Cheek1 Key words Abstract Two new paniculate species of Nepenthes, N. halmahera and N. weda, both allied to N. danseri Jebb & Cheek, are described respectively from lowland and lower montane forest on ultramafic substrate. Nepenthes weda character state appears to be unique in the genus due to the adaxial tepal surfaces which in the distal portion are hairy and lack critically endangered nectar glands. This species is also unique among paniculate members of the genus in its forward-facing, concave mining subapical lid appendage. Both species are currently only known from the Weda Bay Nickel Project concession area ultramafic in Halmahera, Indonesia, and are assessed as Critically Endangered using the 2012 IUCN standard. Two character Weda Bay Nickel Project states are formally described and named for the first time in Nepenthes: nanophyll rosettes and multiseriate fringed pitcher wings. Stage-related heteromorphy in lid appendages is documented for the first time in the genus. Keys to the species of Nepenthes of Halmahera, and to the paniculate species of SE Asia are presented. ANDAYA U:-fIVERSITY OF From an outsider's viewpoint, the diversity of language and ethnic groups scattered through numerous small and often inaccessible islands in Maluku might appear to be a major deterrent to economic contact between communities. But it was because these groups lived on small islands or in forested larger islands with limited arable land that trade with their neighbors was an economic necessity Distrust of strangers was often overcome through marriage or trade partnerships. However, the most . effective justification for cooperation among groups in Maluku was adherence to common origin myths which established familial links with societies as far west as Butung and as far east as the Papuan islands. I The records of the Dutch East India Company housed in the State Archives in The Hague offer a useful glimpse of the operation of local trading networks in Maluku. Although concerned principally with their own economic activities in the area, the Dutch found it necessary to understand something of the nature of Indigenous exchange relationships. The information, however, never formed the basis for a report, but is scattered in various documents in the form of observations or personal experiences of Dutch officials. From these pieces of information it is possible to reconstruct some of the complexity of the exchange in MaJuku in these centuries and to observe the dynamism of local groups in adapting to new economic developments in the area. In addition to the Malukans, there were two foreign groups who were essential to the successful integration of the local trade networks: the and the Chinese. -

An overview of Nepenthes in the Philippines is presented. Four new species, Nepenthes extincta sp. nov., N. kitanglad sp. nov., N. kurata sp. nov. and N. leyte sp. nov. are described and illustrated from the Philippines and placed in the Nepenthes alata group. An updated circumscription and key to the species of the group is provided. Delimitation and comparison with the Regiae group is given. All four of the newly described species are assessed as threatened using the International Union for the Conservation of Nature 2012 standard, and one, N. extincta sp. nov. is considered likely to be already extinct due to open-cast mining. Rainwater 3 The family Nepenthaceae (Tropical Pitcher Plants or Monkey Cups), consists of a single genus (Nepenthes) with >140 species (CHEEK & JEBB, 2013) occurring in southern China, India (Assam), Sri Lanka, Indochina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, northern Australia (Queensland), and eastern Madagascar (JUNIPER ET AL., 1989; MCPHERSON, 2009). Nepenthaceae are characterized by liquid-containing pitchers suspended by tendrils growing from the leaf midrib (CLARKE, 2002). Pitcher plants obtain nutrients (especially nitrogen and phosphorous) by trapping and digesting invertebrate prey in the pitcher (ETKIN, 2008). Digestion of prey is accomplished by the combined action of enzymes and symbiotic insect larvae (flies, midges, and mosquitos) adapted to the low pH of the pitcher environment (JUNIPER ET AL., 1989; CLARKE, 2002; ETKIN, 2008). In contrast to many regions, the Nepenthaceae of Indochina (Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam) have received little scientific attention (MEY, 2010) and in particular, only a few reports on the ethnobotany of these plants are available from the region. According to VIDAL (1959) Nepenthes spp. is used to treat eruptive fever in Laos and in Cambodia, MEY (2010) stated that N. mirabilis is incorporated into medicines, the leaves and roots of N. holdenii are used in decoctions to treat fever and pain, and the roots of N. bokorensis are boiled and administered to pregnant women to alleviate pain. These reports notwithstanding, the general paucity of ethnobotanical information on Nepenthes in Indochina is somewhat surprising given the cultural, material, and medicinal significance of these plants elsewhere (ETKIN [2008] and references therein). -

History of the Moluccan's Cloves as a Global Commodity � Hatib Abdul Kadir1 Abstract This paper focuses on the history of spice trade in Moluccas. Using two main approaches of firstly, Braudel, I intend to examine the histoty of spice trade in Moluccas in the 16th century in relation with the changing of the structure of economy that affected the social and political relations of the Moluccans. Secondly, applying Wallerstein approaches, I find out that trading activities from the 16th century until today have created a wide gap between post-colonial Moluccas and the Europeans. To conclude, I argue that economic activities have always been accompanied by forcing political power, such as monopoly and military power. Consequently, they have created unequal relations between the state and society. Keywords: Moluccas, Spice, Braudel, Wallerstein, State-society Relations A. Introduction My research is about the clove trade as a long distance commodity exchange in the sixteenth century. I choose to look at a limited timeframe in order to see the Moluccan trade in connection with Fernand Braudel's work. Braudel focuses on a global trade in the period that centered in the Mediterranean during the sixteenth century. This paper examines the kind of social changes occurring in Moluccan society when cloves became a highly valued commodity in trade with the Portuguese during the sixteenth century. The aim of the paper is to see how the patterns of this trade represent the Portuguese as the 'core' and the Moluccans as the 'periphery.' By using Braudel's approach, the aims of the paper are to explore the global history of society that is connected through unfair relations or colonization. -

