GARTH Allan Hancock Foundation Univer5ity of Southern California 2 and Eniwetok Ma rine Biological Laboratory Introduction The brachyuran decapod crustaceans of the Marsh all Islands have been reviewed by Balss (1938) and by Miyake (1938, 1939). These reports stem from the German and Jap anese occupations, respect ively, the former being the result of the Pacific Exp edition of Dr. Sixten Bock, 1917-1918, the latter th e result of the Micronesia Expedition of Prof. Te iso Esaki, 1937-1938. According to Fosberg (1956, p. 1), J aluit Atoll was the headquarters of both the German and the Japan ese administrations, a fact that accounts for the preponderanc e of record s from the southern Marshall Isl ands. Additional coverage of the southern Marsh alls was provided by the 1950 Arno Atoll Expedition of the Coral Atoll Program of the Pa cific Science Board, the decapod crustaceans collected by Dr. R. W. Hiatt having been reported by Holthuis (1953). Carcinologically speak ing, the northern Marshalls ar e less well known, collections having been made only at Likieb Atoll by both Dr. Bock and Prof. Esaki and at Kwajalein Atoll by Prof . Esaki alone. Except for the shrimps, reported by Chace (1955), the extensive collections made in connection with Operation Crossroads in 1946- 1947, which includ ed Bikini, Rongelap, Rongerik, and Eniwetok atolls (Fosberg, 1956, p. 4), are at the U.S. Nationa l Museum awaiting stud y. -

Occurring in the Pacific Ocean Roy K. KROPP2 ABSTRACT: The coral gall crabs, Family Cryptochiridae, occurring in the Pacific Ocean are reviewed. Fifteen genera, including four new genera, are recognized: Cryptochirus Heller; Dacryomaia, new genus; Fizesereneia Takeda & Tamura; Fungicola Serene; Hapalocarcinus Stimpson; Hiroia Takeda & Tamura; Lithoscaptus Milne Edwards; Neotroglocarcinus Takeda & Tamura; Opecarcinus Kropp & Manning; Pelycomaia, new genus; Pseudocryptochirus Hiro; Pseudohapalocarcinus Fize & Serene; Sphenomaia, new genus; Utinomiella Kropp & Takeda; and Xynomaia, new genus. Host, depth, and distribution records are given for each genus. A key to the females of all gall crab genera is included. Spatio-temporal variability in coral (Anthozoa: Scleractinia) larval recruitment in the southern Gulf of California By Rafael A. Cabral-Tena, David A. Paz-García, Héctor Reyes-Bonilla, Sergio S. González-Peláez and Eduardo F. Balart* Abstract Sexual recruitment allows corals to maintain their populations through time, reach new habitats, and repopulate areas after an environmental or anthropogenic disturbance. This study aimed to estimate the spatio-temporal variation of sexual recruitment along two areas of the southwestern coast of the Gulf of California (Bahía de La Paz and Bahía de Loreto) considered to be sub- optimal for coral development (strong seasonality and variability of sea surface temperature, incidence of hurricanes, turbidity and nutrient concentration, and low Ωar). Recruitment data were compared to sea surface temperatures and with recruitment data from other sites in the Eastern Pacific that have less stressful environments. Terracotta tiles were used as collectors of larval coral propagules; tiles were immersed for three-month periods between August 2004 and September 2005. Higher recruitment was found during the warm season and coral recruits were found at almost all sites, including a vessel grounding area. Recruitment was higher in Bahía de La Paz (12.80± 29.57 ind m-2 yr-1) than in Bahía de Loreto (0.99± 1.49 ind m-2 yr-1). Coral recruits belonged to five coral genera in Bahía de la Paz, with Porites as the dominant genus (102 recruits), followed by Pocillopora (six), Psammocora (three), Pavona and Tubastraea (one each). At Bahía de Loreto, recruits of two coral genera were recorded: Porites (four) and Psammocora (one). -

For example, the recorded distribution ranges of Stylophora pistillata and Pocillopora damicornis, two of the most intensely researched experimental subjects, have been restricted dramatically due to confounding cryptic species. Micromussa is an Indo-Pacific genus that has been revised recently. The revision incorporated five new members and led to substantial range restriction of its type species and only initial member M. amakusensis to Japan and the Coral Triangle. Here, we report the presence of Micromussa amakusensis in Singapore using phylogenetic methods. Results: A total of seven M. amakusensis colonies were recorded via SCUBA surveys at four coral reef sites south of mainland Singapore, including two artificial seawall sites. Colonies were found encrusting on dead coral skeletons or bare rocky substrate between 2 and 5 m in depth. Morphological examination and phylogenetic analyses support the identity of these colonies as M. amakusensis, but the phylogeny reconstruction also shows that they form relatively distinct branches with unexpected lineage diversity. Conclusions: Our results and verified geographic records of M. amakusensis illustrate that, outside the type locality in Japan, the species can also be found widely in the South China Sea. -

Growth Rates of Eight Species of Scleractinian Corals in the Eastern Pacific (Costa Rica)

Guzman and Jorge Cortes ABSTRACT The annual linear skeletal growth rates for the following hermatypic corals was studied at thc non-upwelling area of Caiio Island, Costa Rica: Porites lobata Dana; Pavona varians Verrill; Pavona clavus Dana; Pavona gigantea Verrill; Gardineroseris planulata (Dana); Psam- mocora superficialis (Gardiner); Pocillopora elegans Dana; Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus). The seasonal growth rates of the main reef-building corals, P. lobata and P. damicornis, were measured and correlated with five environmental variables. Growth rates for P. varians and P. superficialis are presented for the first time. The species with growth rates similar to corals from non-upwelling areas, Porites lobata, Pocillopora damicornis, P. elegans, are the dominant species at Caiio Island, while the other species studied, Pavona clavus, P. gigantea and Gardineroseris planulata, have reduced growth rates compared to other areas. The results suggest that seasonal growth, which is greater during the dry season, may be affected by variations in available light, cloud cover, turbidity, salinity and reproductive time rather than temperature changes. Coral reefs grow under a variety of oceanographic and climatic conditions (e.g., upwelling and non-upwelling areas) along the Tropical Eastern Pacific coast, from Ecuador to Costa Rica. Thus, the community structure (coral zonation, abun- dance, and dominance) of these reefs differs markedly among localities, and the growth rates and morphology of colonial corals vary greatly in response to different environmental factors (Dodge and Vaisnys, 1975; Chappell, 1980; Hudson, 1981). -

This isolation has resulted in relatively low species diversity but comparatively high ende- mism. The dominant reef-building corals of the TEP are the Pocillopora corals, a ubiquitous Indo-Pacific genus commonly regarded as inferior reef-builder. In addition to being the dominant reef-builders in the TEP, the Pocilloporids have undergone a reproductive shift from internally brooding larvae through most of their Indo-Pacific range to free-spawning in the TEP. Using genetic data from the internally transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA gene cluster, we show here that this apparent reproductive shift coincides with interspecific hybridization among TEP Pocillopora species. We document a pattern of one-way gene flow into the main TEP reef builder P. damicornis from one or both of its TEP congeners — P. eydouxi and P. elegans. Our data provide preliminary evidence that trans-Pacific gene flow in P. damicornis between the Central and Eastern Pacific is restricted as well (FST = 0.419, P < 0.0001). -
