Paul Rollinson, I am writing this letter to you as the General Secretary of IndustriALL Global Union, which represents more than 50 million workers in mining, energy and manufacturing sectors throughout the world, including Mauritania and Canada, to call on Kinross Gold Corporation to intervene at its subsidiary in Mauritania, Tasiast Mauritanie Limited SA, to ensure full compliance with the labour law and guarantee the health and safety of workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please note that the Fédération nationale de l'énergie, des hydrocarbures, des mines et de l'industrie (FNEHMI) is affiliated to our global trade union. Workers of Kinross Gold Corporation’s subsidiary in Mauritania, Tasiast Mauritanie Limited SA, were forced to start an indefinite strike on 5 May to defend their legitimate rights, as enshrined in the labour law, and guarantee their health and safety during COVID-19 pandemic. IndustriALL Global Union supports the workers’ demands for strict respect and implementation of the labour codes pertaining, among others, to full consultation and dialogue with workers’ representatives, legal duration of work, overtime, and weekly rest. Furthermore, workers’ representatives have underlined the need to comply with the health and safety directives established by the competent authorities related to the Covid-19 pandemic, which include quarantine and isolation for 14 days, from the date of arrival, of anyone who arrives on site. On 18 April, workers’ representatives sent a letter to the management to express their deep concern and demands, but the company has failed to respond to them. On 4 May, workers’ delegates convened a meeting with the company’s management to negotiate the demands but no agreement has been reached yet. IndustriALL Global Union urges you to intervene immediately, respond to the workers’ legitimate demands, guarantee workers’ health and safety, and strictly abide by the labour law provisions. We strongly encourage your company to engage in a constructive dialogue with workers’ representatives and the FNEHMI to find a solution to this urgent matter in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. I anticipate your swift response and action. Sincerely, Valter Sanches General Secretary .
