It Is Now a Number of Years Since the Bowman Sculpture Gallery Has Held
It is now a number of years since the Bowman Sculpture Gallery has held an exhibition solely focused on The New School of British Sculpture and it is a pleasure to see the Gallery again showing extensive examples of the leading artists involved. The New British School, also referred to as the New Sculpture, followed a period when the Neo Classicism of such sculptors as Canova, Thorvaldsen and Gibson was regarded as the acme of their art and they featured in many of the great Houses of the time. Towards the end of the 19th Century the expanding middle class, who had a growing interest in the Arts, created a demand for smaller and more domestic sculpture began. At the same time painters such as Lord Leighton, who sculpted Athlete Wrestling with a Python and The Sluggard, and George Frederick Watts, who produced the great monument Physical Energy, were bringing ‘colour’ into the subject by varied patination and their treatment of shape. This movement was undoubtedly fuelled by a reaction against what was seen to be the severity of the Neo Classicists but the principal initiators of this ‘New’, most attractive and impressive period of British Sculpture, were Jules Dalou who taught at The South Kensington School of Art, for eight years from 1871, his friend Édouard Lantéri, who taught at The National Art Training College (later renamed The Royal College of Art) and Alfred Stevens. The result was, as one critic has said, ‘a perfect synthesis of the spiritual and the sensual’. This approach to the subject was adopted by the ‘New’ sculptors. -
Upper Riccarton Cemetery 2007 1
St Peter’s, Upper Riccarton, is the graveyard of owners and trainers of the great horses of the racing and trotting worlds. People buried here have been in charge of horses which have won the A. J. C. Derby, the V.R.C. Derby, the Oaks, Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate, Auckland Cup (both codes), New Zealand Cup (both codes) and Wellington Cup. Area 1 Row A Robert John Witty. Robert John Witty (‘Peter’ to his friends) was born in Nelson in 1913 and attended Christchurch Boys’ High School, College House and Canterbury College. Ordained priest in 1940, he was Vicar of New Brighton, St. Luke’s and Lyttelton. He reached the position of Archdeacon. Director of the British Sailors’ Society from 1945 till his death, he was, in 1976, awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his work with seamen. Unofficial exorcist of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch, Witty did not look for customers; rather they found him. He said of one Catholic lady: “Her priest put her on to me; they have a habit of doing that”. Problems included poltergeists, shuffling sounds, knockings, tapping, steps tramping up and down stairways and corridors, pictures turning to face the wall, cold patches of air and draughts. Witty heard the ringing of Victorian bells - which no longer existed - in the hallway of St. Luke’s vicarage. He thought that the bells were rung by the shade of the Rev. Arthur Lingard who came home to die at the vicarage then occupied by his parents, Eleanor and Archdeacon Edward Atherton Lingard. In fact, Arthur was moved to Miss Stronach’s private hospital where he died on 23 December 1899. -

Tod:1y the name of Charles Kidson is not as well known as it was a century ago. His works are held by only one public gallery. Outside of his family there are just two works by which to measure him as a public sculptor. Despite this, Kidson was unquestionably a fixce in three-dimensional art in Canterbury early last century. 0 When he arrived in Christchurch, aged just 24 years, he had ::::; hopes and aspirations of making his mark as a painter and although he developed a credible facility for handling paint, it was really not his medium. -

The Theatre Royal, including all of that part of the building south of the proscenium arch but excluding the new part of the building on the eastern side of the seismic wall, has high historical and social significance as an important performance venue in Christchurch for more than a century. The alterations to the building and its changes of use reflect the changing nature and fortunes of entertainment in the city over the last hundred years. The theatre was built for a syndicate headed by theatre impresario J. C. Williamson, and opened on 25 February 1908. The size of the building, originally seating 1,240, suggests the popularity of theatre at the time. The building is the third in Gloucester Street to carry the name. Williamson was an American who settled in Australia, founding his company in 1879; many of the better productions which toured Australasia from the late nineteenth until the mid-twentieth centuries travelled were through Williamson. -
