2 WOMEN’S DIARY COBURG JANUARY 2016 ISSUE 12 Sport News Inaugural women’s Big Bash derby brings record crowd

by: Rodney Mouawad The inaugural women’s Big Bash derby between the and drew a domestic and world record crowd.

A crowd of 12,901 - the largest crowd for a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) game witnessed the Renegades just beat the Stars on what was a warmish Saturday afternoon in Melbourne on 2nd of January 2016.

The Renegades won the first derby encounter between the two with just one-ball remaining but it was the crowd that stole the headlines as not only was it a domestic record but it was also bigger than any Women’s T20 final.

“It’s definitely one of my best memories so far and I’m going to take it back home and hopefully we can get the same going in South Africa,” said Stars player, South African Mignon du Preez.

The MCG estimated that 5,500 people were in attendance in innings break and more than double that entered through the gates for the second half of the game, which ended 90-minutes before the Stars and Renegades took the field for the men’s BBL encounter.

It was the first televised live game of the competition on free-to-air television with Network 10 covering the action and it lived up to it’s billing.

With weather at it’s hottest, and our waist-lines still a little too snug from all that holiday season over-indulging it’s tempting just to grab the loosest, darkest, drab clothing when we’re stumbling about trying to get ready each morning. But putting a little more thought into the outfits you wear can yield positive results. Adding a touch of yellow to your wardrobe can really get the blood pumping and your mind going. Studies have shown that yellow has a stimulating effect. We all associate the bright colour with sunshine, happiness and cheer. Just having the colour in your field of vision can perk up your work. But be careful not to over-do it. Researchers found that babies who sleep in rooms which are painted yellow cry more. It’s thought that the constant over-stimulation is exhausting for them. In a professional context, wearing some yellow every now and that can help. If people think of you are a bit dull, and a stickler for rules, wearing yellow every now and then will help other’s see you as spontaneous, energetic, warm and bright. But do be careful not to wear too much, or to wear it too often. You don’t want to be known around the office as ‘Big Bird’. For romantic dates or special occasions a muted or darker shade can be better. Mustard looks fabulous on darker skin tones. A lovely pale lemon can work with alabaster skin. So next time you’re stuck for something to wear, consider putting some yellow on and bringing a little sunshine into your life.

17 by Erica Bell How To Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Were you full on big dreams and resolutions for this new year? Have you already fallen off the wagon and gone back to your old ways? Here are some strategies for getting back on track with those high hopes and ground-breaking goals.

Dream Big Sometimes we give up, or just can’t find the motivation, because the goal that we’ve set for ourselves is just too average, boring and generic. Try thinking about what you truly want, rather than just taking on the same goals as everyone.

Break it Down Big goals can be daunting. Try breaking it down into lots of little steps, so that each little element is an easily-achievable part of a whole. That way you can step from one small target up to the next and the next, instead of falling flat trying to make one massive leap. Set2016 Realistic Targets You’re not going to go from wobbly to toned in two weeks. It wouldn’t be healthy or lasting. You need to think about what is a safe and reasonable timetable, and you also need to be realistic about the outcome.

Give Yourself Treats You can’t rely on other people to be your cheer squad, and to keep you motivated towards reaching your goals. Giving yourself healthy treats can go a long way towards staying on track, but make sure your treats aren’t counter-productive. If you’re trying to get fit and healthy, a day at a spa is better than an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Best of luck with your New Year’s resolutions and achieving that better you!

21 DESERTS Watermelon Six Ways

Watermelon is the perfect summer fruit. If you and the kids ever get sick of eating it just on its own, here are six new ways to experiment. by Helena McCain

1 WATERMELON JELLY Hollow out a watermelon and use the pulp to create your own watermelon flavoured jelly. Allow ample setting time or the jelly in the middle will still be liquid.

2 PICKLED WATERMELON RIND The rind of a watermelon can be used the same way you use cucumbers in a salad, or just add vinegar to pickle.

3 WATERMELON ROLL-UPS & RIND CANDIES With just water and sugar you can make all manner of watermelon-flavoured sweets. Roll-ups can be made with 8 cups of cubed watermelon and 2/3 of a cup of sugar. Puree the watermelon in a blender, then drain the juice from the pulp with cheese cloth and a sieve. You can use the juice to make sorbet, all you need is that dried out watermelon pulp. Add the sugar and mix then fill two baking trays and put them in the oven at 170 until the mixture is leathery. It can take up to three hours. Then leave to rest, cut into strips and pack into air-tight containers. Too easy.

4 WATERMELON APPETIZERS Watermelon, goats cheese, finely sliced onion and mint, with a dash of fresh- ly-ground pepper are the perfectly balanced combination of fresh sweetness, acid and zing.

5 WATERMELON STEAK If you’re on a meat-free kick after over-doing it during the Christmas New Years seasons, how about a fresh grilled marinated slab of watermelon, instead of a chop or a hamburger? It’s tasty and refreshing.

6 WATERMELON ICECREAM If you’re quite the expert gourmet, you’ll have no trouble dragging out your icecream-maker and whipping up a gorgeous watermelon icecream or sorbet. But if you’re more of a novice in the kitchen, then you can still have your water- melon and eat it too. Just buy a tub of icecream, allow it to thaw slightly and mix the de-pipped pulp through.
