Using Drama-Based Research and Practice to Understand Intimate Partner Violence With Using drama-based research and practice to understand intimate partner violence with young people in Samoa: Exploring an intersectionality informed approach to health promotion Emma Heard Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Social Sciences Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 Faculty of Medicine School of Public Health Abstract Young people around the world report high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and are at a critical life stage for building the foundations for intimate relationships free from violence later in life. Working with young people in culturally diverse contexts to understand their perceptions of and experiences within intimate relationships is an important step for IPV prevention globally. In Samoa, the Pacific Island nation where this study is located, 47.5% of young women (aged 15-24 years) report experiencing physical and/or sexual IPV. Social norms and cultural taboos leave young people in Samoa largely alienated from sexual and relationship health promotion. There is an immediate need to better understand the root causes of violence with this at-risk group to inform meaningful intervention that can halt violence, and to work with young people to establish safe and fulfilling intimate relationships free from violence now and into the future. This thesis presents findings from a participatory study conducted with young people in Apia, Samoa’s urban centre. The study was conducted over three phases. The first phase engaged 15 young people in an interactive drama workshop to gain in-depth understandings of their perceptions, conceptualisations and challenges within intimate relationships. The second phase worked with a smaller group of five young people to translate the initial outcomes from Phase 1 into a performance script. In the final phase, this script was presented to a broader group of approximately 50 young people as an interactive production aimed at providing opportunities for critical reflection and dialogue around current challenges within intimate relationships and possible ways forward. The data collected throughout the three phases of the study included: photographs and audio- visual material to capture embodied knowledge and exploration and transcriptions of focus group discussions after the first and final phases. Intersectionality informed approaches i guided the data collection and analysis, drawing out key intersections between individuals’ multiple identities and personal biographies with social and cultural systems of power, highlighting the implications of these for young people’s experiences within intimate relationships. Finding from across this study indicate young people in Samoa are engaging in intimate relationships and grappling with actions and approaches related to current and future experiences of IPV. Young people in Samoa want to engage in safe and fulfilling intimate relationships built on equality, but intersections of identities related to gender, age, religion and sexuality, with social gender expectations that support male leadership and hierarchical social systems, limit avenues and opportunities for young people to question current practices and explore new approaches. Findings suggest the interactive production provided an opportunity for participants to embody current and new approaches, and to physically express and explore alternative responses in a safe space. These embodied opportunities built a sense of empowerment and courage to try new approaches in practice. Such findings indicate a potential for drama as a tool for supporting critical consciousness in relation to intimate relationship practices with diverse groups of young people warrants further investigation. This thesis makes three significant contributions to public health: addressing an important gap in knowledge to inform IPV prevention with young people in Samoa; building on a small body of literature indicating a role for drama in public health research and practice; and supporting continued engagement with social theories in public health, specifically advocating for intersectionality informed approaches in health promotion research and practice. ii Declaration by author This thesis is composed of my original work, and contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference has been made in the text.     The Dramatisation of Pacific Diaspora in Albert Wendt’s The Songmaker’s Chair Paloma Fresno Calleja Universitat de les Illes Balears Abstract My paper looks at Albert Wendt’s play The Songmaker’s Chair (2004) as an example of the collective dramatisation of the experience of diaspora carried out by Pacific playwrights in New Zealand. Wendt’s play conforms to a conventional five-act structure but contains fragments of Samoan Fale aitu −a comic form employed as a weapon of social comment − as well as performative elements borrowed from stand-up comedy and hip hop. By combining western and Samoan dramatic forms, Wendt calls attention to the hybrid quality of Pacific identity in diaspora as well as to the range of multicultural elements available in contemporary New Zealand society. The oft-quoted statement that New Zealand is a Pacific nation is more than a tourist catch phrase or a description of the country’s political, economic or cultural links with its neighbouring islands. In addition to its Polynesian roots, traced from the settlement of its indigenous Maori population, New Zealand’s contemporary connections with the Pacific are the result of more recent migration waves which started in the 1960s, following the governmental demand for foreign labour. Contemporary Pacific Island population is a mixture of the descendants of these migrants, second or third generation New Zealand-born, and newcomers who continue to arrive in the country in pursue of jobs or education. About 14% of Auckland’s population is of Pacific descent and several of its southern suburbs concentrate a greater number of Pacific islanders than some of the islands themselves.

