To demonstrate the particular impact of these perceptions in Japan, the authors compare them with those in the United States, a country where many more children are born outside wedlock.

Persons or Things? Fetal Liminality in Japan's History Victoria Philibert April 29th, 2016 for submission to CAPI PERSONS OR THINGS? FETAL LIMINALITY IN JAPAN'S HISTORY PHILIBERT, 1 Persons or Things? Fetal Liminality in Japan's History Victoria Philibert* ● [email protected] University of Victoria ABSTRACT As a prenatal human between baby and embryo, the fetus is necessarily an in-between entity whose human status can be called into question. In the West, this liminality informs debates surrounding the ethics and law of abortion, the politics of reproduction, and the development of feminist and maternalist ideologies. This paper examines the genealogy of the fetus in the Japanese context to elucidate how this liminality has been negotiated in both spiritual and secular dimensions. It proceeds through an comparative analysis of the fetus' place in the Shinto and Buddhist traditions in Japan, and briefly examines how these origins are made manifest in contemporary rituals of mizuko kuyō 水子供養 (fetus memorial services) and the use of hanayomenuigyō 花嫁繍業 (bride dolls). The paper then examines the changing culture of infanticide in the Edo to Meiji periods, how this shift precipitates new developments in the modern era of Japan, and argues that current paradigms of investigation exclude nuance or holistic understandings of maternity as valid contributions to fetal topologies. Keywords: natalism; fetus; Japan; Barbara Johnson; abortion; maternity; mizuko kuyō; fetus memorial services; hanayomenuigyō; bride-dolls; infanticide, initiation rituals, mabiki; infanticide The fetus is a liminal being, one that is treated as both object and subject by human beings depending on the context. This ambiguity of the fetus is stationed as the cornerstone of persistent debates from the political to the sacred.

Discrimination in the field of Reproductive and Sexual Rights in Japan Shadow Report July 2008 This Shadow Report about Discrimination in the field of Reproductive and Sexual Rights in Japan was written by Sumie Asatori and Fumi Suzuki, directors of the NGO ―SPACE ALLIES‖ The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) 44th Session, July 20 – August 7, 2009 - 1 - Dear Committee members, As one of the States parties to the Convention, Japan presented a periodic report on September 18, 2008 (CEDAW/C/JPN/6) to fulfill its obligations under Article 18 of the Convention. The report will be considered during the 44th CEDAW session in July 2009. This Shadow Report is an attempt to describe discrimination in the field of Reproductive Sexual Rights in Japan, especially regarding the criminalization of abortion, defects in the legal system regarding sexual assault, and insufficient policies for sexual minority women, with the goal of assisting the Committee‘s evaluation of Japan‘s compliance with CEDAW provisions and ultimately improving Japanese women‘s lives. This Shadow Report is intended to complement the periodic report submitted by the Japanese government. Our aim is to provide specific information regarding the legal situation faced by women in Japan. We would especially like to highlight the points below, focusing on discrimination in the field of Reproductive and Sexual Rights in Japan, with particular attention to abortion, sexual assault, and discrimination against sexual minorities. Space Allies, an independent nongovernmental organization, has worked extensively with government initiatives to amend laws to guarantee women‘s reproductive sexual rights and to protect the rights of survivors of sexual assault as well as sexual minority women.

