The 6Th Annual Fantasy Football League Draft Will Be Held on Saturday, August 12
TO ALL FFL OWNERS: The 6th annual Fantasy Football League Draft will be held on Saturday, August 12. The NFC will draft at 7:00 and the AFC will draft at 8:30. If you don't know what conference you are in then look at the standings from last year. It will be held at the my house in Loves Park, 650 Sydney Avenue. If you can not attend, please contact me as soon as possible so that other arrangements can be made. We have made a number of rule changes this year so be sure to read through the rules that are contained here. The highlights are a reduction in rosters to 14 players per team, an increase in the entry fee to $25, only 4 teams making the playoffs from each conference, and expansion. We are adding 4 new teams to the league, two in each conference. The expansion teams throw a couple of new wrinkles into the league. First, we will have to realign the divisions in each conference; we are going to 3 divisions of 4 teams each. Also, there will be an additional expansion draft after all teams have protected their players. More later. If you have any questions or concerns, please call me at (319) 425-5421. Aaron FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE TEAMS: Each team consists of 14 players. The players have one of four positions: quarterback, running back, receiver, and kicker. Each team will also have an injured reserve list that they may place a player on if the player is put on the injured reserve list by his NFL team. -
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 5 (2004) a SAFETY ANALYSIS
THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 26, No. 5 (2004) A SAFETY ANALYSIS By Gary Selby The Safety: One of football’s rarest scoring plays. The Digest of Rules in the NFL’s Record and Fact Book describes a safety as: “Two points are scored for the opposing team when the ball is dead on or behind a team’s own goal line if the impetus came from a player on that team.” Emphasis on impetus. A fairly straightforward definition. Most fans know a safety when they see one, despite there being numerous types. But when they happen, its like an electric shock. The responses range from “What? So what’s the score now?” to “Better get another beer and some pretzels. This thing’s getting complicated.” But I wanted to look a little deeper. How many safeties have there been in the NFL? What are the types? What is their effect on a game? Can it be measured? I had never seen an analysis of the safety, so I decided to do one myself. My interest was sparked while reviewing files for the PFRA’s Linescore Project. In a 1965 Giants-Cardinals game I saw the following entry for an individual score: StL – Team Safety. Team Safety? Huh? Did the entire Cardinals defense tackle Tucker Fredrickson in his end zone? After a trip to the library revealed the answer, I kept thinking about how devastating a safety can be. You give up possession, give your opponent 2 points, and then you have to punt the ball from your own 20, giving your opponent good, if not excellent, field position. -

THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 27, No. 5 (2005) GROSSHANDLER LISTS Dr. Stanley Grosshandler, who passed away in January, 2003, was an anesthesiologist in Raleigh, NC -- and a sports researcher in his spare time. A member of both the PFRA and SABR, Grosshandler wrote chapters in the books Total Football and Total Baseball and was an authority on two-sport stars. GROSSHANDLER LIST #1 NFL PLAYERS AND THE BASEBALL TEAMS THAT DRAFTED THEM Major League Baseball’s draft didn’t start until 1965, so the list below doesn’t include players like Sammy Baugh, who was signed to the St. Louis Cardinals’ farm system in the 1930s.