  • Ritual Performance and Spirituality in Samoan Theatre
    “SPIRITUAL PLAY”: RITUAL PERFORMANCE AND SPIRITUALITY IN SAMOAN THEATRE David O’Donnell Abstract Pacific Island (Pasifika) migrants in New Zealand have created a unique diasporic theatre, exploring the impact of migration on the family and cultural institutions. There are at least thirteen different Pacific languages and cultures in New Zealand, each with its own distinct ritual and spiritual traditions, such as the invocation of spiritual agency in the pre-colonial Samoan theatre form fale aitu. Aitu literally means ghost or spirit, and during fale aitu performances the lead actor “becomes” a spirit when in role, endowing him with a supernatural sanction that allows him to parody authority figures in the village. Spiritual beliefs in Pacific cultures have been radically transformed since the intervention of Christian missionaries from the 1830s onwards. Present-day churches foreground theatrical events such as White Sunday, during which children perform dramatic sketches and plays. Many Pacific performers had their first experience of performance at White Sunday. This paper examines performative strategies that manifest the spiritual dimension onstage in Samoan theatre. The fale aitu tradition has been adapted and hybridised in performances including Kightley and Ifopo’s Romeo and Tusi and Kneubuhl’s Think of a Garden, while Muagututi’a and Vaele’s Angels reconstructs a White Sunday performance onstage. Samoan theatre provides a distinctive case study of syncretic performance practice that re-interprets ritual and spiritual practices in the context of contemporary urban cultures. ABSTRACT Kumu Kahua Theatre is a non-profit theatre company in Honolulu which has been in existence since 1971. It is the only theatre in the world dedicated to producing plays which speak particularly to the multi-ethnic audiences of Hawai‘i. Over the past thirty years Hawaii’s “local” playwrights have benefited from a working relationship with Kumu Kahua Theatre, which has served as an original stage on which they could practice and refine their craft. This dissertation defines what is meant by “local” theatre, and includes a brief historical overview of Haw aii’s socio-political climate and theatrical activities before 1971 to provide a foundation from which to discuss Kumu Kahua Theatre and Hawaii’s contemporary “local” playwrights.

As I will try to argue, the development such visions and practices calls for an imaginative rethinking of national identity and as such has much to learn from postcolonial situations where the institutions of the Western-style nation state sit uncomfortably on top of (or beside) social formations shaped by long histories of prior occupation and settlement. While such arrangements do not in themselves make for political innovation, they provide imaginative resources for writers whose lives and work chart and explore challenging ways of inhabiting and sharing globalized nation spaces.

    TRANSFORMATIONS Journal of Media & Culture http://www.transformationsjournal.org/journal/24/04.shtml ISSN 1444-3775 Issue No. 24 2014 — The Other Western Hollywood Westerns and the Pacific: John Kneubuhl and The Wild Wild West By Sarina Pearson In the mid to early twentieth century Pacific, Hollywood westerns and their signature trope, the cowboy, were extremely popular (Pearson 157-160). Whereas the cinematic cowboy’s popularity outside of the United States might once have been considered simply more evidence of Hollywood’s imperialist dominance, contemporary scholars have focused instead upon the complex contradiction his popularity represents (Meeuf 272-284; Salesa, “Cowboys in the House” 330-332; Somerville 663-664, 673-677). At least in theory, the western’s unwavering commitment to hegemonic white masculinity and U.S. colonial domination should have alienated rather than appealed to audiences in the Pacific. However, in Samoa, Tonga, and New Zealand, audiences clearly preferred westerns (Keesing and Keesing 166; Keesing 441) identifying closely with celluloid cowboys rather than the cinematic Indians with whom these audiences arguably had much more in common historically and socio-politically. Scholars working in Central Africa where cowboys were similarly popular (Ambler 133-157; Burns 103-117; Gondola 76-77; Reynolds 399-419), attribute the western’s appeal to its capacity to express and mitigate inequality with transcendent masculinity and cosmic justice (Powdermaker 254). Similar reasons seem to account for the genre’s popularity in the Pacific (Pearson 156-157). The paradox presented by avid transnational consumption of white masculinity on remote islands at the end of Hollywood’s distribution chain is not the only way in which westerns and Pacific communities inter-related.

  • Wi Samoan 452
    WI SAMOAN 452 Samoan 452 will provide students with a theoretical linguistic framework through which to analyze the Samoan language. Special emphasis will be placed on the unique features of Samoan as a member of the Polynesian language family. When possible, aspects of Samoan grammar will be contrasted with other Polynesian languages. We will also look at the socio-linguistic and socio-cultural contexts of language use in Samoan society. The course will be taught in English and Samoan and those with high proficiency in the Samoan language will be encouraged to complete the required assignments in the Samoan language. Class meetings will be conducted as lectures and discussions. Students are encouraged to present their own views of the Samoan language throughout the course. Because the class is Writing Intensive, students will be required to write a great deal each week. Since the Samoan language competencies of students may vary, it is important that each weekly writing assignment be carefully reviewed by your peers in small groups and by the instructor. Each assignment will be returned to you for re-writing and re- submission for further comments by the instructor. The writing assignments (described below) allow for enhancement of individual written communication skills in class topic areas. The re-editing of corrected assignments will enable students to improve their abilities to write in Samoan and English about the selected topics. Likewise, the focus on Samoan language and socio-linguistics in this course builds important background for the social and cultural context of the Samoan language and provides the prerequisite course work for entry into the native speaker level classes of Samoan 421, 422, 431, 432, and 461.

Milwaukee seems a fitting place in which to end my 25-year journey towards researching and authoring a dissertation that has occupied almost half my life. The Wisconsin city feels simultaneously industrial and poor, messy and hopeful, unsure of the future yet solidly grounded in a past marked by both capital and labor. In other words, it resembles me. The urban landscape is being torn down, emptied out for just-over-the-horizon gentrification, yet flowered with the most beautiful of European-American architecture constructed sturdily by early-twentieth-century immigrant workers. As if uncertain of the genre language through which to articulate these discordant historical textures and temporalities, so as to represent the unrepresentable.
