A crowd of 12,901 - the largest crowd for a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) game witnessed the Renegades just beat the Stars on what was a warmish Saturday afternoon in Melbourne on 2nd of January 2016. The Renegades won the first derby encounter between the two with just one-ball remaining but it was the crowd that stole the headlines as not only was it a domestic record but it was also bigger than any Women’s T20 final. “It’s definitely one of my best memories so far and I’m going to take it back home and hopefully we can get the same going in South Africa,” said Stars player, South African Mignon du Preez. The MCG estimated that 5,500 people were in attendance in innings break and more than double that entered through the gates for the second half of the game, which ended 90-minutes before the Stars and Renegades took the field for the men’s BBL encounter. It was the first televised live game of the competition on free-to-air television with Network 10 covering the action and it lived up to it’s billing.
