ATTENTION AMATEUR GENEALOGISTS

My love of genealogy I subject to close scrutiny Is rooted in my family tree Each family portrait that I see Persistently I follow through Wondering of which family faces The generations, clue by clue, The lineaments of my own bear traces Tracing the threads of ancestry That, interwoven, fashioned me. And when a pictured face you know Be sure to label it and so From spidery script and tattered page, Prevent a fate that most would veto From lichened tombstones worn with age, Travelling the centuries incognito The names and dates, before they fade I seek - these are my tools of trade. The secrets of the past I seek. Could but these dusty records speak A death certificate maybe And tell me all I need to know or birth date from the registry, Of those who penned them long ago A marriage record, frail and bent - Each one a precious document; And many hidden facts I learn But not always the ones I yearn. The press of by-gone years may prove Where is that titled Earl I fancy A veritable treasure trove, And all the money held in chancery ? of faded letters from the past Provide a missing clue at last. The Highland Sergeant six feet tall With bearskin, swinging kilt and all Some find it good to hunt through miles Alas, too often in their place of carded land selection files, The family skeleton shows his face Probate certificates or wills Grinning to see the sins appear which also serve the gaps to fill. That have been buried many a year.

Old shipping lists I oft peruse But what delight when I succeed For names of passengers or crews. In finding every link I need Hoping to find, recorded clear, To follow an unbroken line The ships that brought my people here. Way back to Sixteen forty-nine.

Government gazettes ad infinitum In civilization's early dawn Can furnish many a helpful item: When animals were more feared than man Great Grandpa may even be A sturdy branch or leafy limb Gazetted for insolvency; Was Everyman's ideal home; And lists of shareholders and leases Sometimes include one's predecessors. Such shelters now are infra dig; But thankfully I still can seek old photographs can yield a clue From trials of Nineteen ninety-three But do be sure of 'who is who, - A refuge in my family tree The Grandma I framed with pride Proved to be 'some-one else's' bride. MARIE'S MEMORABILIA

This month Marie begins a new series on Pioneer Women which follows below.

RECORDS OF THE PIONEER WOMEN - 1835 - 1860

PREAMBLE

An original copy of this book is held in the Rare Book Collection, Latrobe Library, State Library of Victoria. The book was published by Osboldson & Co., Pty Ltd, Temple Court Place, Little Collins Street, Melbourne.

On page 393 of the September 1991 issue of the Genealogist, reference was made to a recollections of nineteenth century women. This was contained in the above mentioned book published in 1937 for the State's Centenary. Readers were advised that this was available on microfilm at the State Library of Victoria. I purchased a microfilm copy of this book, mainly because of the dearth of information about our pioneer women. This is now in the Warrnambool AIGS Library.

Most of the many stories are eight or nine lines, some less, others are a lot longer, and all have been submitted by the Pioneer herself or members of her family.

On the following page begins a precis of information in each instance, setting out married name, maiden name, dates of birth and death, and places where individuals settled.

I have found an article written by Emilie Nagorka, half sister of my great grand father Adelburtus (George) Pannowitz.

INTRODUCTION

About 1,300 records were received and put into narrative form by the Historical Committee.

Every effort has been made to preserve the form and language of the originals, as well as the spelling of names of persons, places, and ships, which is obviously the recorder's memory of a spoken word than the present day rendering. the responsibility for all statements, however, rests on the recorder.

It may seem superflous to include records showing only the dates of birth, marriage and death, but the Historical Committee held the conviction that behind the barest facts lay the same qualities of courageous endurance and enterprise as are graphically told in the longer stories.

For easy reference the book contains, as well as the actual records. an alphabetical index, a chronological index, a subject index. and a list of overseas ships in which pioneer women came to Victoria.

Grateful acknowledgement is made of help received from many friends in the preliminary stages of the work.

The book is an attempt to preserve for those who follow a lasting record. Through its every page there runs like a scarlet thread the triumphant story of a courage which endured all things. In the belief that, though all else crumble to dust, the same quality will animate the remotest descendants of the Pioneer women of Victoria, the task is finished.

A May Moss, President, Women's Centenary Council. Page Six
