Concluding Remarks Acknowledgments Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketch Summary In this chapter we describe the current state of tropical insect chemical ecology in Latin America with the aim of stimulating the use of this important tool for future generations of technicians and professionals workers in insect pest management. Sex pheromones of tropical insectsUNESCO that have been identified to– date EOLSS are mainly used for detection and population monitoring. Another strategy termed mating disruption, has been used in the control of the tomato pinworm, Keiferia lycopersicella, and the Guatemalan potato moth, Tecia solanivora. Research into other semiochemicals such as kairomones in tropical insects SAMPLErevealed evidence of their presence CHAPTERS in coleopterans. However, additional studies are necessary in order to confirm these laboratory results. In fruit flies, the isolation of potential attractants (kairomone) from Spondias mombin for Anastrepha obliqua was reported recently. The use of semiochemicals to control insect pests is advantageous in that it is safe for humans and the environment. The extensive use of these kinds of technologies could be very important in reducing the use of pesticides with the consequent reduction in the level of contamination caused by these products around the world. -

Selectivity of insecticides with and without mineral oil to Brachygastra lecheguana (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), a predator ofTuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) G. L. D. Leite, M. Picango, R. N. C. Dose-response regression limes were estimated for adults of Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) exposed to the insecticides abamectin, cartap, phentoate, and permethrin with or without 0.5% (v/v) mineral oil. Insects were exposed to treated tomato leaves and mortality was evaluated after24 hours. The estimated LC^s and LC^s forB. lecheguana were compared to estimated LC^s and LC^s previously obtained for larvae ofTuta (= Scrobipalpuloid.es) absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), the main tomato pest in much of South America. The most selective insecticides favor- ing the predator were abamectin and cartap with differential selectivity indexes (LC^ predator, LC^ pest) of 9.5 and 8.6, respectively. The worst differential selectivity was obtained with permethrin. Mineral oil increased selectivity in favor of the predator when in mixture with abamectin, permethrin, and cartap, but had a strong negative effect on phentoate selectivity. Las curvas de regresión para respuesta a dosis fueron estimadas en adultos de Brachygastra lecheguana (Latreille) (Hymenoptera:Vespidae) expuestos a los insecticidas abamectina, cartap, fentoato, y permetrina, con y sin aceite mineral al 0.5% (v/v). Los insectos fueron expuestos a hojas de tomate aplicadas con los insecticidas, y la mortalidad fue evaluada después de 24 horas. Los valores estimados para LC5()s y LC^s para B.lecheguana fueron comparados a los valores LC5()s y LC^s obtenidos previamente para las larvas de Tufa (= Scrobipalpuloides) absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), la princi- pal plaga del tomate en la mayor parte de Sur América. -

We here review pheromone control strategies for species-specific and environmentally safe management of the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae). This insect pest originates from South America and is now considered to be one of the most damaging invasive pests of tomatoes in the Mediterranean Basin countries of Europe and North Africa. After presenting the general principles of sex pheromone-based control strategies, we describe strategies used to control T. absoluta including pest detection, population monitoring, mass annihilation and mating disruption techniques. Vilela2 ABSTRAC Field Trapping of the Tomato Worm, Scrobipa/puloides absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Using Virgin Females Studies were carried out on catches of Scrobipalpuloides absoluta (Tvleyrick) males using traps baited with virgin females as a source of natural sex pheromone. Six different traps heights, six distinct colors and seven traps desigu were evaluated. It was found that the height of trap placement had an influence on male capture, and that the optimum height varied according to the g -owth stage of the plant. The design of the trap also influenced the efficiency of capture. The modeis "PVC 200" and Pherocon 1CR were the most efficient for the capture ofmale S. absoluta. The data on trap colar suggested that dark colors provided higher catches than lighter colored traps. KEY WORDS: Insecta, pheromone, chemical ecology, insect monitoring, traps. RESUMO Estudos foram conduzidos sobre a captura de machos de Scrobipalpuloides absoluta (Meynck) em armadilhas contendo fêmeas virgens, como fonte de feromônio natural. Foram avaliadas seis diferentes alturas de instalação, seis cores distintas e sete modelos de armadilhas, em plantios de tomate estaqueado. Constatou-se que houve influência da altura de instalação das armadilhas sobre a captura de machos e que a altura mais adequada variou segundo o estágio de crescimento das plantas. O modelo das armadilhas também exerceu influência sobre a eficiência de captura. Os modelos "PVC 200" e Pherocon 1 CR foram os mais eficientes para a captura de machos de S.
