Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the September Edition of The Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the September edition of the Smoken‘ News. We want to welcome back all the students and faculty from all of our many educational institutions around town. This is always a time of rebirth for me as all this new life arrives. Occasionally, I have been known to stretch my boundaries on the definition of Blues and Soul when I find someone so interesting that I find the music ―close enough‖. So it is with Gary Shane. Gary and I go back over 20 years as friends and inside the music business. We worked together on many blues recordings including some great work with Shirley Lewis. Gary has a new band called Tabasco Fiasco and they sound crazy and off-beat enough to fit right into Smoken‘ Joe‘s. Much more on Gary later in the newsletter but you will love his lyrical stylings and spontaneous approach to music. I‘ll see you there on September 22. Professor Harp has played at Smoken‘ Joe‘s so many times I am tempted to call him one of our own but of course his career spans over 4 decades so I won‘t be that presumptuous. We still love him and he has a brand new CD that will be available when he plays on Saturday, September 10. We have included a review of Professor Harp‘s new CD here in the newsletter. Smoken‘ Joe‘s T-shirts are available once again with more sizes to choose from. They should be in by the second week of September. Summer is almost gone but you can celebrate the end of summer with our 4th and final Special Beer Guide. Ken wraps up his tour of our brews with several delicious bottled beers. October 4th will be the 1 year anniversary Eddie Scheer‘s Tuesday Night Allstars. This has become one of the hottest nights of the week and we now recommend reservations. Really? On a Tuesday night? Well, if anyone knows how to party it is big Ed Scheer and I know this will be a big one. Stay tuned for more info on this during the month. Let me step out of the way now and let you enjoy! Together again for almost a year, this is a true powerhouse band with their exciting blend of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, a little Country, a little Rock, and some zydeco mixed in. The members of the Hubcaps include Mickey Bones (drums, vocals, Cajun accordion), Joe Pete (guitar, vocals), and Brian Rost (bass) and Mike Annis (drums). These are four of the original members of the sensational New Orleans zydeco/rock band The Boogaloo Swamis who are four times Boston Music Award winners. The fifth member of the group is a regular at Smoken‘ Joe‘s, the world travelled and award winning sax and clarinet player, Scott Shetler. Add to this a little burlesque humor and you have one outrageously great night of entertainment. Friday, September 9 at 9PM Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers Put your dancing shoes on! Erin is easily one of our favorite performers here at Smoken‘ Joe‘s. She has been hailed as Boston‘s "authentic blues chanteuse‖; although she is also in the Boston Music Award-winning electro dance band Lovewhip (along with Delta Swingers/Lovewhip co-conspirator Jim Countryman). With her new band Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, Erin and the gang give the music a new twist to create a genre they call ―Charles River Delta Blues‖. The Delta Swingers feature: Jim Countryman on bass; Bob Nisi on drums and vocals; and veteran producer/blues-guy and former Tone Cool label founder, Richard "Rosy" Rosenblatt on harmonica. They‘ve recently been given some great opportunities – opening for blues legend David ―Honeyboy‖ Edwards at House of Blues and being invited to open for Chicago great James Cotton with his "Superharp" Band, this past November at the Regent Theater in Arlington. Saturday, September 10 at 9PM Professor Harp Primarily playing a sparse, yet full-sounding brand of no-nonsense, no-frills Texas style blues, Professor Harp specializes in what he calls, ‗roots music‘."It's whatever makes me feel good and moves me, so to speak." Indeed it has evolved while continuing to move audiences for decades. Professor Harp performed with various bands throughout the Northeast including legends Solomon Burke and Luther 'Guitar Jr.' Johnson and played live on NBC's Today Show. Among the legions of hot performances at rocking blues clubs, the memories that often stand out for The Professor are the nights his harp helped to swell the room, in a spontaneous jam with his old mentor, the inimitable bluesman Muddy Waters. New CD available from Professor Harp! Responding to fan requests, the Professor has recorded some of his favorite songs along with some exciting originals. This fan-pleasing album will be for sale at the show. Be sure to read our full review of this CD later in the Smoken‘ News. Thursday, September 15 at 8:30PM Nate Stringfield’s HouseKwake Nate the great is back for another unforgettable night of great entertainment. Drums, vocals, MC, music arranger, music director, bandleader, and former member of The Stringfield Family Band, Nate Stringfield has done it all. While in Pittsburg, PA, Nathaniel and band members of the Stringfield family took to the road at a very young age, touring with such luminaries as Albert King, the Temptations, Three Dog Night, and many others. Today, Nate gives every minute of every performance his all. He is a supreme entertainer playing everything from John Lennon to Al green but what makes his music so unique are the complex arrangements crafted for each song. Nate likes to say these songs are given the ―Stringfield seasoning.‖ We guarantee that when HouseKwake plays, the house will ―kwake, rattle and roll‖. Friday, September 16 at 9PM The Racky Thomas Band This is the man Eddie Scheer calls the coolest of the cool. He is a master bluesman with few rivals and clearly one of our favorite and most popular artists. While his band hails from Boston, Massachusetts, they play blues as though they came right out of post-war Chicago or the Mississippi delta. This band has received widespread critical praise in local, national, and international blues publications, as well as worldwide radio airplay of their two most recent self-produced CD‘s; Last Of The Big Spenders, and Troubled All the Time. Formed in 1995, the band maintains a steady performance schedule of over 150 dates a year and continues to earn rave reviews from critics and music enthusiasts alike. The band also has a number of festival performances to their credit, and has opened for Luther ‗Guitar‘ Jr. Johnson, Bobby ‗Blue‘ Bland, Paul Rishell & Annie Raines, and Susan Tedeschi. Reservations recommended for this popular show. Saturday, September 17 at 9PM Shirley Lewis She is known as Boston‘s ―Regal Queen of the Blues.‖ One of our favorite performers at Smoken‘ Joe‘s, Shirley Lewis is an award-winning blues artist, member of the Down Home Blues Society and all around legend in the Blues community. Ms. Lewis began her career opening for such artist as BB King and Ike and Tina Turner. For Shirley, singing is like poetry and dance all in one, making people have fun while she is on stage. Shirley always fills the house so be sure to make a reservation early. Thursday, September 22 at 8:30PM Gary Shane and Tabasco Fiasco Gary Shane, the North Shore rocker, burst onto the scene 25 long years ago with several monster hits including ―Shadow World‖ and ―Johnny‘s Coaltrain‖. These songs topped the chart at WBCN-FM for months in the midst of Rock n‘ Rolls‘ hay-day. That was back in the days of skinny ties and power-pop, during the brief era of the so-called new wave, a fabled time when an unsigned, local band could still make it on the strength of a few good tunes and a lot of hustle — even without a marketing plan or a Madison Avenue makeover.