Abortions amongst Asian Women in New Zealand: What Do We Know? Lien Thi Thuy Trinh A thesis submitted for the degree of Masters of Public Health at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand 26th September 2012 Dedication To millions of unborn children. To all the women who have to make heart-aching decisions at some point in their lives. To the late Associate Professor Oliver Davidson who left us before his time. i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The aim of this thesis is to identify the current situation and underlying factors related to abortion among Asian women in New Zealand. The thesis’s objectives are to investigate the current abortion situation among Asian women in New Zealand (number, rate, ratio, demographics) and to identify underlying factors in relation with abortion among Asian women in New Zealand. It consists of two components: i) An epidemiological study of abortion trends and patterns among Asian women in New Zealand analysing the routine abortion data during the period between 2002 and 2008 (both published and unpublished) provided by the Statistics New Zealand; and ii) A cross-sectional study of 188 self-identified Asian women who presented for abortion at four selected abortion clinics in New Zealand. Results from the routine abortion data showed that Asian women had the highest abortion rates and ratios between 2002 and 2008 in comparison with women of other ethnic groups. Abortions among Asian women in their 20s accounted for more than half of the total abortion number for the period of 2002-2008. Asian women obtaining abortions were getting older over time.

Correlates of Modern Contraception Usage in Russia Jamie L. Trevitt, PhD The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health [email protected] Nan Astone, PhD The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health [email protected] Michelle J. Hindin, PhD The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health [email protected] Data Acknowledgement: Data for this study comes from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey Phase 2, funded by the USAID and NIH (R01-HD38700), Higher School of Economics and Pension Fund of Russia, and provided by the Carolina Population Center and Russian Institute of Sociology. 1 ABSTRACT Low contraceptive prevalence in Russia is due in part to access, supply, and cost issues, however, the Soviet legacy of “abortion culture” has also played a major role. It is unclear if some women use abortion as a form of birth control rather than as a last resort. This paper expands on the limited literature regarding contraception in the Russian Federation by exploring correlates of modern contraception usage including the number of previous abortions a woman has had. This study employs data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey and is based on a sample of 4,612 fecund women with a total of 14,849 woman-year observations between 1996 and 2003. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression results are reported for both a random effects and a fixed effects model. Based on the results from the random effects model, the relationship between number of previous abortions and modern contraceptive usage is not uniform. Women who have had one to three abortions have higher odds of using a modern form of contraception than women who have never had an abortion and women who have had four or more abortions.

  • Discrepancies of Abortion Methods and Values Between Japan and the World Kumi Tsukahara*
Journal of Philosophy of Life Vol.4, No.4 (December 2014):99-120 [Special Report] Discrepancies of Abortion Methods and Values Between Japan and the World Kumi Tsukahara* Abstract In this paper, the discrepancy in abortion methods between Japan and overseas and the discrepancy in attitude toward abortion between CEDAW and Japan were considered. Today, the global standard for first-trimester abortion is the use of MA and VA without the help of GA. However, in Japan, the ‘obsolete’ D&C and un-recommended GA remain used for early abortion, whereas neither MA nor VA has seen full adoption. This lagging of abortion technology is due to several reasons: the customary use of current methods, doctors’ lack of concern and desire to maintain an advantageous status quo, the stigmatization of abortion, ‘apathy and disdain’ toward women and a lack of correct information, which this paper attempts to mitigate. The MHLW’s suspicious notice and the Japanese government’s reluctance to improve women’s condition due to ‘fetus over women’ ideology demand more examination. We should turn our eyes to the real suffering of Japanese women and the possibility for MA to save them from agony. Women’s reproductive health and rights are human rights that are their natural rights. We should then find a way to realize this pledge in Japanese society. 1. Introduction On October 23, 1971, at the Symposium on Clinic and Office Abortion Procedures held in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, “the reign of the Dilatation & Curettage (D&C) over early abortion 1 had finally come to an end”.

INTRODUCTION For the first time in history, Japanese women can legally buy birth control pills ("the Pill") for contraceptive purposes.' The Pill was offered on the market to the Japanese public beginning in September 1999, thus culminating a nine-year battle by Japanese pharmaceutical companies to gain approval from the Japanese government for the sale of the "low-dose" contraceptive? In June 1999, the manufacturers of oral contraceptives finally received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare ("MHW") for sale of the Pill by prescription.' The approval process through this nine-year period is best described as a slow moving train which gained unexpected speed as it neared its destination, fueled by an unexpected source.
