El germen de esta tesis está en la lectura infantil de obras que en ediciones resumidas o íntegras han estado en casa de mis padres desde que tengo memoria. Sólo por eso el primer agradecimiento es para mis padres. De mi madre ha sido, además, documentación médica. Una parte fundamental de la documentación la obtuve en la Universidad de Cornell. Allí también tuve la generosa ayuda del profesor James Eli Adams, que me animó con lo más difícil, que es empezar. Mi introducción a la psicología vino del profesor Daryl Bem, que hizo atrayente un campo completamente nuevo para mí y me recomendó algunas lecturas. En Sevilla, el profesor Rafael Portillo hizo recomendaciones sobre la relación entre la novela victoriana y el teatro, y la importancia del melodrama. Dice Umberto Eco en Cómo se hace una tesis que al director de una tesis no hay que nombrarlo en los agradecimientos porque sólo hace su trabajo, y se le presupone. Así que aquí sólo agradeceré a María Ángeles Toda Iglesia su paciencia y amabilidad. Puedo decir lo mismo de Ana Luisa Martín Bejarano. Las dos hacen mucho más de lo que se supone que es su obligación. El profesor Carlos Portillo Fernández me prestó un libro con todas las ilustraciones originales de las novelas de Charles Dickens. Tras su muerte, tan lamentada, su hermano José Ramón quiso que lo conservara yo. Esas ilustraciones, aun quedando fuera del ámbito de estudio de esta tesis, han sido una inspiración que ha facilitado el análisis de los personajes. Enrique Salom Marco sugirió cómo mejorar algunos aspectos de la bibliografía y a organizar fases finales del trabajo. Fernando de Sagarra me aclaró dónde buscar algunas comparaciones con la novela francesa. María García-Puente Sánchez localizó para mí documentación médica y me enseñó a usar PubMed. Thank you, Mr. Ma. 4 RESUMEN La presente tesis es un estudio panorámico del modo en el que las novelas de Charles Dickens tratan la violencia de género, entendida como violencia contra la mujer por su pareja o ex-pareja, y la violencia sexual. También se tratan los casos menos frecuentes en los que las agresoras son personajes femeninos, para dar una visión de conjunto de la violencia en la pareja en la obra del autor. Se parte de un análisis de los roles sociales victorianos del hombre y la mujer que tenían un marcado carácter de clase, con un ideal que se predicaba de la clase media y que influye en la manera en la que el autor retrata diversos tipos de violencia familiar. Esta violencia se muestra en todos los entornos sociales y en casi todas las novelas, y su retrato es plausible si se compara con los estudios de sociólogos y psicólogos modernos respecto a la violencia contra la mujer, un retrato condicionado por las convenciones literarias victorianas, en particular sobre la moral sexual de los personajes femeninos y la influencia del melodrama. Dickens observa el problema y lo denuncia, sin proponer soluciones. Para realizar este análisis, se une la crítica literaria feminista, el enfoque histórico, y para la comparación con la situación actual, los estudios sociológicos sobre la construcción de los géneros y la psicología. PALABRAS CLAVE: victorianismo, masculinidad, estudios de género, violencia de género, Charles Dickens. 5 ABSTRACT This Thesis is a panoramic study of the way in which Charles Dickens’s novels treat gender violence, understood as violence against women from their partner or ex-partner, and all sexual violence. The work also includes less frequent cases with a female aggressor of a male partner, in order to give a more complete overview of intimate violence in the works of this author. The starting point is an analysis of the gender roles of the Victorian period, which had a strong class component, and defended a middle-class ideal that influences the way that the author shows different types of family violence. All social levels and nearly all the novels show these forms of violence, and their portrait is plausible if it’s compared with sociological and psychological studies about violence against women. This depiction is conditioned by Victorian literary conventions, particularly sexual morality concerning female characters and the influence of melodrama. Dickens observes and denounces the problem without coming up with solutions. This investigation puts together feminist literary criticism, a historical approach, and for the comparison with the current situation, psychologycal and sociological work on gender roles. Charles Dickens, el novelista victoriano por excelencia, mostró una gran preocupación por los problemas sociales de su tiempo, tanto en sus obras de ficción como en su periodismo. Una cuestión de gran interés para él que no ha sido suficientemente tratada por la crítica es la violencia de género, que aparece muy frecuentemente en sus novelas. En esta tesis, observaremos cómo la violencia contra las mujeres, y en ocasiones, la violencia doméstica contra los hombres, se trata de manera verosímil, denunciándola como uno de los males de la sociedad, en un retrato influido por la concepción victoriana de los géneros y de las clases sociales. Analizaremos también cómo la denuncia de un mal social, el acertado análisis psicológico, incluso en línea con lo que la psicología moderna conoce sobre la naturaleza del maltrato, y las propuestas reformistas se hallan modificadas o matizadas por la moral del autor, las necesidades narratológicas, o los intereses comerciales de un escritor popular.

Pickard wrote series such as Crime Club, and also adapted American programs like One Man's Family, in which he substituted Australian settings, situations, and colloquialisms. By 1935, however, Pickard wanted to try something new and left for the United States in August of that year.
