her to marry him. However, her first loyalty lay with her father and she looked after him for the rest of his life.

Some years ago Shelagh Montague Browne and I went over to an Old Felicians’ tea party at Pat’s beautiful historic house in Kent. We toured the house and then she proudly showed us round her remarkable azalea garden which was Pat’s pride and joy and then we were served a lavish tea.

In August Shelagh and I went to collect Pat for a lunch party. She was sitting on the sofa looking charming, albeit a little frail. After plying us with generous glasses of sherry, she looked up and half smiling asked ‘My dears, would you mind if I came in my gardening clothes?’

Juliet Collings-Wells (née Coldstream) Somerville 1944-50

MARGARET WILLIAMS (Platt) Clough 1940-44

My sister Margaret was the third sister of our family (I was the fourth) to go to Saint Felix. She was to have a very different experience to that of our sisters, Honor and Rosemary, as joining in the summer term of 1940 at Southwold, she was only there for a few weeks when the school closed in May, following the German invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands. 206 girls dispersed while Miss Williamson explored the possibilities of new premises. Within a fortnight, she assembled 206 girls at the spectacular King Arthur’s Castle Hotel, Tintagel, and extended the summer term into August to compensate for the lost time.

Margaret always told me what a glorious hot summer they spent there, with some lessons in huts on the rocks and beach and sleeping on the floor as there were not enough beds.

JANUARY 2018 | OLD FELICIANS | 39 Fortunately, more suitable accommodation was found for the autumn term in Hinton House, Hinton St George near Crewkerne, Somerset, about which much has been written in the book about Saint Felix by Bernard Keeling. I myself was to join her in summer 1944, so remember Hinton well.

Margaret was perhaps the cleverest of the sisters and excelled in English, which she loved. She fell in love with acting, playing Olivia in an open air performance of Twelfth Night played in the Sunk Garden in the summer of 1943. This led to her leaving in the autumn of 1944 before taking her Higher Certificate. She was accepted at the Webber Douglas School of Drama, winning the Silver Medal at the end of the two years there. She then went into Rep, as it was called, where actors were able to hone their skills.

Within a few years she met and married a young Marine Officer, Lawrence Williams, in 1952, after he had served in the Korean War, perhaps ending a budding acting career! However, a colourful and varied life was led as the wife of a serving officer. There were spells in Malta, during the Suez crisis, and Cyprus, at the time of the upheaval of the Greek/Turkish crisis. They made many service friends who were a part of their life for many years.

In 1958, Lawrence’s father died and he made the brave decision to resign his commission and try to save the impoverished estate in Anglesey which he had inherited. He and Margaret were to have a number of very hardworking years building up a very successful caravan park and farming the rest of the land, plus bringing up two daughters, not to mention the succession of beloved dogs. My husband and I spent many happy summer holidays there with our children of the same age.

Margaret threw herself into the life of the island, serving on committees, taking an RHS diploma in gardening and having a social life. The garden became her great love and she was very knowledgeable up to the end of her life.

40 | OLD FELICIANS | JANUARY 2018 Sadly, chronic arthritis set in some years ago, as well as internal problems, which meant she was unable to lead an active life, which frustrated her. She remained deeply interested in her six grand-children’s exploits and could talk on many subjects. A succession of operations finally took their toll and she gave up the long fight in November 2016. The family and I miss her amazing memory of the past, with a fund of stories, and her strong personality.
