For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -
Jay Bregman Hilary Armstrong Gave the Gnos
NEOPLATONIZING GNOSTICISM AND GNOSTICIZING NEOPLATONISM IN THE “AMERICAN BAROQUE” Jay Bregman Hilary Armstrong gave the Gnostics a fair hearing in his “Dualism: Platonic, Gnostic, and Christian.”1 He basically viewed Gnosticism as having some points of contact with Platonism, but since they were not doing the same thing as philosophers, he reasoned, it would be wrong to treat them as “bad philosophers.” Although Gnostic anti-cosmism is balanced by his nuanced view of certain Gnostic pro-cosmic ideas, Gnostics are “mythicizers,” hence doing something very different from philosophers since, in the last analysis, they think that the cosmos is at best transitory—a place to flee from. However, in the last decade or so, there has been a reconsideration of Armstrong’s view. Led especially by John Turner and others, scholars have affirmed that Gnostics, Middle Platonists, and Neoplatonists indeed have more in common philosophically than had been previously supposed; Gnos- tics were perhaps even writing commentaries on Plato’s dialogues in order to gain a respectable hearing in Plotinus’ seminars.2 Nineteenth-century America was the scene of an earlier engagement with Gnosticism, through which heterodox thinkers paved the way for its current serious reception. I will trace the roots and anticipations of contem- porary discussions, in the Neoplatonic, late Transcendentalist journal, The Platonist, and other North American sources. Metaphysical thinkers of the later American Renaissance painted their religious symbols on a Neoplatonic canvas. A secularizing world had given rise to notions of a universal syncretistic cosmic Theism, which welcomed the “esoteric” strains of all traditions. Alexander Wilder, M.D., a regular con- tributor to The Platonist, also cast a wide syncretistic net: the Neoplatonists taught Platonic philosophy in the form of a religion embracing some of the characteristic features of Jainism, the Sankhya and Pythagorean schools (hē gnōsis tōn ontōn). -

1 Anglican-Orthodox Relations A Dead-End or a Way Forward? By Dimitris Salapatas This article was published in KOINONIA, The Journal of the Anglican and Eastern Churches Association, New Series, No.63, Ascensiontide 2014, pp. 15-31. Relations between the Orthodox Church and the Anglican Communion have been an ongoing phenomenon since the 17th century. However, the 20th century has taken the relations to a new level, resulting in the establishment of the Official Dialogue between the two churches. This century will be known as the Age of Ecumenism, “the age in which Christians of all denominations became aware of the scandal of disunion, and attempted to do something to bring it to an end.”1 We live in a globalised, digital world and epoch; it is inevitable that this would have affected the relations between the churches on a global level, taking us away from the past, isolated state within which the churches and the people existed. It is crucial to understand why this has happened now, i.e. the dialogue between Eastern and Western Christianity, whether it is a dead-end or a way forward for all of Christianity. The number of Anglican-Orthodox groups which exist, primarily in the West, and more specifically in Britain, have contributed immensely towards the establishment of the current dialogue. The first group to be founded in Britain was “The Association for the Promotion of the Unity of Christendom”2 which was founded in 1857, whilst the Eastern Church Association came into being in 1864. David Lindsay (1876–1945), whose novels were originally published in the nineteen twenties and thirties, was a forgotten figure in literature until one of his novels, an extraordinary and elaborate fantasy, A Voyage to Arcturus1, was republished by Gollancz.2 It went on to be published in numerous popular paperback editions, as something of an underground classic during the psychedelic sixties and seventies, along with the work of other rediscovered fantasy authors such as Mervyn Peak, Lord Dunsany and J R Tolkien.3 Notwithstanding Fortean author and fringe culture pundit Mark Pilkington’s observation, that Arcturus might well be ‘the most psychedelic novel ever written’4 and the fact that Rick Doblin the founder and executive director of the psychedelic campaigning organisation MAPS named the home he built Arcturus in honour of Lindsay’s book5, the role of the consumption of psychoactive substances in the narrative of Arcturus seems to have gone almost entirely unremarked by commentators. -
The Poet As Novelist
THE POET AS NOVELIST Linda Hutcheon 1IN 1965 NORTHROP FRYE WROTE: "A striking fact about Can- adian poetry is the number of poets who have turned to narrative forms (including closet drama) rather than lyrical ones."1 It is indeed true that we possess a rather rich tradition of narrative poetry in this country, and, as Frye has also pointed out,2 much of our poetry that is lyrical in form is not at all lyrical in spirit. Yet it is also a fact that at least two of our decidedly lyric poets have turned to narrative, but narrative in prose: Leonard Cohen and Margaret Atwood. They have not totally rejected what Frye calls "the more manipulated comic and romantic formu- las of prose fiction" but they do seem to have used narrative for its natural affinities with ironic tones and themes.3 Unlike Pratt's tragic and impersonal narrative poems, the novels of Cohen and Atwood in particular are both ironic and per- sonal — that is, lyrical and not autobiographical. These novels are lyrical or poetic in yet another way, one that seems to set them apart from the creations of Canadian novelists proper. This difference would seem to lie in the particular structural use made of imagery and symbolism within the novels. It is not that the poet/novelists use more oí these devices, but that they use them in a different manner : they appear to be willing to trust the reader with the image. Poets, after all, have no choice; in their poetry, they have to. Novelists, on the other hand, have a different set of rhetorical tools at their command: among these, plot and character exposition and narrative explanation. -

Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer. -

David Lucking A Will and Two Ways The Ambivalence of Evil in Robertson Davies's The Deptford Trilogy Orthodox Christianity has always had for me the difficulty that it really won't come ... to grips with the problem of evil. It knows an enormous amount about evil, it discusses evil in fascinating terms, but evil is always the other thing: it is something which is apart from perfection, and man's duty is to strive for perfection. I could not reconcile that with such experience of life as I had, and the Jungian feeling that things tend to run into one another, that what looks good can be pushed to the point where it becomes evil, and that evil very frequently bears what can only be regarded as good fruit—this was the first time I'd ever seen that sort of thing given reasonable consideration, and it made enormous sense to me. I feel now that I am a person of strongly religious temperament, but when I say "religious" I mean immensely con- scious of powers of which I can have only the dimmest appre- hension, which operate by means that I cannot fathom, in directions which I would be a fool to call either good or bad. It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious strains worked to build a distinct religious outlook characterized by a respect for legitimate authority, whether civil, social, or religious. This study goes further to show the relevance of this distinct religious outlook for understanding Henry’s political stances. Henry’s sometimes seemingly erratic political principles cannot be understood in isolation from the wider context of his religious background. Uniquely harmonized
