EDITORIAL

Welcome to the July edition of the South West Genealogist. Now that winter has well and truly set in, I can't think of any better way to spend the days than in a nice heated library doing family research, can you? It always amazes me, though, to see the time disappear so fast when doing research. On a recent trip to Laverton PRO, I ordered up the correspondence and building files for the Mailors Flat State School, hoping to find some pupil registers, pre 2900, but they don't appear to exist anymore. However, the correspondence files are interesting, with numerous letters being sent to regarding such matters as closing the school due to outbreaks of scarlet fever, diptheria, etc; also applications for positions vacant at the school, such as sewing mistress, pupil-teachers, etc. I have reproduced an item of interest on the last page of this newsletter, taken from the correspondence files of Mailors Flat School. The parents at the school wrote complaining about the lack of discipline given to the pupils by their head teacher. We shouldn't assume that all teachers in "the olden days ruled the class with a rod of iron!", which seems to be the general belief these days.

Don't forget to look at the Beattie & Phillips burial records in the Flagstaff Hill library. I was looking for the death date of one of mine, & decided to check out the B & P books before going through the chore of year-by- year through the death fische, and I found him there, with the exact date of death given. I could then go straight to the fische & get the registration number. For ancestors dying in the Warrnambool district, it is well worth a look. This particular fellow of mine was buried in the cemetery, so it is not just Warrnambool burials.

THE AREA ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER

Dear Members and Friends,

Recently we have had some very interesting visitors at the library - in particular one lady from and another from Hobart. You will hear of their news at our meeting.

I am looking forward to holidaying, later this month, with Jack. We will be in Queensland for three weeks enjoying some warmer days.

Good luck with your research. Sincerely,

Marie Boyce,

Area Administrator

HELP WANTED

Does anyone have any information on Heinrich Storm (a German national) who married Catherine Jane Cathcart (a single mother with a 2 year old daughter, Hannah Robina) at Mailors Flat in 1888. Heinrich disappeared after the birth of their son Henry in 1889. Catherine Jane was a daughter of John and Margaret Cathcart nee Owens, who owned the general store at Mailors Flat at the time. Catherine Jane Storm died in Warrnambool in 1916. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of the above families. Replies to Lorraine Smith, 200 Merri, W'bool, 3280.

To the Secretary Education Dept. Melbourne Sir, We are much annoyed in this little township by a bad head teacher under whom our children will never prosper because he has no control over them, they are more master than he is. You may imagine how the school is conducted when the children pin tails to him, throw peas at his head, throw squibs at him in school- time. He also sends them for to gather any paper that is lying about the school ground for to burn and the children put powder into it and when he lights it it nearly blows the face off him. I often watch Pupil-Teacher after dinner taking them into school and generally they run him for about half a mile across the fields. Some of us have to send our children to the Yarpturk school and some to Woodford school which is a great inconvenience, if there were a better master here our children would be saved an unnecessary walk because we are now losing our sewing-mistress and it would be a great boon to the public if you would send us a new master and mistress. I am Sir, Your most obedient servant A Parent
