In Mediaeval Drama, Alexander Manson Kinghorn writes that The separation of the modern from the mediaeval world has made the early English drama remote, and not even 'a willing suspension of disbelief' can change this, for what is lacking is not an act of imagination but a fact of faith in the kind of truth which … moralities sought to present. (128) This argument follows a discussion in which Kinghorn describes Everyman, which he calls “the greatest of the English moralities” (120), as a play entirely unsuited for modern audience. Morality plays became obsolete, argues Kinghorn, because as time went on “they no longer answered the questions which were being asked by educated people” (125). As other forms of medieval English drama, for example the mystery and the miracle play, moralities indeed display many characteristics likely to discourage contemporary viewers. One of them is the utter simplicity of their characters, which are always purely black or white personified abstractions who lack psychological depth, who never evolve throughout the play, and who thus function mostly as wooden “allegorical equations” (Donaldson 367). Other critics indicate the predictability of the plot as the key factor responsible for the obsolescence of morality play, that is, the absence of any plot twists or any unexpected turn of events which would be of interest for contemporary audience. Finally, the overt and unrelenting didacticism of the morality play, often described as “a sermon cast in dramatic form” (Kinghorn 112), contributes to the popular conception of this genre as outdated and unappealing to the modern theatrical taste. Indeed, the original goal of moralities was to teach the mostly illiterate audience about the proper conduct of Christian life in an approachable manner, and as Marion Jones explains in “Early Moral Plays and the Earliest Secular Drama,” allegory in these plays “is used by people who know all the answers, to enlighten those who might otherwise neglect to ask all the questions” (247). The problem is that the perception of theatre as a didactic tool was questioned in the twentieth century, and as a result, a significant number of modern viewers would subscribe to the view espoused by Eugene Ionesco, who perceived “all forms of didactic message in the theatre as a vulgarity” (Ekberg 19). 7 My dissertation has been designed as a response and a challenge to what seems a common academic discard of the morality play as a genre potentially relevant to the modern stage. By examining the largely unexplored phenomenon of the Morality Play Revival, which occurred at the beginning of the twentieth century, I will demonstrate that moralities not only survived in anglophone drama but also proved an adaptable and desired form. In my study, I will both discuss contributions of minor or amateur playwrights (such as Arthur Simmons or George V. Hobart), who often authored only one play or who wrote for performance at schools or parishes, and allude to several writers known from the western literary canon (such as T.S. Eliot or Arthur Conan Doyle), who admitted their indebtedness to the morality play tradition. The works of the latter group will not be analysed in detail, however, since adaptations and appropriations of the morality play are of more interest to this dissertation than such plays as Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral

While critics have often ignored Jonson's Morality heritage, the similarity between his lead cozeners and the Vice is often striking. Face and Mosca's overwhelming love of the theatre manifests itself in their superior ability to create a drama in which their scheming partners and ambitious clients expose the faults to which all humanity is prone. Certainly, as it strives to rule the dramatic world, the Vice forms a precarious bond with the audience. Its Morality traits underscore its evil nature and therefore alienate us from the Vice to some degree. However, this figure could imitate humanity and thus invites the audience into an uncomfortable camaraderie which exposes the spectators' own attraction to greed. The first chapter of my thesis examines many of the Vice's central characteristics, such as his love of masks and his ability to create and sustain anarchy.

    Becoming Youth: Coming of Age in Shakespeare and Marlowe by Rachel Prusko A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Rachel Prusko, 2014 Abstract While studies in Renaissance childhoods, literary and historical, are becoming more prominent, this work has failed to distinguish between children and adolescents, leaving youth, as such, largely unexamined. My project attends not to the children of early modern drama, but to post-pubescent characters in their teen years, and argues that many plays literalize the ‘re-naissance’ of teenagers (‘adolescents’ or ‘youths’ in early modern England), reimagining what it meant to be young during a period when discourses surrounding youth were already clearly, yet crudely, defined. This thesis is a historicized analysis of young characters in several plays: Marlowe’s Edward II, and Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, Henry V, Romeo and Juliet, Pericles, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest. I argue that these plays intervene in the standard definitions so frequently applied to teenagers during the early modern period. The perception, on the one hand, of youthful behavior as violent, reckless, and rash was commonplace: Protestant preachers and moralists of the day insisted that young people were naturally prone to sin, rebelliousness, and unruly behavior, and so required strict regulation. On the other hand, optimistic portrayals of youth abounded as well: the age of youth was associated with hope and beauty as often as it was with folly and sin.

A submission for the degree of doctor of philosophy by Stephen David Collins. The Department of History of The University of York. June, 2016. ABSTRACT. Families transact their relationships in a number of ways. Alongside and in tension with the emotional and practical dealings of family life are factors of an essentially moral nature such as loyalty, gratitude, obedience, and altruism. Morality depends on ideas about how one should behave, so that, for example, deciding whether or not to save a brother's life by going to bed with his judge involves an ethical accountancy drawing on ideas of right and wrong. It is such ideas that are the focus of this study. It seeks to recover some of ethical assumptions which were in circulation in early modern England and which inform the plays of the period. A number of plays which dramatise family relationships are analysed from the imagined perspectives of original audiences whose intellectual and moral worlds are explored through specific dramatic situations. Plays are discussed as far as possible in terms of their language and plots, rather than of character, and the study is eclectic in its use of sources, though drawing largely on the extensive didactic and polemical writing on the family surviving from the period. Three aspects of family relationships are discussed: first, the shifting one between parents and children, second, that between siblings, and, third, one version of marriage, that of the remarriage of the bereaved.

    William Poel EDWARD M. MOORE FT would be difficult to exaggerate the debt that all of Shake­ spearian owe to William Poel. It can easily be argued, as William Archer did, that scenic Shakespeare had reached such extremes by the turn of the last century that a reaction Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/sq/article/23/1/21/5100337 by guest on 29 September 2021 was inevitable, and it is not difficult to find forces alive at the end of the century that would have ended the established vogue even if Poel had never lived and had never formed the Elizabethan Stage Society. It is also true that Poel's direct influence hardly spread beyond London. Nevertheless, the fact remains that it was Poel who first demonstrated that the whole conception behind the current methods of staging Shakespeare was radically wrong, demonstrated this fact not by criticism alone but by what Shaw later referred to as "desperate experiments".1 It is further true that the later producers who did finally overturn spectacular Shakespeare—from Gran- ville-Barker to Bridges-Adams and Nugent Monck—were directly indebted to him. As it turns out, Poel is actually a rather difficult person to come to terms with. Pie was so radically right in the main things he did, and so persevering against the forces of the theater that he opposed, that one hates to have to qualify one's praise. Moreover, he fought virtually single-handedly for the first twenty-five years of his professional career; Shaw's was almost the only im­ portant critical voice raised in his favor, and at the time Shaw's patronage was probably at least as much a handicap as a blessing.