PT WEDA BAY NICKEL ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING PLAN Nickel and Cobalt Mining and Processing Project Central Halmahera and East Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province, Indonesia February 2009 FOREWORD PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN) is proposing to develop a nickel and cobalt mine and a processing plant in Central Halmahera, North Maluku. WBN is the holder of a Seventh Generation Contract of Work (CoW) for nickel mining in an area currently reduced from 120,500 ha to 54,874 ha in Central Halmahera and East Halmahera, acknowledged by the Government of Indonesia in Presidential Decree No. B.53/PRESS/1/1998 dated 19 January 1998. WBN intends to begin mining activities and processing nickel and cobalt ores, a project that covers all stages of activities including the construction of all the required facilities and infrastructure. This study is aimed at preventing and mitigating potential negative impacts and to optimize the positive impacts. As a follow up to the Decission of the Head of Environmental Impact Control Agency of North Maluku No. 660-1/ 259 dated 20 June 2008 on the Legalization of the Terms of Reference of the Environment Impact Assessment (KA ANDAL) of nickel and cobalt mining and processing in Central Halmahera and East Halmahera Regency. WBN intends to compile the Environmental Monitoring Plan document in compliance with the Regulation of Minister of Environmental No. 8/2006 regarding Guidelines for the Compilation of the Environment Impact Assessment Study and in reference to Decree of Minister of Mining No. 1457K/28/MEM/2000 regarding Technical Guidelines for Environmental Management in Mining and Energy Sectors. -

ABSTRACT Nepenthes mirabilis (Lour.) Druce is a species of pitcher plants which captures insects for additional nutrients, enhancing its survival at a place with low nutritional value. With a bright colour and alluring nectar, insects are attracted to and trapped inside pitchers with slippery walls. These preys are soon digested by the juice released by the pitcher gland. In contrast to the unique carnivorous behavior though, it is interesting that mosquito is a rare species that can live within the pitchers and lay eggs on the digestive juice without being digested. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN A comparative UHPLC‑Q/ TOF–MS‑based eco‑metabolomics approach reveals temperature adaptation of four Nepenthes species Changi Wong1, Yee Soon Ling2, Julia Lih Suan Wee3, Aazani Mujahid4 & Moritz Müller1* Nepenthes, as the largest family of carnivorous plants, is found with an extensive geographical distribution throughout the Malay Archipelago, specifcally in Borneo, Philippines, and Sumatra. Highland species are able to tolerate cold stress and lowland species heat stress. Our current understanding on the adaptation or survival mechanisms acquired by the diferent Nepenthes species to their climatic conditions at the phytochemical level is, however, limited. In this study, we applied an eco‑metabolomics approach to identify temperature stressed individual metabolic fngerprints of four Nepenthes species: the lowlanders N. ampullaria, N. rafesiana and N. northiana, and the highlander N. minima. We hypothesized that distinct metabolite regulation patterns exist between the Nepenthes species due to their adaptation towards diferent geographical and altitudinal distribution. Our results revealed not only distinct temperature stress induced metabolite fngerprints for each Nepenthes species, but also shared metabolic response and adaptation strategies. The interspecifc responses and adaptation of N. rafesiana and N. northiana likely refected their natural habitat niches. Moreover, our study also indicates the potential of lowlanders, especially N. ampullaria and N. rafesiana, to produce metabolites needed to deal with increased temperatures, ofering hope for the plant genus and future adaption in times of changing climate. Nepenthes (N.), the sole genus under the family Nepenthaceae, is one of the largest families of carnivorous plants, with an extensive geographical distribution across the Malay Archipelago, specifcally in Borneo, Philippines, and Sumatra. -

Alatae) is described and assessed as Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct) from Luzon, Philippines and appears unrecorded in 110 years. The spectacular, large, narrowly funnel-shaped upper pitchers, lids with recurved basal, and filiform apical appendages, unlike any other species in the Philippines, closely resemble those of N. maxima (Sect. Regiae) of Sulawesi-New Guinea, likely due to convergent evolution. Following recent phylogenomic analysis, sect. Alatae is divided into two, Sect. Alatae sensu stricto of Luzon to Sibuyan (including N. maximoides), and Sect. Micramphorae, expanded and recircumscribed to encompass those species of the southern Visayas, and Mindanao. A key is provided to the six species now recognised in the narrowly recircumscribed Sect. Alatae. The number of Nepenthes species recorded from Luzon has increased from two in 2001, to eight in 2020, all but one of which are endemic to that island, and four of which appear to be point endemics.
