LIMITATIONS ON COPYRIGHT PROTECTION FOR FORMAT IDEAS IN REALITY TELEVISION PROGRAMMING I. INTRODUCTION Television networks constantly compete to find and produce the next big hit. The shifting economic landscape forged by increasing competition between and among ever-proliferating media platforms, however, places extreme pressure on network profit margins. Fully scripted hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies have become increasingly costly, while delivering diminishing ratings in the key demographics most valued by advertisers. It therefore is not surprising that the reality television genre has become a staple of network schedules. New reality shows are churned out each season.1 The main appeal, of course, is that they are cheap to make and addictive to watch. Networks are able to take ordinary people and create a show without having to pay “A-list” actor salaries and hire teams of writers.2 Many of the most popular programs are unscripted, meaning lower cost for higher ratings. Even where the ratings are flat, such shows are capable of generating higher profit margins through advertising directed to large groups of more readily targeted viewers.

The 2011 Cruise Industry Source Book profiles CLIA’s 25 member cruise lines and contains general information about CLIA, its history and purpose. Each cruise line profile features the names of company principals and spokespersons, with phone numbers and e-mail addresses. Also included are descriptions of each line’s history and philosophy, as well as the destinations served by each company. The Source Book lists CLIA member-line ships in two ways: by individual company and by ship. In addition, it provides the names and phone numbers of key contacts at the other North American cruise industry associations – the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association, the North West CruiseShip Association and the Alaska Cruise Association.     Hallmark Collection 20000 Leagues Under The Sea In 1867, Professor Aronnax (Richard Crenna), renowned marine biologist, is summoned by the Navy to identify the mysterious sea creature that disabled the steamship Scotia in die North Atlantic. He agrees to undertake an expedition. His daughter, Sophie (Julie Cox), also a brilliant marine biologist, disguised as a man, comes as her father's assistant. On ship, she becomes smitten with harpoonist Ned Land (Paul Gross). At night, the shimmering green sea beast is spotted. When Ned tries to spear it, the monster rams their ship. Aronnax, Sophie and Ned are thrown overboard. Floundering, they cling to a huge hull which rises from the deeps. The "sea beast" is a sleek futuristic submarine, commanded by Captain Nemo. He invites them aboard, but warns if they enter the Nautilus, they will not be free to leave. The submarine is a marvel of technology, with electricity harnessed for use on board. Nemo provides his guests diving suits equipped with oxygen for exploration of die dazzling undersea world. Aronnax learns Nemo was destined to be the king to lead his people into the modern scientific world, but was forced from his land by enemies. Now, he is hoping to halt shipping between the United States and Europe as a way of regaining his throne. Ned makes several escape attempts, but Sophie and her father find the opportunities for scientific study too great to leave. Sophie rejects Nemo's marriage proposal calling him selfish. He shows his generosity, revealing gold bars he will drop near his former country for pearl divers to find and use to help the unfortunate.

West High School, launches a ping-pong ball with a robot that she and her robotics class partner, Carli Stowe, built for a class project. This program, among others, has earned W.F. West High School the title of a state “Lighthouse School” for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Allen, who inished her project last week, demonstrated how her robot could pick up a ping-pong ball, move to the launching pad, then shoot the ball six feet. If all of those requirements were met the student would get an ‘A’ on the project. White said about 1/3 of the class completely met the requirements of the project.