Street Dance is unique in that is doesn’t follow one style, it has a variety of styles within it and enables anyone to take part from as young as age 5. As well as this it increases self-confidence, performance skills, strength and creativity. There are several elements to the Street Dance term and some of these include: Locking Breaking (Bboy/Bgirl) Popping Waacking Waving Vogue Tutting Krumping Street Dance is a fun yet challenging activity which creates opportunities for young people to show their own individual style, be unique and creative through dance. It is so popular that even the more challenging children find it fun and often get involved. This is a great way to release their energy in a positive way. 1. Street Dance Lesson Plans 1.1 General Introduction to Street Dance Regardless of course duration, the workshop leader should begin the first session with a general introduction to the specific session being taught e.g. where it originated and a brief background of the style. For a one-off session, however, this can probably be condensed dramatically so as to get students actively involved as soon as possible. Introduction: At the beginning of the first session, workshop leaders should introduce themselves and explain briefly what the course will involve. Ascertain the class’ basic knowledge and understanding of street dance & hip-hop culture.

  • Social Media Analytics for Youtube Comments: Potential and Limitations1 Mike Thelwall
Social Media Analytics for YouTube Comments: Potential and Limitations1 Mike Thelwall School of Mathematics and Computing, University of Wolverhampton, UK The need to elicit public opinion about predefined topics is widespread in the social sciences, government and business. Traditional survey-based methods are being partly replaced by social media data mining but their potential and limitations are poorly understood. This article investigates this issue by introducing and critically evaluating a systematic social media analytics strategy to gain insights about a topic from YouTube. The results of an investigation into sets of dance style videos show that it is possible to identify plausible patterns of subtopic difference, gender and sentiment. The analysis also points to the generic limitations of social media analytics that derive from their fundamentally exploratory multi-method nature. Keywords: social media analytics; YouTube comments; opinion mining; gender; sentiment; issues Introduction Questionnaires, interviews and focus groups are standard social science and market research methods for eliciting opinions from the public, service users or other specific groups. In industry, mining social media for opinions expressed in public seems to be standard practice with commercial social media analytics software suites that include an eclectic mix of data mining tools (e.g., Fan & Gordon, 2014). Within academia, there is also a drive to generate effective methods to mine the social web (Stieglitz, Dang-Xuan, Bruns, & Neuberger, 2014). From a research methods perspective, there is a need to investigate the generic limitations of new methodological approaches. Many existing social research techniques have been adapted for the web, such as content analysis (Henrich & Holmes, 2011), ethnography (Hine, 2000), surveys (Crick, 2012; Harrison, Wilding, Bowman, Fuller, Nicholls, et al.

