  • The Star of Yoga Guidance from the Light
The Star of Yoga Guidance from the Light (From an upcoming book “Meditation For the Monkey Mind”) By Mas Vidal As we look up to the night sky we get a spectacular glimpse of the vast galaxy we see from earth. Stars abound through out the sky like mini suns each creating their own distinct light, some forming clusters and interesting configurations. There is an inherent quality in humanity to feel an attraction to light, be it sunlight or open spaces. It makes sense as we have come to understand the science behind energy we know that like attracts like. We realize there is great value that comes from being in the light, which breeds an optimism and greater awareness. In general people feel a kinship towards one another when they share something in common. A star’s light is symbolic of the highest ideal of every human being to live in love, light and harmony (sat, chit andanda) with nature and all aspects of life. The ancients have always looked to the stars for guidance, healing and understanding the cycles of nature. A star’s five points symbolize a connection to the five great elements (pancha maha bhutas) and reflects the gradation of energy from gross (earth) to subtle (sky). The mystical star of yoga provides guidance on the journey towards enlightenment as various pathways, with each empowering us to reach the culmination or purna as the true yogic ideal of living a fully integrated lifestyle. Such integration is based on a balance between spirit and ecology thus reminding us of the importance of responsibility in our thoughts, words and actions that can either connect us or create greater divide from the Divine.

  • The Sikh Ceremonies
Training Aides The Sikh Ceremonies There are five key ceremonies in life that most Sikhs undergo. These inform who they are as Sikhs, how they should be raised and how they should live their life. The ceremonies can also be viewed as the five stages of life a person will go through: Janam Sanskar - birth Vidya Sanskar - education Amrit Sanskar - initiation Anand Karaj - marriage Antam Sanskar - death Janam Sanskar - birth When a child is born the first rite is to utter in his or her ear the name of God, Vaheguru (lit: Wonderful Enlightener God) along with the first stanza from the Sikh Scriptures, the Mool Mantar. These are uttered immediately to imprint them upon the child, in the hope that it grows up reciting them. After birth, as soon as he or she and the mother are in good health, the child will be initiated as a Sikh. A practising Sikh prepares nectar, amrit, by reciting the first Sikh Prayer, Japji Sahib, whilst stirring a kirpaan in a small iron bowl that has had water and puffs of sugar added to it. After the prayer, the amrit is administered first to the child, by putting five drops from the tip of the kirpaan into the baby’s mouth and then the mother is to drink the rest. She is instructed to breast feed the baby and the parents told the child has become a Sikh and is to be raised as a practising Sikh. They should endeavour to get the child fully initiated when he or she come of age, can practice wearing the 5 K’s and can keep the discipline.

Adrian J. Fernandes Masters in Theology (MTh) Institute of Philosophy and Religion Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth Pune, Maharashtra [email protected] An Appraisal on ‘Embracing the Other’ in Praxis: The Inherent Unifying Dynamics of Community Meal Services in Religion We know how special a meal is for a family and for any gathering. Eating together, being together and sharing from the same preparation builds bonds and deepens the commonality of a shared identity. This paper titled “An Appraisal on ‘Embracing the Other’ in Praxis: The Inherent Unifying Dynamics of Community Meal Services in Religion” attempts to present a practical approach of emulating the intrinsic values encapsulated within religious meal services. The presentation specifically focuses on Guru ka Langar in Sikhism and the Eucharist in Christianity. Guru ka Langar is a community kitchen run in the name of the Guru, usually attached to a Gurudwara. Guru Nanak, the first Guru of Sikhism, started this communal meal, the Langar, which has served two primary intended purposes; firstly in fostering the principle of equality between all peoples of the world regardless of religion, caste, colour, age, gender or social status and secondly to put into practice the spirit of humble, selfless social service, thus expressing the ethics of sharing, community living and inclusiveness. Jesus lived a life of selfless service and was endowed with supernatural capacities which were oriented for the welfare of the less fortunate ones in the society. Despite his enormous influence and power, he lived a simple and poor life and in humble service to humanity. In his last supper, although being their master, he washed the feet of his disciples and asked them to “do this in my memory” – that is, to embrace one another in love, service and humility.

  • The Hindu'saugust 15, 1947 Issue
COLLECTOR'S EDITION The Hindu’s August 15, 1947 issue From its birth as a weekly in September 1878, The Hindu became a powerful instrument of the Indian national movement that sought to overthrow British rule. It was hence tting that when freedom dawned, The Hindu welcomed it with characteristic aplomb, deep thought, and skillful penmanship. The Hindu's edition on August 15, 1947, along with a 32-page supplement, was a tribute to the freedom struggle, with articles by some of the greatest names of that age including V.K. Krishna Menon, India’s rst woman legislator Muthulakshmi Reddi, and the great educationist K.M. Munshi. It also carried striking images of the arrival of Independence, and riveting news from that tempestuous time. The Hindu's leading article on the historic day was characteristically pithy and powerful. Titled "Red letter day'', it said: "By the grace of Providence India enters the comity of free nations today, an equal among equals. It is an occasion for rejoicing not only for her people but for all who value human freedom as an end in itself. So long as this country with her hoary civilisation and many-sided culture, her wealth of resources and matchless opulence of spirit remained in political bondage, that very fact constituted an implicit denial of those values to which the dominant nations of the West were wont to pay lip service." Now, we are proud to share with our loyal subscribers, those very pages, articles, and images from which our readers got to know about the advent of freedom on August 15, 1947.
