O. Murdock, of Washington, DC, from her ancestor, John M. Lea, a son-in-law of John Overton and were donated by her to the Tennessee Historical Society. The 1982 addition to the collection was given by Overton L. Murdock, of Bethesda, Maryland. The collection consists of 2.52 linear feet of shelf space and numbers approximately 1,025 items and three volumes. These papers are the property of the Tennessee Historical Society and are available on microfilm at the Joint Universities Library and the Manuscript Division of the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Single photocopies of documents may be made for individual or scholarly purposes. However, for commercial use, or use that may constitute a copy right infringement, the user should obtain permission from the historical society. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection of papers of John Overton, numbering approximately 900 items, are composed of correspondence, two promissory notes, a Masonic document and a small diary of Nashville events listed yearly beginning in 1780, ending in 1851. The correspondence deals primarily with land cases of John Overton as lawyer and judge with some Tennessee politics intermingled. -

Chapter 6 Choctaw and Creek Removals The idea of indian removal as a government obligation first reared its head in 1802 when officials of the state of Georgia made an agreement with federal government officials. In the Georgia Compact, the state of Georgia gave up its claims to territorial lands west of that state in exchange for $1,250,000 and a promise that the federal government would abolish Indian title to Georgia lands as soon as possible. How seriously the government took its obligation to Georgia at the time of the agreement is unknown. The following year, however, the Louisiana Purchase was made, and almost immedi- ately, the trans-Mississippi area was seen by some as the answer to “The Indian Problem.” Not everyone agreed. Some congress- men argued that removal to the West was impractical because of land-hungry whites who could not be restrained from crossing the mighty river to obtain land. Although their conclusion was correct, it was probably made more in opposition to President Jefferson than from any real con- cern about the Indians or about practicality. It was during this period that U.S. Army policy required that African Americans serve in separate military units from white soldiers. All four of the United States Congressionally mandated all-black units were stationed at Fort Huachuca during this period, beginning with the 24th Infantry and following in chronological order; the 9th Cavalry, the 10th Cavalry, and the 25th Infantry. -

1. Blount Mansion War of 1812 in Tennessee: 200 W. Hill Avenue, Knoxville A Driving Tour Governor Willie Blount, who served from 1809 to 1815, led Tennessee during the War of 1812. He lived in this sponsored and developed by the Center for Historic historic structure, originally the home of U.S. territorial Preservation, Middle Tennessee State University, Mur- freesboro Two hundred years ago, an international war raged across the United States of America. Thousands of American soldiers died in the conflict; the nation’s capital city was invaded, leaving both the White House and the U.S. Capitol in near ruins. An American invasion of Canada ended in failure. Defeat appeared to be certain—leaving the nation’s future in doubt—but down on the southern frontier Tennesseans fought and won major battles that turned the tide and made the reputation of a future U.S. president, Andrew Jackson. This conflict between the United States, Great Britain, governor William Blount (Willie’s older half-brother), Canada, and a score of sovereign Indian nations was called throughout the war. In 1813, Governor Blount raised the War of 1812 because the United States declared war over $37,000 and 2,000 volunteer soldiers to fight the on England in June of that year. Humans construct humanity and personhood partially via interactions with other-than-human persons, such as animals, plants, and objects. I examine ritualized interactions between humans and others-than-human in a southeastern Indigenous "natureculture," exploring the intersections of ontology, personhood, and performance practice. Pvlvcekolv, an animistic Florida-based tribal town with a ceremonial Fire that pre-dates European Contact, maintains a centuries-old ritual tradition, the busk. Sometimes known as "Green Corn Ceremonialism," many Native communities share this tradition, including ii Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Yuchi, and other Creek peoples historically and in the present day. Performing the songs, dances, and ritual actions of the busk places participants into dialogue with other-than-human persons. -

THE WAR OF 1812 MAGAZINE ISSUE 26 December 2016 Appendix I War of 1812 Chronology Compiled by Ralph Eshelman and Donald Hickey Introduction This War of 1812 Chronology includes all the major events related to the conflict beginning with the 1797 Jay Treaty of amity, commerce, and navigation between the United Kingdom and the United States of America and ending with the United States, Weas and Kickapoos signing of a peace treaty at Fort Harrison, Indiana, June 4, 1816. While the chronology includes items such as treaties, embargos and political events, the focus is on military engagements, both land and sea. It is believed this chronology is the most holistic inventory of War of 1812 military engagements ever assembled into a chronological listing. Don Hickey, in his War of 1812 Chronology, comments that chronologies are marred by errors partly because they draw on faulty sources and because secondary and even primary sources are not always dependable.1 For example, opposing commanders might give different dates for a military action, and occasionally the same commander might even present conflicting data. Jerry Roberts in his book on the British raid on Essex, Connecticut, points out that in a copy of Captain Coot’s report in the Admiralty and Secretariat Papers the date given for the raid is off by one day.2 Similarly, during the bombardment of Fort McHenry a British bomb vessel's log entry date is off by one day.3 Hickey points out that reports compiled by officers at sea or in remote parts of the theaters of war seem to be especially prone to ambiguity and error. -

His Policy was WHAT?!?...Thomas Jefferson and the Native Americans Summary Description: Thomas Jefferson was a unique and very influential individual in our nation’s history. I have had the opportunity to examine and explore Mr. Jefferson while at this NEH Seminar. I have studied at great length both his writings and his character. I discovered that Jefferson was a man of very conflicting styles and ideals. He would write or say one thing, and would then carry out something different. I believe you will discover this in the lesson concerning Thomas Jefferson and his communications concerning Native Americans. Intended Audience: The materials and topic are best suited for a high school classroom. Unites States History, Sociology, Cultural Studies, or Native American Studies would be the appropriate class settings. This lesson is formulated for a class of 5-6, 50 minute class periods. Block scheduling, or a different length class period will require modifications. The lesson could also be modified for a middle school setting. The Purpose: Many would argue that Thomas Jefferson was one of the most important presidents of the United States. During his life, the United States was encountering issues with the Native Americans, both good and bad. I believe that our students and our society can be enhanced by understanding the role and the issues surrounding the Native Americans throughout history. One aspect of this role is to understand the relationship and ideas that Jefferson portrayed towards Native Americans before, during, and after his presidency. Learning Objective: Students will be able to: Explain the attitude of Thomas Jefferson towards Native Americans as expressed in his writings prior to his presidency.
