Now that winter has well and truly set in, I can't think of any better way to spend the days than in a nice heated library doing family research, can you? It always amazes me, though, to see the time disappear so fast when doing research. On a recent trip to Laverton PRO, I ordered up the correspondence and building files for the Mailors Flat State School, hoping to find some pupil registers, pre 2900, but they don't appear to exist anymore. However, the correspondence files are interesting, with numerous letters being sent to Melbourne regarding such matters as closing the school due to outbreaks of scarlet fever, diptheria, etc; also applications for positions vacant at the school, such as sewing mistress, pupil-teachers, etc. I have reproduced an item of interest on the last page of this newsletter, taken from the correspondence files of Mailors Flat School. The parents at the school wrote complaining about the lack of discipline given to the pupils by their head teacher. We shouldn't assume that all teachers in "the olden days ruled the class with a rod of iron!", which seems to be the general belief these days. Don't forget to look at the Beattie & Phillips burial records in the Flagstaff Hill library. I was looking for the death date of one of mine, & decided to check out the B & P books before going through the chore of year-by- year through the death fische, and I found him there, with the exact date of death given. I could then go straight to the fische & get the registration number. For ancestors dying in the Warrnambool district, it is well worth a look. This particular fellow of mine was buried in the Port Campbell cemetery, so it is not just Warrnambool burials. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * THE AREA ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER Dear Members and Friends, Recently we have had some very interesting visitors at the library - in particular one lady from Sydney and another from Hobart. You will hear of their news at our meeting. I am looking forward to holidaying, later this month, with Jack. We will be in Queensland for three weeks enjoying some warmer days. Good luck with your research. Heinrich disappeared after the birth of their son Henry in 1889. Catherine Jane was a daughter of John and Margaret Cathcart nee Owens, who owned the general store at Mailors Flat at the time. Catherine Jane Storm died in Warrnambool in 1916. I would love to hear from anyone with knowledge of the above families. Replies to Lorraine Smith, 200 Merri, W'bool, 3280.
