Constitution of the Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at North Carolina State University Article I—Name and Purpose Article II Constitution of the Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at North Carolina State University Adopted: 12 April 2015 North Carolina State University Colony Article I—Name and Purpose Section 1: The name of the Fraternity shall be the Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at North Carolina State University. Section 2: Its objects shall be the same as those set in the Constitution of Beta Theta Pi especially as applied to the Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at North Carolina State University under which this chapter operates. It is this chapter’s objective to cultivate the development of principled men, according to the standards of Beta Theta Pi, and to uphold the highest standards of the Greek community at North Carolina State University. Article II—Laws Section 1: This Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi shall be governed by the Constitution and Laws of Beta Theta Pi, a fraternity association organized as a non-profit corporation under the laws of the state of North Carolina, and such Constitution and Laws as this chapter shall adopt from time to time. Section 2: This colony of Beta Theta Pi shall comply at all times with federal, state and local law, the policies of North Carolina State University, regulations established by the Interfraternity Council of North Carolina State University, and the Code of Beta Theta Pi. Article III—Membership Section 1: Membership shall be conferred only upon male students of North Carolina State University who have met the qualifications set out in Article II in the Code of Beta Theta Pi and Article I Sections 1 through 4 of the Bylaws of the North Carolina State University Chapter. Section 2: Responsibilities and Duties All members of Beta Theta Pi have to following responsibilities and duties as members of the fraternity: 1. Obey the Constitution, bylaws and rules of Beta Theta Pi. 2. Follow all federal, state and local laws as well as the policies that govern North Carolina State University. 3. Meet all financial obligations to the Fraternity in a timely manner. 4. Participate in the fraternity experience by attending events and remaining in good standing as outlined in Article III Sections 1 through 3 of the Bylaws. Section 3: Privileges Members that have fulfilled all responsibilities and duties are entitled to the following privileges. 1. Have one (1) vote in all chapter-wide decisions. 2. Participate in all fraternity activities. Article IV—Business of the Fraternity Section 1: The Eta Rho Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at North Carolina State University will hold a weekly colony meeting at a regular time and location to conduct its business. This time and location shall be set by the final week of the preceding term. Section 2: Special meetings may be called according to the bylaws of this chapter. Section 3: A quorum shall consist of two-thirds of members in good standing for the transaction of all business at any regular or special colony meeting. Section 4: Robert's Rules of Order shall govern all meetings. Section 5: All meetings are private. The colony may open meetings to the public by a majority vote. Section 6: Fraternity business falls under eight (8) general operating areas: 1. Brotherhood 2. Programming 3. Recruitment 4. Education 5. Outreach 6. Risk Management 7. Finance 8. Communications Section 7: The colony will conduct business in each operational area based on the requirements outlined by the General Fraternity and North Carolina State University. Article V—Leadership Section 1: An Executive Committee of nine (9) members will serve as leaders and officers. These members are responsible for all operational activities and facilitate the development of a positive colony culture congruent with the values of Beta Theta Pi. Section 2: The purpose of the Executive Committee is to: 1. Facilitate the strategic vision and sustainable operation of the colony. 2. Control financial assets. 3. Report at stated times and intervals on the condition of the colony. 4. Prepare business resulting in orderly and succinct meetings. 5. Determine policy in advance for approval at colony meetings. 6. Provide in all other ways possible for the business-like administration of chapter affairs and policies. 7. Fairly and equally represent the brotherhood in all possible manners. Section 3: The Executive Committee will consist of the following officers: 1. President 2. Vice President - Brotherhood 3. Vice President - Programming 4. Vice President - Recruitment 5. Vice President - Education 6. Vice President - Outreach 7. Vice President - Risk Management 8. Vice President - Finance 9. Vice President - Communications Section 4: The Executive Committee will meet weekly outside of the regular colony meeting to conduct business. Executive Committee meetings are limited to executive board members, and advisors, although a limited number of colony members may be invited- as determined by vote of the executive committee. Section 5: All findings and proceedings of the committee shall be reported to the chapter and advisors. Section 6: Each Executive Committee member is responsible for all business related to the corresponding operational area. The President is responsible for the operation of the Executive Committee. Specific duties for each Executive Committee members are outlined in Article V Section 2 of the Bylaws. Section 7: The Chapter may vote upon additional officer positions. Section 8: Executive Committee members will be selected in accordance with the bylaws as outlined in Article II. Article VI—Committees Section 1: Standing Committees The Chapter will maintain the following standing committees to conduct business: 1. Executive Committee 2. Brotherhood Committee 3. Programming Committee 4. Recruitment Committee 5. Education Committee 6. Outreach Committee 7. Risk Management Committee 8. Finance Committee 9. Communications Committee Section 2: Special committees may be created by the Executive Committee or vote of the colony at any colony meeting, its terms to be fixed by the appointed authority. The terms, appointed members, and purpose of the special committee must be presented at the colony meeting before the committee takes effect. Section 3: A member of the Executive Committee must chair all committees. The chair will preside over all meetings of the committee and is responsible for keeping minutes of the meeting. Article VII—Amendments to the Constitution Section 1: This constitution may be amended at any regular meeting