Division I Championship Results / Records DIVISION I MEN’S LACROSSE CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2017 Championship 2 History 3 All-Time Results 9 Tournament Records 13 2017 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Maryland secures first national title since 1975: The Maryland men’s lacrosse team defeated Ohio State 9-6 to capture the 2017 Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship at Gilette Stadium Monday. Junior Tim Rotanz scored three goals to pace the Terps offense, while senior defender Tim Muller was named the Championship’s Most Outstanding Player. “We knew we were going to have to play our best game to have a chance to win, so I want to tip my hat to Ohio State,” Maryland coach John Tillman siad. “I’m obviously very proud of our team. I’m happy for our state, our school, our students and our alums. Especially the alums, having waited so long. I think that was a big thing that motivated us was to try to bring a championship back for them, but also living in the moment, knowing that this was their time. I couldn’t be happier for our guys.” Maryland held the Buckeyes’ attack at bay for most of the afternoon, limiting OSU to just 25 shots while junior goalie Dan Morris made 11 saves. The Terps scored three goals in the fourth quarter to seal the three-goal victory, as Maryland captured its 12th all-time National Title and first since 1975. Maryland took a 5-2 lead into the locker room, thanks in part to a pair of goals from junior Adam DiMillo who entered Monday’s game with just three goals on the year. Rotanz, Maltz and Kelly all scored as well to help the Terps build up a three-goal advantage. Maryland’s defense came up with several big stops to thwart the Buckeye’s offense, which included five first half saves for Morris. In addition to Muller, Rotanz, Connor Kelly, Dylan Maltz, Dan Morris and Matt Rambo were named to the all-tournament team. 2017 RESULTS Opening-Round Game Bryant 10, Monmouth 7 First Round (1) Maryland 12, Bryant 10 (8) Albany (NY) 15, North Carolina 12 (5) Denver 17, Air Force 10 (4) Notre Dame 15, Marquette 9 (3) Ohio St. 7, Loyola Maryland 4 Duke 19, (6) Johns Hopkins 6 Towson 12, (7) Penn St. 8 (2) Syracuse 11, Yale 10 Quarterfinals (1) Maryland 18, (8) Albany (NY) 9 (5) Denver 16, (4) Notre Dame 4 (3) Ohio St. 16, Duke 11 Towson 10, (2) Syracuse 7 Semifinals (1) Maryland 9, (5) Denver 8 (3) Ohio St. 11, Towson 10 Championship (1) Maryland 9, (3) Ohio St. 6 2017 Championship 2 HISTORY RESULTS Year Champion (Record) Coach Score Runner-Up Host or Site Final Game Total Paid Paid Attend. • 2017 Tewaaraton Award Winners
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARYLAND’S MATT RAMBO AND ZOE STUKENBERG NAMED 2017 TEWAARATON AWARD WINNERS WASHINGTON, June 1 – The Tewaaraton Foundation has announced University of Maryland attackman Matt Rambo and University of Maryland midfielder Zoe Stukenberg as the men’s and women’s winners of the 17th annual Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour. The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse players in the United States. This is the first time in the award’s history that two players from the same school have won the award in the same year. The all-time points and goals leader in Maryland’s prestigious history, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Matt Rambo led the Terps to their first national championship since 1975 and fourth straight Final Four appearance. The three-time USILA All-American helped the Terrapins to a Big Ten Championship and NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed for a second consecutive season. In the process, he became the first Terp to notch more than 40 goals and 40 assists in a single season, and earned the USILA Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player Award. Rambo’s 87 points and 45 assists were best in the Big Ten and good for third and fourth in the nation, respectively. The senior attackman from Glenside, Pa., is Maryland's first men’s Tewaaraton winner, the program’s second finalist (Joe Walters, 2006) and the first winner from the Big Ten Conference. The five men’s finalists were University of Denver faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste, University at Albany attackman Connor Fields, Yale University attackman Ben Reeves and Loyola (Md.) University attackman Pat Spence, and Rambo.
