This checklist contains 73 species from 34 genera and 14 families of freshwater snails; 27 of these species (37%) are endemic to Iran. ZETTLER Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Seestr. 15, D-18119 Rostock, Germany Abstract During the EU Habitats Directive monitoring between 2008 and 2010 the ecological requirements of the gastropod species Anisus vorticulus (Troschel 1834) were investigated in 24 different waterbodies of northeast Germany. 117 sampling units were analyzed quantitatively. 45 of these units contained living individuals of the target species in abundances between 4 and 616 individuals m-2. More than 25.300 living individuals of accompanying freshwater mollusc species and about 9.400 empty shells were counted and determined to the species level. Altogether 47 species were identified. The benefit of enhanced knowledge on the ecological requirements was gained due to the wide range and high number of sampled habitats with both obviously convenient and inconvenient living conditions for A. vorticulus. In northeast Germany the amphibian zones of sheltered mesotrophic lake shores, swampy (lime) fens and peat holes which are sun exposed and have populations of any Chara species belong to the optimal, continuously and densely colonized biotopes. The cluster analysis emphasized that A. vorticulus was associated with a typical species composition, which can be named as “Anisus-vorticulus-community”. In compliance with that both the frequency of combined occurrence of species and their similarity in relative abundance are important. The following species belong to the “Anisus-vorticulus-community” in northeast Germany: Pisidium obtusale, Pisidium milium, Pisidium pseudosphaerium, Bithynia leachii, Stagnicola palustris, Valvata cristata, Bathyomphalus contortus, Bithynia tentaculata, Anisus vortex, Hippeutis complanatus, Gyraulus crista, Physa fontinalis, Segmentina nitida and Anisus vorticulus. -

In 1942 this species was found in the Czech Republic for the first time and a total of 155 species records were obtained by the end of 2005. Based on distribution data, we observed the gradual expansion of this gastropod not only in the Elbe Lowland, where its occurrence is concentrated, but also in other regions of the Czech Republic particularly between 2001 and 2005. Information on habitat, altitude and co-occurrence with other molluscs are presented. Ekológia (Bratislava), Vol. 33, No. 2, p. 101–115, 2014. In industrial areas, woodland ponds are refuges of biological diversity. The impact of environ- mental factors such as the physico-chemical properties of water, organic matter content in bottom sediments and various types of substratum on the occurrence of Hippeutis complanatus were asse- ssed. In Poland, it is considered to be a species with an established but unspecified risk, deserving the status of endangered species due to the decline of wetland environments. A Canonical Corre- spondence Analysis (CCA) revealed associations between the distribution patterns of freshwater snails species and the concentration of nitrates (NO3) and calcium (Ca) as well as pH and the organic matter content in the bottom sediments. Based on statistical relationships, results of study suggest that the kind of substratum (Typha latifolia remains, Phragmites australis remains, fallen leaves of waterside trees) has an impact on the occurrence of freshwater snails including Hippeutis complanatus for which the preferred substratum is the fallen leaves of waterside trees and sites with a high content of organic matter in bottom sediments. -

