  • Rob’S Album of the Week: the Slackers
Rob’s Album Of The Week: The Slackers Ska is a genre that has been in a bit of a crossroads over the past few years. It’s kind of in the same position punk rock was in the late 2000s, out of the limelight but still around somewhat, and there’s a dedicated fan base still packing venues to dance to the rhythms. For 25 years The Slackers from New York City have been keeping two tone alive and they’re not going away. Furthering the latter is their brand new self-titled album coming out on February 19. Bringing that trademark jazzy spin on the genre, Vic Ruggiero and crew haven’t slowed down at all since coming up from Manhattan in 1991. The groovy sextet from The Big Apple incorporates a bit of psychedelia and garage rock in their latest release. Each track brings something different; a few are heavy with the horns while others have the keys as the base of the entire song. It definitely makes the experience a stimulating one. It’ll be difficult to grow bored while diving to this one. Ruggiero also brings that laid back soul he’s known for to keep everything timeless. Is Ska due for the 4th Wave? Only time will tell. It’ll take a bunch of kids rejuvenating the rude boy ideal and that’s only a small part of what it’ll take. A big part of this weekly review are my top tracks off of the Album Of The Week. Open wide, take a bite, repeat and get your fill.

  • Atom and His Package Possibly the Smallest Band on the List, Atom & His
Atom and His Package Possibly the smallest band on the list, Atom & his Package consists of Adam Goren (Atom) and his package (a Yamaha music sequencer) make funny punk songs utilising many of of the package's hundreds of instruments about the metric system, the lead singer of Judas Priest and what Jewish people do on Christmas. Now moved on to other projects, Atom will remain the person who told the world Anarchy Means That I Litter, The Palestinians Are Not the Same Thing as the Rebel Alliance Jackass, and If You Own The Washington Redskins, You're a ****. Ghost Mice With only two members in this folk/punk band their voices and their music can be heard along with such pride. This band is one of the greatest to come out of the scene because of their abrasive acoustic style. The band consists of a male guitarist (I don't know his name) and Hannah who plays the violin. They are successful and very well should be because it's hard to 99 when you have such little to work with. This band is off Plan It X records and they put on a fantastic show. Not only is the band one of the leaders of the new genre called folk/punk but I'm sure there is going to be very big things to come from them and it will always be from the heart. Defiance, Ohio Defiance, Ohio are perhaps one of the most compassionate and energetic leaders of the "folk/punk" movement. Their clever lyrics accompanied by fast, melodic, acoustic guitars make them very enjoyable to listen to.

Robinson December 2018 The thesis of Denny Alvarez is approved. _____________________________________ George Lipsitz _____________________________________ William I. Robinson _____________________________________ Casey Walsh, Chair December 2018 ACKNOWLEGEMENTS First and foremost, I want to thank the Latinx youth of Southern California who create, attend, perform, dance, and ultimately allow musical spaces of solidarity to exist. This includes but is not limited to those who agreed to the interviews but also to those who have made the effort for these spaces to exist long before I decided to write this thesis. Without their history of creative forms of expression and organization this study would not have been possible. Specifically, I want to thank Tony for being a point of reference, for introducing me to new people, and to potential interviewees. I extend my gratitude to Jonny of SoCal Syndicate who also provided me with invaluable information of the complex forms of organization that are needed for these spaces. It was truly inspiring to witness the amount of work and effort Jonny makes to create and sustain the musical space. I am also grateful to Jesus of Emphatic Entertainment for his insight and for the efforts he makes to extend the Ska scene beyond Los Angeles such as in Las Vegas and the Inland Empire.
