RESEARCH 71 PREFERENCE OF QUINOA MOTH: Eurysacca melanocampta MEYRICK (LEPIDOPTERA: GELECHIIDAE) FOR TWO VARIETIES OF QUINOA (Chenopodium quinoa WILLD.) IN OLFACTOMETRY ASSAYS Juan F. Costa1*, Walter Cosio1, Maritza Cardenas1, Erick Yábar1, and Ernesto Gianoli2 ABSTRACT Insects are attracted to plants by visual and olfactory cues. The quinoa moth, Eurysacca melanocampta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is the main insect pest of the quinoa crop, Chenopodium quinoa Willd. (Chenopodiales: Chenopodiaceae), in the southern Peruvian Andes, causing grain yield losses. The aim of this study was to investigate the behavioural response of adult quinoa moths to olfactory stimuli. Specifically, the objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the capacity of E. melanocampta adults of searching for quinoa plants using plant olfactory cues; 2) to determine the preference of E. melanocampta females for the odours derived from two varieties of quinoa: Amarilla de Marangani and Blanca de Junín; and 3) to assess the attraction of male quinoa moths to E. melanocampta females and the host plant in olfactometric bioassays. Adults preferred quinoa plant odour sources in choice tests when distilled water was used as a control (P < 0.0001). Females were more attracted to the Blanca de Junín variety than to Amarilla de Marangani variety (P < 0.05). Males were more attracted to the odour derived from females than to the volatile compounds from plants (both varieties) or to the odour blend derived from plants plus females together. The level of attraction of males towards females is negatively affected by the presence of the quinoa plants. Key words: attraction, Chenopodiaceae, Gelechiidae, searching, olfactometry, quinoa. -

Concluding Remarks Acknowledgments Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketch Summary In this chapter we describe the current state of tropical insect chemical ecology in Latin America with the aim of stimulating the use of this important tool for future generations of technicians and professionals workers in insect pest management. Sex pheromones of tropical insectsUNESCO that have been identified to– date EOLSS are mainly used for detection and population monitoring. Another strategy termed mating disruption, has been used in the control of the tomato pinworm, Keiferia lycopersicella, and the Guatemalan potato moth, Tecia solanivora. Research into other semiochemicals such as kairomones in tropical insects SAMPLErevealed evidence of their presence CHAPTERS in coleopterans. However, additional studies are necessary in order to confirm these laboratory results. In fruit flies, the isolation of potential attractants (kairomone) from Spondias mombin for Anastrepha obliqua was reported recently. The use of semiochemicals to control insect pests is advantageous in that it is safe for humans and the environment. The extensive use of these kinds of technologies could be very important in reducing the use of pesticides with the consequent reduction in the level of contamination caused by these products around the world. -

The fields at low altitudes have the potential to produce higher yields than those in the highlands. This study investigated the occurrence of insect pests and the natural enemies of quinoa in a traditional production zone, San Lorenzo (in the Andes), and in two new zones at lower altitudes, La Molina (on the coast) and Majes (in the “Maritime Yunga” ecoregion), by plant sampling and pitfall trapping. Our data indicated that the pest pressure in quinoa was higher at lower elevations than in the highlands. The major insect pest infesting quinoa at high densities in San Lorenzo was Eurysacca melanocampta; in La Molina, the major pests were E. melanocampta, Macrosiphum euphorbiae and Liriomyza huidobrensis; and in Majes, Frankliniella occidentalis was the most abundant pest. -

This field study investigated the impact of four insecticides (cypermethrin, imidacloprid, teflubenzuron and emamectin benzoate) on insect pests of quinoa and their side effects on the arthropod community at the coastal level of Peru, by analysing the species composition, species diversity and population density. Revista de la Carrera de Ingeniería Agronómica - UMSA Primer reporte de la cría masiva de Eurysacca melanocampta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) plaga clave del cultivo de la Quinua First report of the massive crops of Eurysacca melanocampta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) key plague of Quinua cultivation Miguel Barrantes, Reinaldo Quispe, Raúl Saravia y Alejandro Bonifacio RESUMEN La cría de insectos es una herramienta fundamental para la búsqueda de alternativas para el manejo de plaga, no hay reportes de la cría masiva de Eurysacca melanocampta, principal plaga del cultivo de quinua en Bolivia. Con el objetivo de multiplicar E. melanocampta bajo condiciones controladas se colectó larvas de polilla en parcelas de quinua de 14 comunidades del Altiplano Centro y Norte de Bolivia (La Paz y Oruro), durante dos campañas agrícolas 2012-2013 y 2013-2014. Material biológico que fue trasladado al Laboratorio de Entomología del Centro K´iphak´iphani (Fundación PROINPA -Viacha, La Paz), para su cría hasta la emergencia de adultos. En la primera campaña agrícola, se evaluó la preferencia de ovoposición de la polilla en tres superficies (papel sabana, grano quinua y planta quinua) y dos condiciones de laboratorio (1=25°C y 70%HR, y 2=20°C y 50%HR). En la segunda campaña agrícola, se identificó taxonómicamente las polillas obtenidas en la cría, posteriormente se evaluó dos ambientes de cría (1=laboratorio: 25°C y 70%HR, 2=invernadero: 32°C y 54% HR). En cada ambiente, se liberó 200 polillas en una proporción sexual 1:1, en cada ambiente. -

Müller Abstract A checklist of 67 Israeli species of families Oecophoridae (17 species), Autostichidae (16), Depressariidae (25), Cryptolechiidae (3), and Lecithoceridae (6) is presented. The checklist is based on material collected by the authors in 2003 in Israel and existing published records. Eight species are new records for the fauna of Israel: Dasycera intermediella Stainton, 1867, Batia internella Jäckh, 1972, Carcina quercana (Fabricius, 1775), Oegoconia deauratella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Oegoconia caradjai Popescu-Gorj & Caˇpus¸e, 1965, Agonopterix ferulae (Zeller, 1847), Agonopterix kaekeritziana (Linnaeus, 1767) and Lecithocera anatolica Gozmány, 1978. Two new combinations are proposed: Epicallima einsleri (Amsel, 1934), comb.
