Ken Ferguson, 1998 £45 No.54 of 100 copies, signed by artist & priinter; 4to., pp.(26); 13 full-page & vignette white-line wood-engravings printed in brown on heavy Lana Royal Crown paper; text in 14pt Bodoni bold with initials & titling in blue; designed, printed & bound by Ken Ferguson; a very good copy in cloth-backed fancy paper printed boards; ex libris Alan Anderson. 3 APULEIUS. Cupid & Psyche. Translated into English by J.H. Mason from the original Latin... Woodcuts by Vivien Gribble. Privately Printed by J.H. Mason, 1928/35 £220 Sm.folio, no.89 of 'about 130 copies'; pp.(2)41(4); 12 woodcut illustrations by Gribble; beautifully printed on heavy Batchelor's oak-leaf & acorn watermarked paper; a very good uncut copy in original marbled cloth, paper label; John Mason's essay on his father, 'J.H. Mason, The Imprint and the Cranach Press', from N.S.A.E. Journal, laid in. Mason's long colophon records the book's complex gestation, delayed by his work at the Central School and Cranach Press. 'Later he was further hindered by cataract in both eyes and loss of sight... Intended as an example of book printing for the love of the work, for the printer and his friends', only c40 copies were bound up and distributed on publication. The remaining 90 resurfaced in sheets in the 1950s and were bound up in various styles. A fine example of Gribble's very individual style; 'of uncompromisingly strong black line...with the same quality of frozen action of figures on a Greek vase, which gives them a certain tension.' Engraved in 1916, this work should have launched her artistic career, but by the time it appeared at the Arts & Crafts Society exhibition of Nov.1935, Vivien Gribble had succumbed to cancer. Heinemann, 1978 £15 First Trade Edition, folio, pp.(8)48; frontispiece & many illustrations in line throughout; very good in pictorial dust-wrapper. Prinitng Historical Society, 2013. £30 Second Edition, 600 copies printed; 4to., pp.xxii,46; 15 plates of pages from Whittingham's Basle Roman, Kelmscott, Ashendene, Eragny, &c., to the Cranach Gothic; new in green cloth, gilt. 'A valuable addition to the literature of the subject; incidentally it was also an effective piece of propaganda, since many more items have since found their way into our possession.' Crutchley p.24. One of the most desirable and more expensive books in the series now available as a high-quality reprint with excellent new 10pp. introduction by David McKitterick. 6 BASKERVILLE. BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER... together with the Psalter.... Printed by J. Baskerville, Cambridge, 1762 [bound with] The Whole Book of Psalms, Collected into English Metre, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, and Others... Printed by J. Baskerville, Birmingham, 1762. £235 Two works bound together, 12mo., pp.(396); (122); one leaf torn & repaired without loss, one gathering partially sprung, some light browning and a few corners creased but generally well preserved in contemporary crimson morocco, gilt, with central panel & fleuron ornaments; upper hinge repaired, extremities a little rubbed but sound & attractive. Baskerville's only 12mo. Prayer Book, printed with the agreement of Cambridge University; the Sternhold Psalms was printed at Birmingham in the same year, presumably to accompany the BCP. More often found with Brady & Tate's Psalms which Baskerville also printed in 1762. Gaskell 20 (title in second state with price increased to 'Five Shillings, unbound.') & 21. 7 BAWDEN, Edward. Merivale Editions, 1988 £45 FIRST EDITION, 500 copies printed, designed by Sebastan Carter; pp.(16); 15 full- and half-page illustrations of copper engravings produced by Bawden, 'principally for his friends', 1927-29. This pamphlet/prospectus was issued by Peter Sampson who published an edition of 40 copies of the series to celebrate E.B.'s 85th birthday. Extremely scarce, it seems likely that relatively few were ever distributed. 8 BAWDEN, Edward. YORKE, Dr Malcolm. The Inward Laugh. Edward Bawden and his circle. (345 x 245mm), pp.292; over 300 illustrations in colour, line & from photographs including many tip-ins; bound in Bawden-designed patterned paper boards. Yorke explores Bawden's career through his social and artistic friendships with illustrations from many sources including much previously unpublished material, reflecting his work for the Curwen Press, book illustration, advertising, transport posters, murals on ships, churches, boardrooms and colleges, editioned prints, wallpapers and personal watercolours. George Braziller, New York, 1964. £75 FIRST EDITION, deluxe limited edition signed by author & artist and additionally inscribed at end 'for Mary from Ben'; landscape format, pp.(34); illustrations in line & monotone, tipped-in colour lithograph colour plate & lettering throughout by Shahn; a fine production on heavy hand-made Fabriano paper of this response to the assassination of President Kennedy; very good in original printed canvas, black linen slip-case with printed paper label & original card mailing box which is inscribed 'For Mary' by Ben Shahn.