of the chapter by a three-fourths vote of the active members of the chapter present and voting. Section 2: Notice of any proposed amendment shall been given at least one week in advance of calling a vote on said amendment. Section 3: Any amendment must be consistent with the Constitution and Bylaws of Beta Theta Pi, North Carolina State University policy and all applicable local, state and federal laws. The Bylaws of the North Carolina State University Colony of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Article I: Membership Section 1: Member Expectations (All Membership Statuses) As brothers of Beta Theta Pi, we expect each member to hold themselves to a high standard. Our brotherhood aids the individual, builds the fraternity, and strengthens the host academic institution through lifelong devotion to intellectual excellence, high standards of moral conduct, and responsible citizenship. Expectations of membership for brothers of Beta Theta Pi are all of the following, but not limited to: A. Intellectual Growth a. Maintain a cumulative GPA at or above a 3.0. b. Attend at least one academic or personal development seminar outside of Beta Theta Pi annually. c. Take an active role in at least one other student organization and pursue officer positions in those organizations when possible. d. Uphold the highest ethics and integrity in academic work. Cheating, plagiarism and academic dishonesty of any kind are not tolerated. B. Responsible Conduct a. Each member is to role model positive behavior and conduct becoming of a Beta when interacting with all internal and external parties of the fraternity. b. Conduct of each member will be in accordance with all policies set forth by North Carolina State University, the Beta Theta Pi Risk Management Policy, and all local, state, and federal laws. c. Members are expected to exhibit behavior that demonstrates they can contribute to a safe and responsible social atmosphere. d. Any member consuming alcohol at fraternity functions must be of legal age (as determined by federal law) e. Fighting is not tolerated and any disagreements between brothers must be handled in an orderly fashion. f. Each member is responsible for his guests when attending a social function, athletic event, or Beta Theta Pi sponsored event of any kind. g. Hazing (as defined in the Risk Management policy of Beta Theta Pi) will not be tolerated. C. Mutual Assistance a. Each member is required to complete at least 12 hours of volunteer community service per term. b. All Chapter-sponsored volunteer service and philanthropic events require mandatory participation from all members. D. Trust a. Attend all ritual ceremonies and events. b. Members should make every possible effort to attend all chapter events. If a member must miss a colony event, it is their responsibility to contact the executive officer in charge of the event ahead of time. c. All members will serve as a mentor for newly educated members both during and after the pledge period. E. Integrity a. All payments, dues, and outstanding balances must be paid by the dates outlined by the advisory team, Vice President of Finance, and the General Fraternity. b. Alcohol may not be present during any event, discussion, or interaction with potential new members.. F. All Members are expected to adhere to the Attendance Policy of this chapter. Section 2: New Members A. Members that have accepted a bid to join Beta Theta Pi but have not yet fully initiated as brothers will be considered new members.

    April, 2020 The Scoop To the Men of the Delta Rho Upsilon Alumni Association: It has been some time since I have written to you and for that I apologize. Not that there has not been plenty to report. For all of us, the world has dramatically changed over the last few weeks. But for the Fraternity, the world changed back in 2018. Inside this issue: To bring you up to date as to what has been going on, I must first go back to Homecoming 2018. An incident occurred just before Treasurer Report 3 Homecoming (the details of which are somewhat immaterial now). As result of this incident, the University gave the Active Body Alumni Updates 3-5 three options: disband, join up with a National fraternity or work with the University to totally reorganize the organization. At that Housefather 6 point, the Alumni Association stepped in and offered a fourth al- ternative: the Alumni Association would become the “National” for Active Update 7 the Active Body. The University agreed to allow the Alumni Asso- ciation to work with the University toward that end. Since that Alumni Notes 7-8 time the Alumni Association has worked toward that goal. Alumni Dues Update 9 It started by representatives from the Alumni Association meeting with University representatives on a regular basis, mostly weekly Mentorship 9 at 8 a.m. Thursday mornings, to learn what the University would expect from the Alumni Association to accept this responsibility.     Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of South Carolina Chartered in 1926 Phi Beta Kappa is the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate honor society. It is recognized across all academic disciplines as a mark of excellence and academic distinction. It is a symbol of integrity and scholarly achievement in the liberal arts and sciences Phi Beta Kappa is both the oldest and the most prestigious undergraduate honor society in the country. Only 10 percent of colleges in the United States have earned the right to have chapters, and just over 1 percent of all college students are elected each year. To be elected, a student must have more than a high grade point average. Chapter members review the academic records of the top 10 percent of the class to ensure that most credits are earned in the liberal arts and sciences, in a broad array of subjects, and at an advanced level. History of Phi Beta Kappa • Phi Beta Kappa are initial letters of Greek words meaning “Love of Wisdom–the Helmsman of Life” • Founded in 1776 at William and Mary College • Yale Chapter established in 1780, Harvard 1781, Dartmouth 1787 • Secrecy repealed in 1830 • Membership extended to women in 1875 • National Body established in 1883 • First African American member elected in 1877 • Alpha of South Carolina established at USC in 1926 • Today, there are 290 chapters and nearly 50 alumni associations across the country • In South Carolina, there are also chapters at Wofford, Clemson and Furman, and there is also the Lowcountry Association Why strive to be elected? There are a number of meaningful and worthwhile honor societies on campus that students will receive invitations to join during their college careers.
