The show is critically renowned for its writing by Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews, which details the crazy lives of the parochial house inhabitants: Father Ted Crilly (Dermot Morgan), Father Dougal McGuire (Ardal O'Hanlon), Father Jack Hackett (Frank Kelly), and Mrs Doyle (Pauline McLynn).

  • The Ladykillers Makes Its North American Premiere at the Shaw Festival - Macabre Comedy Caper Begins Previews June 11 –
IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Ladykillers makes its North American premiere at the Shaw Festival - Macabre comedy caper begins previews June 11 – Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON (June 10, 2019) — After taking London’s West End by storm, comedy thriller The Ladykillers makes its North American premiere under the direction of Artistic Director Tim Carroll. The Shaw Festival’s production of Graham Linehan’s stage adaptation – based on one of the best-loved British films of all time – begins previews tomorrow at the Festival Theatre. Set in 1950s London, a motley crew of criminals led by Professor Marcus (Damien Atkins) occupy the upstairs room of Mrs. Wilberforce's (Chick Reid) rickety Victorian house. Posing as a classical string quartet, the gang plan the greatest act of thievery ever, but things soon start to get complicated. Full of gags, grim humour and hijinks, The Ladykillers also features the talents of Kristopher Bowman, Fiona Byrne, Martin Happer, Claire Jullien, Andrew Lawrie, Ric Reid and Steven Sutcliffe. Designer Judith Bowden creates a cramped jungle-gym of a Victorian house in the north London district of King’s Cross and costumes infused with influences from the 1950s, film noir and Teddy Boy style. Enhancing and heightening the action and tension is lighting by Kevin Lamotte and original music by Paul Sportelli. This production also features fight direction by John Stead. This North American premiere of The Ladykillers by Graham Linehan, from the motion picture screenplay by William Rose, is presented by special arrangement with Studiocanal, in association with Fiery Angel, London. The Ladykillers is on stage at the Festival Theatre (10 Queen’s Parade, Niagara-on-the-Lake) from June 11 to October 12 (eligible for review beginning July 4).

  • Free, M. (2015) Don't Tell Me I'm Still...Pdf
Pre-publication version. This is scheduled for publication in the journal Critical Studies in Television, Vol. 10, Summer 2015. It should be identical to the published version, but there may be minor adjustments (typographical errors etc.) prior to publication. Title: ‘Don’t tell me I’m still on that feckin’ island’: Migration, Masculinity, British Television and Irish Popular Culture in the Work of Graham Linehan Author: Marcus Free, Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick – [email protected] Abstract The article examines how, through such means as interviews and DVD commentaries, television situation comedy writer Graham Linehan has discursively elaborated a distinctly migrant masculine identity as an Irish writer in London. It highlights his stress on how the working environment of British broadcasting and the tutelage of senior British broadcasters facilitated the satirical vision of Ireland in Father Ted. It focuses on the gendering of his narrative of becoming in London and how his suggestion of interplays between specific autobiographical details and his dramatic work have fuelled his public profile as a migrant Irish writer. Graham Linehan has written and co-written several situation comedies for British television, including Father Ted (with Arthur Mathews – Channel 4, 1995-98); Black Books (with Dylan Moran – Channel 4, 2000-2004 (first series only)); The IT Crowd (Channel 4, 2006- 13); and Count Arthur Strong (with Steve Delaney – BBC, 2013-15). Unusually, for a television writer, he has also developed a significant public profile in the UK and Ireland through his extensive interviews and uses of social media. Linehan migrated from Dublin to London in 1990 and his own account of his development as a writer stresses his formation through the intersection of Irish, British and American influences.

THE DIVINE COMEDY – A BIOGRAPHY The Divine Comedy is Neil Hannon. Over the years, the name has encompassed other musicians, but the driving force of the band and its main (sometimes only!) member has always been Neil Hannon. He chose the name 'The Divine Comedy' aged 18, almost at random. He and two Enniskillen school friends needed a new name for their band and Neil spotted a copy of Dante’s epic poem on the family bookshelf. It stuck, and a year later it was the name under which the trio signed to Irish run indie Setanta Records. They left Northern Ireland, moved into a squat in London, released a mini-album, 1990’s REM/Ride influenced 'Fanfare for the Comic Muse' and ‘91’s ‘Europop’ E.P. then split up. Neil's bandmates went to university and Neil returned home. Retaining the name, he spent 18 months living in his parents’ attic, sleeping during the day, watching old movies and writing songs at night. Influenced by everything from Jacques Brel, Scott Walker and Michael Nyman to "A Room with a View", Wordsworth, and Mr Benn, these songs eventually evolved into two albums. The first of these, ‘Liberation’ was released in 1993. Totally different to anything else around, and indeed his previous work, he now considers it his first album proper. The press adored it. The NME described it as "..an array of seductive yarns.. glorious, gleeful tunesmanship." Dave Cavanagh, writing in Select said "...one of the bountiful, overflowing joys of the year. Any year." Melody Maker described it as "An album that could make any listener want to stumble up to him and proclaim ‘Neil, you’re a genius’".