  • Analysis of the Global-Local-Global Strategy in K-Pop Music Videos
Analysis of the global-local-global strategy in K-pop music videos Yasmine El Ouahi Hajji Tutor: Núria Vergés Bosch Bachelor’s Degree in International Business Faculty of Economics and Business University of Barcelona ABSTRACT K-pop music videos are a global sensation that are breaking YouTube streaming records since the virality of the hit single ‘Gangnam Style’ by PSY in 2012. After that, South Korean pop music artists and bands such as BTS or BLACKPINK kept dominating international charts and winning the admiration of millions of fans through their music videos. According to academic researchers, this was made possible because of a unique internationalization strategy called global-local-global which consists of the hybridity of cultural product by combining global production factors to a South Korean product with the goal of reaching an international audience by using a foreign distributor channel (YouTube). To understand the characteristics and evolution of this method, K-pop music videos with most YouTube views of each year from 2012 up to 2020 where analyzed. The aspects discussed and their respective evolution throughout the years were the nationality of the K-pop music videos producers, the identification of Korean and foreign elements in the visuals, the use of English in the lyrics, music style, the artists looks and also the use of YouTube digital tools. From the analysis of the music videos, the factors that did help with the popularity of K-pop where the progressive increase of English in the lyrics compared to Korean, the quality camerawork and great scenography together with the use of choreographies and YouTube hashtags and subtitles.

Zboray, Department of Communication ii Copyright © by Carleton S. Gholz 2011 iii “WHERE THE MIX IS PERFECT”: VOICES FROM THE POST-MOTOWN SOUNDSCAPE Carleton S. Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.

  • The Circulation of Popular Dance on Youtube
Social Texts, Social Audiences, Social Worlds: The Circulation of Popular Dance on YouTube Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Alexandra Harlig Graduate Program in Dance The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Harmony Bench, Advisor Katherine Borland Karen Eliot Ryan Skinner Copyrighted by Alexandra Harlig 2019 2 Abstract Since its premiere, YouTube has rapidly emerged as the most important venue shaping popular dance practitioners and consumers, introducing paradigm shifts in the ways dances are learned, practiced, and shared. YouTube is a technological platform, an economic system, and a means of social affiliation and expression. In this dissertation, I contribute to ongoing debates on the social, political, and economic effects of technological change by focusing on the bodily and emotional labor performed and archived on the site in videos, comments sections, and advertisements. In particular I look at comments and fan video as social paratexts which shape dance reception and production through policing genre, citationality, and legitimacy; position studio dance class videos as an Internet screendance genre which entextualizes the pedagogical context through creative documentation; and analyze the use of dance in online advertisements to promote identity-based consumption. Taken together, these inquiries show that YouTube perpetuates and reshapes established modes and genres of production, distribution, and consumption. These phenomena require an analysis that accounts for their multivalence and the ways the texts circulating on YouTube subvert existing categories, binaries, and hierarchies. A cyclical exchange—between perpetuation and innovation, subculture and pop culture, amateur and professional, the subversive and the neoliberal—is what defines YouTube and the investigation I undertake in this dissertation.

  • Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the November Edition of The
Dear Family and Friends, Welcome to the November edition of the Smoken‘ News. We have a wonderful month coming up. Jose Ramos returns this Friday and Saturday Dianna Shonk is holding a Blues Audience party with us to celebrate Ricky ―King‖ Russell. On Friday 11/11/11 Soul Alley returns with guest guitarist Timo Arthur. We love Timo and we‘ll be welcoming him back after a 6 month gig in Shanghai. Also returning this week from world travels is Smoken‘ Joe‘s regular, Bobby Hagen. Do we need more reasons to hold a party? Joe has teamed up with Palm Beer to feature a limited menu Beer Dinner on Wednesday 11/16. Meet Bob Couto from Palm who will host our event. The menu was created by our own James Sklaver who will also be on hand. The festivities begin at 5PM and continue during Alizon‘s duo with Sir Cecil. Due to popular demand we have scheduled Nate Stringfield for the first Thursday of each month into 2012. If you haven‘t heard ―Mr Soul‖ yourself you can catch him this Thursday 11/3. As part of our ongoing series of reflections from our own artists, we have included a feature story this month by Cheryl Arena. She made a reputation in the Boston area for her outstanding voice and harmonica playing. She has since moved to Texas but visits us a couple of times a year. She‘s in town now and dropped in to play last Tuesday night. She will also be highlighting Alizon‘s Wednesday night on 11/2, and she‘ll be returning with her band next month.

I. Circonstances historiques 1492: Christophe Colomb découvre l’Amérique.
