What Truck? • The truck the Bartender told you about. Now that I'm inside my secret Study, what now? • There's something in here that you' 11 need later. • It's in the east side of town. • It's pretty hard to find. I found the truck, but now what? • Push the bookcase so that it closes. • You'll need to search the cab. • Pick Up the PAPER in the trashcan. • There are three items you need to find in there. • The first object is the PENCIL on the dash. I can't open the China Cabinet in the Living Room. • There must be something important in there. • The second object is the CIGARETTE BUTIS on the floor. • You need to find a KEY. • Finally, the BLOODY WHISKEY BOTTLE on the • Liz must have hid the key somewhere. seat. • Maybe it's under something. Hey, I got blood on my shirt from the bottle. • Pick up the Plant. • You better find a clean shirt. • Ah, use the KEY in the Cabinet. • You have extra clothes at home. • Pick Up the PISTOL. • Open the drawer in your bedroom. I can't use the bed to go to sleep. • Pick Up the SHIRT. • Do you sleep with the lights on? • Use the SHIRT. • Turn off the lamp next to the bed. I can't seem to do anything else in Town. King concludes that he has yet to find an answer to the "talent versus luck" question, as he felt he was outed as Bachman too early to know. Out of them all I would have to say that the Long Walk was my favourite for its intensity and bitter comprehension. Oct 15, Billy Roper rated it really liked it. I actually like a lot of what Stephen King has written although some of it, like The Gunslinger, seems too hastily written and lengthy. I'm kind of on the fence about these attempts, but will certainly recommend The Long Walk to anyone interested checking out that side of King. May 13, Rebecca McNutt rated it really liked it. To those unfamiliar with Richard Bachman's writing I can say that in my opinion Stephen King created this pseudonym as a no-pressure foray into psychological thrillers, rather than his usual horror genre. My only complaint is that King tries a little too hard with creating the future setting and goes overboard with the names and slogans for things that he uses in his setting. I was satisfied with the read at the end, even though I had a hard time really getting into it.

    ABSTRACT A Dark Mirror: Duality and Reflections in Stephen King's Writers Alexis Hitchcock Director: Dr. Lynne Hinojosa, Ph.D. Stephen King is well known for popular horror fiction but has recently been addressed more thoroughly by literary critics. While most studies focus on horror themes and the relationships between various characters, this thesis explores the importance of the author characters in three works by Stephen King: Misery, The Dark Half, and The Shining. The introduction gives a background of Stephen King as an author of popular horror fiction and discusses two themes that are connected to his author characters: doppelgängers and duality, and the idea of the death of the author. The death of the author is the idea that an author's biography should not affect the interpretation of a text. Implicit in this idea is the notion that the separation of an author from his work makes the text more literary and serious. The second chapter on Misery explores the relationship between the author and the readership or fans and discusses Stephen King’s divide caused by his split between his talent as an author of popular fiction and a desire to be a writer of literary fiction. The third chapter concerning The Dark Half explores Stephen King’s use of the pseudonym Richard Bachman and the splitting this created within himself and the main character of his novel. The last chapter includes discussion of The Shining and the author character’s split in personality caused by alcohol and supernatural sources. Studying the author characters and their doppelgängers reveals the unique stance King takes on the “death of the author” idea and shows how he represents the splitting of the self within his works.

    “We Walk Your Dog at Night!”: An Interview with Stephen King by John C. Tibbetts Stephen King is a phenomenon. He is without question the most popular writer of horror fiction of all time. In l973 he was living with his family in a trailor in Hampden, Maine, struggling to make a living as a high school teacher, when he published his first novel, Carrie, a tale of a girl with telekinetic powers. Its sales in hardcover were modest (l3,000) but enough to inspire a paperback reprint and a popular film adaption by Brian De Palma in l976. His “breakthrough” book, Salem's Lot, came out that year and quickly sold 3,000,000 copies. Within the next four years The Shining, The Stand, Night Shift, and The Dead Zone—all best-selling horror fiction—established King as the reigning Master of the Macabre. When he co- authored The Talisman in l984 with Peter Straub [See the Straub interview elsewhere in these pages], it was a publishing event unparalleled in modern times. Today over l00 million copies of his books are in print. King's work is frankly derivative of the traditions of l9th century gothic horror. Carrie is written in the style of the "epistolary" novel of the late l8th century. Salem's Lot is an update on Bram Stoker's vampire novel, Dracula. Christine is a variant on Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Pet Sematary is a retelling of W. W. Jacobs' "The Monkey's Paw." And The Dark Half draws from the rich vein of "doppelganger" stories by Poe, Hoffmann, and Stevenson.

    STEPHEN KING’S WRITERS: THE CRITICAL POLITICS OF LITERARY QUALITY IN MISERY AND THE DARK HALF MICHAEL J. MEYER This essay explores how King, through his writer protagonists in Misery and The Dark Half, presents several traits shared by all creative artists and attempts to determine the validity of the present criteria used by literary critics in order to establish the differences between “classic” and “pulp” fic- tion. King first pinpoints differences in the writing process, including methodologies employed and language used, but, more importantly, he con- siders the motivation that engenders composition. As he probes the self- concept of a “writer,” King subtly delineates his own personal identity crisis, and, in the process, provides his readers with a deliberate analysis of the dichotomy that exists between writers whose work is considered inter- pretative and therefore classic ... and those who produce stories that are “only” designed to provide entertainment and relaxation rather than to probe vital questions about human actions and motivations. Through the plots of both Misery and The Dark Half, King poses the ambiguous question faced by all writers: whether their concern for the symbiotic relationship with their reading public is great enough to overcome their fear of catering to inferior quality in order to attain a more measurable goal: reader accept- ance and financial success. Stephen King has made it increasingly obvious in his work that he yearns to be considered one of America’s premier writers rather than merely a master of the horror genre. Perhaps motivated by his experiences as a former literature major in college and as a high school English teacher, King indicates his desire by paying lip service to so-called “great” American authors in most of his work, mentioning Poe, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and especially Faulkner directly or through literary allusions.

Trim size is given because Book Club editions are often smaller than trade editions. Also, Book Club edition dust jackets (DJ) are occasionally found on first editions to replace lost or damaged jackets. Book Club edition dust jackets are easily identified because they do not have a price marked inside the front cover. Later printing trade edition dust jackets will often have a different price from what is found in the table.
