The first order of business for the Board was a visit to Coco Solo for an inspection of quarters and community facilities transferred to the Canal by the Navy. Folbwing this inspi>ction on the morning of January 14, the Board gave formal approval of tentative plans for placing these facilities in service. An important step in line with the Board's action to expedite further stud- ies on plans to increase the Canal ca- pacity was taken less than two weeks after the meeting when a contract was signed for a study on marine traffic control procedures. The New York en- gineering firm of Gibbs & Hill will con- duct this study which will cover the degree and timeliness of control of ship movements throughout a Canal transit. Following approval of the contract with Gibbs & Hill, Governor Potter said: "This is only one of many avenues cur- rently being explored in our endeavor to determine what we can do with existing facilities to expedite Canal traffic." Funds for initiating the short-range plan of Canal improvements, which will cost nearly $20,000,000, are included in the President's budget sent to Congress early last month. Zupanovic, L. Grbic & M. Baric University of Zadar, Zadar, Croatia ABSTRACT: The passage through the Panama Canal has become the usual waterway for all the ships that can navigate through the Canal. The traffic through the canal is limited by the size of a ship. The need for the expansion of the Canal has emerged due to the development of the global trade and the shipping industry. The new dimensions of the lock‐chambers determine the size of the ships as well. The new generation of ships built to the largest specifications possible to transit the current locks of the canal are called the Post‐Panamax vessels. The maximum dimensions of these ships are 366 meters in length, 49 meters in beam and 15.2 metres in draught. The paper analyses savings in the operational costs on three types of the Post‐Panamax vessels after the Canal expansion. 1 INTRODUCTION The construction of the new and expanded canal enabled the passage of the Post‐Panamax ships. The cumulative total of the demolitions will permit the recycling of more than 940,000 tons of metals. The 2008 flow of discarded vessels has not slowed down. Since the beginning of the year 276 vessels have been sent to be scrapped which represents more than 2 millions tons of metals whereas throughout 2007 289 vessels were scrapped for a total of 1.7 milion tons of metals. The average price offered by Bangladeshi and Indian ship breakers has risen to 750-800 $ per ton. The ship owners are taking advantage of these record prices by sending their old vessels to be demolished. Even the Chinese ship breaking yards have increased their price via the purchase of the container ship Provider at 570$ per ton, with prices averaging more than 500 $. However, these high prices have now decreased with the collapse of metal prices during summer and the shipyards are therefore renegotiating at lower price levels with brokers and cash buyers sometimes changing the final destination at the last minute. This was the case of the Laieta, which was supposed to leave for India for 910 $ per ton and was sold to Bangladesh at 750 $ per ton. The price differences have been particularly notable in India; the shipyards prices have returned to 600 $ per ton. From June to September, India with 60 vessels (51%) to demolish, is ahead of Bangladesh with 40 (34%), The United States 8 (7%), China 4 (4%), Turkey 2 (2%), Belgium and Mexico, 1 vessel each (1%).
