Meet the Spring 2017 Mentors Rowan University Transfer Services Meet the Spring 2017 Mentors Rowan University Transfer Services James Agee Senior Law and Justice Studies Major Sociology Minor [email protected] Hello, my name is James Agee and I am from South Plainfield, NJ. I transferred to Rowan in the fall of 2015 after attending St. John’s University, which is located in Queens, NY, for my freshman year. I am a law and justice studies major with a minor in sociology. I am also a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society. I spend most of my time at the recreation center playing basketball or working out and enjoy watching sports. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to help and meet new people here at Rowan! Arthur Bautista Junior Political Science Major [email protected] Hey guys! My name is Arthur but my friends call me by my second name, Andrew or Drew. I was born and raised in the Philippines, spent my first two semesters of college there until I transferred to Rowan in the fall of 2016. I am currently a junior majoring in Political Science and I am also the president of Rowan’s International Club. When I’m not in class, you’d most likely see me at International Center, where I work as a Student Worker. In my free time, when I’m not doing school work (which unfortunately doesn’t happen a lot), you’d probably see me playing Pokemon on my 3ds, or watching Netflix or any of my favorite tv shows: HTGAWM, Modern Family, The Crown, Quantico, to name a few. I am from Reading Massachusetts and transferred to Rowan this past fall from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. I am an Elementary Education major with a dual major of American Studies. I came to Rowan to study Early Childhood Education and it was the best decision for me. At Rowan, I am involved in Sigma Alpha Lambda (SAL), which is a national leadership and honors organization. I have been part of many service projects through SAL. In my free time, I love to hang out with friends, bake, do arts and crafts, and meet new people. I work as a Literacy Specialist at my current job where I help recent immigrants learn English and acclimate to American society and culture.     Biological Sciences | 3 Gregory Hecht Associate Professor Biological Sciences [email protected] Education: BS (Molecular Genetics), University of Rochester MA (Molecular Biology), Princeton University PhD (Molecular Biology), Princeton University Research Expertise: Microbial genetics | Applied microbiology | Biology education My laboratory research interests focus on the use of both modern and “classical” genetic methods to address questions in applied microbiology. The primary project is the development and analysis of bacterial strains with the ability to immobilize soluble lead. We are using the freshwater oligotroph Caulobacter crescentus as a model organism to identify the genes and cellular components that are responsible for the biosorption of lead via a biologically mediated precipitation. We are using so-called classical genetic techniques coupled with whole genome sequence analysis. Our work has demonstrated that cysteine metabolism and enzymatic phosphatase activity are two of the key players in the biosorption of lead. We also conduct biofuels research. To make biofuel fermentations economical, the biocatalyst must have significant tolerance to the biofuel product. We have isolated ethanol-tolerant mutants of Escherichia coli FBR5 and carried out physiological and genomic analyses of these strains, demonstrating that the iron import gene fecA is important in determining the ethanol tolerance of the organism. Other previous applied microbiology projects in my laboratory have included industrial partnerships to study the enhancement of microbial activity in commercial grease traps and an analysis of microbial contamination of rice flour. Recent Academic Projects: My other area of interest is in the retention and education outcomes of students in the biology curriculum. I am currently involved in the Cumberland College Bridges to Rowan University, which focuses on improving the degree completion success rate of minority and disadvantaged students from Cumberland County College who transfer to Rowan University.

This is the first plan the college has authored in seven years. The report provides a theoretical framework for heterarchical planning, which allows for complexity and interrelations of structural analysis, and lateral decision making. The process of decision making and its culture at Salem Community College has been the traditional top down command-and-control method. According to the document, this has been the result of the lack of planning coupled with a general lack of information about the institution's past and current students. The college has implemented several new programs to gather information about the college's past and current students, and tailored existing programs to better suit these individuals. The report contains and presents Salem Community College's 1999-2000 Strategic Plan, its authoring strategy, a timeline, and proposed strategy for strategic plan implementation. Transforming the college has become an important task to all of those involved with Salem Community College. Between February and May of 1999 over 80% of the Salem Community College personnel, the president, and the entire board of trustees were involved in the process of creating a culture of shared decision-making.