E-mail: [email protected] Recent studies on mating and copulation in pulmonates have provided a better understanding of a functional relationship between various aspects of their biology and have greatly advanced our knowledge of their reproductive behaviour. Here we describe the mating behaviour, copu- latory mechanics and genital anatomy of Hippeutis complanatus (Linnaeus, 1758), a Palaearc- tic freshwater pulmonates, and compare these results with those from Segmentina oelandica (Westerlund, 1885). In H. complanatus, the individual that initiates mating mounts the shell of the partner and crawls over its basal side to position itself at the shell aperture for intromis- sion. The copulatory connection is achieved by the preputium and its musculo-glandular ap- pendage (preputial organ) that attaches to the shell of the partner. Hippeutis complanatus and S. oelandica share a number of common traits in genital morphology and mating behaviour, most notably the unilateral copulation and the use of the preputial organ as a holdfast. These species also show some significant differences: the opposite orientation of the partners, chemi- cal stimulation in S. -
An Annotated List of the Non-Marine Mollusca of Britain and Ireland
JOURNAL OF CONCHOLOGY (2005), VOL.38, NO .6 607 AN ANNOTATED LIST OF THE NON-MARINE MOLLUSCA OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND ROY ANDERSON1 Abstract An updated nomenclatural list of the non-marine Mollusca of the Britain and Ireland is provided. This updates all previous lists and revises nomenclature and classification in the context of recent changes and of new European lists, including the Clecom List. Cases are made for the usage of names in the List by means of annotations. The List will provide a basis for the future census and cataloguing of the fauna of Britain and Ireland. INTRODUCTION There has been a need for some time to modernise the list of non-marine Mollusca for Britain and Ireland, a subject last visited in this journal in 1976 (Waldén 1976; Kerney 1976). Many of the changes that have appeared in the literature since then are contentious and Kerney (1999) chose not to incorporate many of these into the latest atlas of non-marine Mollusca of Britain and Ireland. A new European List, the Clecom List (Falkner et al. 2001) has now appeared and it seems appropriate to examine in more detail constituent changes which might affect the British and Irish faunas. This is given additional urgency by the inception of a new census of the molluscs of Britain and Ireland by the Conchological Society. Recorders in the Society are aware of many of the proposed changes but unable to implement them without general agreement. In addition, many field malacologists make use of the recording package RECORDER, a recent form of which has been developed jointly by JNCC and the National Biodiversity Network in the United Kingdom. -

An annotated check-list of the freshwater molluscs of Germany. – By considering the international code of zoological nomenclature, a critical annotated check-list for the freshwater molluscs of Germany is introduced, considering the currently used check-lists of GLÖER & MEIER- BROOK (1998), FALKNER et al. (2001), GLÖER (2002) und GLÖER & MEIER-BROOK (2003). As a basis of this list we used the CLECOM list (FALKNER & al. 2001), and the 1st update of the CLECOM list (BANK et al. 2001). In total 66 taxa are discussed or annotated. Meanwhile 15 taxa where deleted, because we do not think that these are distinct species or subspecies. This concerns particularly the subspecies of the Unionidae, which are not to be determinated seriously without the knowledge of the sampling site. In 5 taxa we changed the names given in the CLECOM list by established names, these are: Bithynia transsilvanica = B. troschelii, Anisus septemgyratus = A. leucostoma, A. calculiformis = A. septemgyratus, Ferrissia clessiniana = F. wautieri, Mytilopsis leucophaeata = Congeria leucophaeata. Finally we gave two subspecies the rank of species: Pisidum ponderosum and Pisidium crassum. Kurzfassung. Unter Beachtung der internationalen Regeln für die zoologische Nomenklatur, wird auf der Basis der derzeit verwendeten systematischen Listen von GLÖER & MEIER-BROOK (1998), FALKNER et al. (2001), GLÖER (2002) und GLÖER & MEIER-BROOK (2003) eine kritische, kommentierte Artenliste für die Süßwassermollusken in Deutschland vorgestellt. -

President Peter has very kindly invited me to use his editorial slot to write a piece encouraging more members to play an active part in the Society. A few stalwarts already give very generously of their time and energy, and we are enormously grateful to them; but it would be good to spread the load and get more done. Some of you, I know, don’t have enough time - at least at the moment - and others can’t for other reasons; but if you do have time and energy, please don’t be put off by any reluctance to get involved, or any feeling that you don’t know enough. There are many ways in which you can take part – coming to meetings, and especially field meetings; sending in records; helping with the records databases and the website; writing for our publications; joining Council; and taking on one of the officers’ jobs. None of us know enough when we start; but there’s a lot of experience and knowledge in the Society, and fellow members are enormously helpful in sharing what they know. Apart from learning a lot, you will also make new friends, and have a lot of fun. The Society plays an important part in contributing to our knowledge of molluscs and to mollusc conservation, especially through the database on the National Biodiversity Network Gateway (www.nbn.org.uk); and is important also in building positive links between professional and amateur conchologists.
