Municipal officials have received reports of door-to-door sales representatives in the Stayner area posing as Township staff as an attempt to enter private residences. The reports have indicated that the sales representatives are asking questions about water quality, water heaters, air conditioners, and furnaces. If a Township representative needs to visit a residence or business, it will usually be at a mutually agreed upon appointment time. Township employees carry appropriate identification and will generally arrive in Township marked vehicles. Residents are under no obligation to let sales representatives into their homes.

  • A Model of Transboundary Cooperation
11 The Great Lakes: A Model of Transboundary Cooperation JAMIE LINTON AND NOAH HALL ! e Canadian wilderness was white with snow. From Lake Superior northward the evergreen trees wore hoods and coats of white. A heavy blanket of cloud hung low across the hills. ! ere was no sound. Nothing moved ... So begins Holling Clancy Holling’s classic children’s book, Paddle to the Sea, which describes the voyage of a small carved canoe, beginning on a river enter- ing Lake Superior and travelling through each of the five Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River and eventually to the Atlantic Ocean ( Holling 1941 ). The book, written and illustrated by an American, was first published in 1941 and remains in print. A film of the same title based on Holling’s book was produced by the National Film Board of Canada in 1966 and directed by the famous Canadian naturalist and author, Bill Mason. Paddle to the Sea is a fitting introduction to this chapter: the book and the film have educated generations of children on both sides of the border about the physical, economic, and cultural dimensions of a distinct place known as the Great Lakes. Like the Great Lakes, Paddle to the Sea is both Canadian and American, and has helped to produce a unique history and culture. The unfolding of that history, in turn, has influenced the Great Lakes, contributing to a process where nature and society have evolved in relation to one another ( Linton 2010 , 24–44). In this respect, this chapter is different from the others in Part II of this volume: rather than seeing it as a “flashpoint,” we see the Great Lakes as a transboundary success story.

  • BASIA BULAT ! ! Official Website | Facebook! | Twitter ! ! ‘Good Advice’ Is the Fourth Album by Songwriter Basia Bulat
! BASIA BULAT ! ! Official Website | Facebook! | Twitter ! ! ‘Good Advice’ is the fourth album by songwriter Basia Bulat. With an electrifying voice, lyrics like sil- ver arrowheads, she has become one of Canada's most conspicuous talents. Since releasing her debut in 2007, Bulat has shared a stage with artists including Arcade Fire, The National, Nick Cave, Daniel Lanois, St Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Beirut, Destroyer, Tune-Yards, Sondre Lerche, The Tallest Man On Earth, The Head and the Heart, Owen Pallett, Andrew Bird and Devotchka. She often appears solo in gigantic halls, winning over crowds with an autoharp or charango, stomping feet, two mighty lungs. But her massive talent has also been recognized at scale: her songs have been adapted for major perfor- mances with symphony orchestras, and she's been tapped for prestigious tributes to Leonard Cohen and The Band.! Bulat was born in Toronto, raised by Polish immigrant parents. She grew up listening to her mother's piano students, to Sam Cooke and Stax on the oldies station, later falling in love with Odetta, Stevie Nicks, Sandy Denny and Abner Jay. Although she emerged as part of Ontario's indie folk scene, be- friending members of Ohbijou, Timber Timbre and Great Lake Swimmers, her first three records were recorded in Montreal. The first two, 2007's Oh My Darling and 2010's Heart Of My Own, were made with producer Howard Bilerman, an engineer who was then better known for noisy punk-rock albums, while 2013's Juno- and Polaris-nominated Tall Tall Shadow was produced with Mark Lawson (The Uni- corns, Akron/Family) and Arcade! Fire's Tim Kingsbury.

  • 2009 Polaris Music Prize Long List Announced Today
2009 Polaris Music Prize Long List announced today. For Immediate release Toronto, ON (June 15, 2009) The Polaris Music Prize Long List was revealed today by Steve Jordan, Prize Founder and Executive Director. This is the fourth year of the $20,000 Prize which is awarded to the best full-length Canadian album, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. This marks the second year Polaris has made the Long List public. The Long List consists of the top 40 full- length Canadian records released from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009, according to an initial vote by the 181 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury. The jury consists of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada. No music industry personnel with direct financial relationships with artists vote for Polaris. “In just one year the Long List has become another integral tool for the Polaris mission of exposing great records to Canadian music lovers. Certainly this year’s list challenges the notion that quantity and quality are mutually exclusive,” said Jordan. Jordan also announced that the Long List is being presented by the Canada Council for the Arts. The Head of the Council’s Music Section, Russell Kelley, said, "the Polaris Prize is given to the best album of the year based solely on artistic merit. The Canada Council has a long history of funding projects based on artistic merit. This is a good very fit. We are pleased and proud to support this year's Long List." Jordan also announced a contest with Exclaim.ca where fans can offer their predictions on which of the 40 Long List titles will make the Short List.
