Art Direction/Design: A to Z Communications The Pittsburgh Promise 2017-18 Annual Report 3 Doing right SIMONE QUINERLY RECEIVED ONE OF THE FIRST SCHOLARSHIPS Simone always intended to go to college, but with two older sisters in school at the same time, her family was unsure how they’d manage to pay for it. Fortunately for Simone, The Pittsburgh Promise was 2008 announced her senior year of high school. first scholarships In the fall of 2008, Simone went to Edinboro University, where she majored in finance. Her transition from high school to college was are given bumpy during her first semester. The cultural changes and academic rigor challenged her, and she had the grades to prove it. Simone committed herself to improving her grades. She asked for help and found services on campus like study groups and tutors. By her second semester, Simone’s grades had improved significantly. This experience VOICES inspired her to expand her involvement on campus which led to several leadership opportunities. Simone served as the Black Student Union president, president of the Student Government Association, treasurer for the dance team, and as a resident assistant. -

1 month of October in the city of Samarra by themselves. They 2 had the most contacts of any platoon in the entire battalion 3 and they suffered no casualties. There is no other platoon in 4 the battalion that can say that. He set up the first police 5 station in Balad and trained and monitored the Iraqis. 6 7 Balad was the geopolitical center of that region. It was 8 very unstable at the time and one of the hottest spots in Iraq. 9 Within a month we owned the city and built great relationships. 10 Subsequently, we spent a lot of money improving the 11 infrastructure. The periphery was mostly Sunni. Trying to 12 bring them into the government was difficult, but once we 13 controlled Balad and the city outlines, we controlled the 14 entire region. 15 16 Lieutenant Saville's platoon were the key to the success for 17 Alpha Company. He was put in for two bronze stars. His 18 rehabilitative potential is very high. He's very mature. Restored Preaching: Randy Spleth, Senior Minister Scripture: Job 42:1-6 Text: Job 42:7-10 E-mail: Randy Spleth The worst that can happen is behind the best person known. That’s where we are in this year’s Bible beach. In the Old Testament, the best person known is Job and over the last three weeks, we've looked at his story. It is a divinely inspired folk story, told for thousands of years around campfires to ask the question, why? If God is all-good and all- powerful, why do terrible things happen? It was likely acted out as an ancient play. It has four acts and two stages. That’s an important thing to remember. There is an upper stage in heaven and a lower stage on earth. You have the privilege of seeing both. The writer intends for us to have this unique perspective. But it’s crucial to understand that Job only knows what has happened on his stage.1 Let’s have a quick review. Scene one of Act 1 begins on the lower stage where we are introduced to the best person, Job. Job is incredibly rich, a Jeff Bezos rich in the ancient world with 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 pair of oxen, 500 donkeys, and many servants. He also has a large family, seven sons and three daughters. He was incredibly blessed and extraordinarily devoted to God, offering sacrifices not just for himself but also for his children, just in case they sinned. -
