1 JUNE 2021 MICHELLE 324 DISCOVERING FLORENCE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DANTE ALIGHIERI: “MUST-SEES” In 1265, one of the greatest poets of all time was born in Florence, Italy. Dante Alighieri has an incomparable legacy… After Dante, no other poet has ever reached the same level of respect, recognition, and fame. Not only did he transform the Italian language, but he also forever altered European literature. Among his works, “Divine Comedy,” is the most famous epic poem, continuing to inspire readers and writers to this day. So, how did Dante Alighieri become the father of the Italian language? 1 The Annunciation: symbolic functions of space in Renaissance depictions of the Annunciation In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus’ (Luke 1.26-31). The Annunciation is, together with the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, the most commonly depicted Biblical event of the Renaissance. Of these three events the Annunciation is interesting in terms of the space it depicts. The fundamental message of Christianity is the meeting of the divine and the human in the figure of Christ, the God-man. This meeting is prefigured by the Annunciation, where the divine (Gabriel) and the human (Mary) come together in a shared space. The Annunciation contains the Christian message within it like a seed, as indeed it is. To be born of flesh entails that Christ must suffer and eventually die; therefore this moment contains within it all that Christ means in terms of man’s redemption. The Annunciation provides the opportunity for the religious artist to investigate these ideas through the structural workings of the confinements of Mary’s dwelling. -

By Pierre Beaudry, 7/23/17 INTRODUCTION The difference between Raphael de Sanzio and Andrea di Bonaiuto in their artistic treatments of the fundamental differences between Plato and Aristotle is a matter of great importance for the epistemology of axiomatics, because it is timeless. Raphael explicitly represented the two philosophers in his painting, The School of Athens, as two opposite figures, one pointing upward to the domain of ideas and the other pointing downward to the domain of the senses. Almost a hundred and fifty years before, Andrea di Bonaiuto painted three frescos representing the same difference through a process of axiomatic transformation from one to the other in his masterful composition in the Spanish Chapel, in Florence. Imagine yourself entering the Spanish Chapel of Santa Maria Novella in Florence with one idea in mind: experiment the axiomatic change that Andrea di Bonaiuto has set the stage for you in three immense frescos. Garrard eminist scholars have effectively unmasked the misogynist messages of the Fstatues that occupy and patrol the main public square of Florence — most conspicuously, Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus Slaying Medusa and Giovanni da Bologna’s Rape of a Sabine Woman (Figs. 1, 20). In groundbreaking essays on those statues, Yael Even and Margaret Carroll brought to light the absolutist patriarchal control that was expressed through images of sexual violence.1 The purpose of art, in this way of thinking, was to bolster power by demonstrating its effect. Discussing Cellini’s brutal representation of the decapitated Medusa, Even connected the artist’s gratuitous inclusion of the dismembered body with his psychosexual concerns, and the display of Medusa’s gory head with a terrifying female archetype that is now seen to be under masculine control. GIOTTO AND MODERN ART* OT long ago I was led to the statement that we could N not understand modern art unless we understood Giotto-a statement that implied that the modern art move- ments have their sources in him. As a matter of fact, when we speak of the sources of any art movement, we are not on too solid ground. It is evident that there are powerfuI under- lying forces which influence and shape art forms, but to lo- cate the source of any style in a specific person means only to recognize the artistic criteria of the moment-standards which are as varied and changeable as that much desired quality which we caIl Beauty. Not too many years ago contemporary painting boasted free and virile brush strokes. This direct painting, then con- sidered the height of modernism, was shown as the direct descendant of Frans Hals and Velasquez. The imitative art of the 19th and 20th centuries looked for its sources in the illusionism of the Italian Renaissance and saw Masaccio as the father of modern painting. Then as subjective expression gradually replaced objective imitation, El Greco was rediscovered as the forefather of modern painting. With so many paternal ancestors already claimed, let us not fall into the error of putting still another father of modern art in the roots of the family tree. *This lecture was illustrated by lantern slides. In an attempt to clarify the allu- sions, the title and author of each illustration are printed in a marginal note at the point in the text that the illustration was used. -

My thesis offers the first full exploration of the literature and art associated with the Genoese noblewoman Simonetta Cattaneo Vespucci (1453-1476). Simonetta has gone down in legend as a model of Sandro Botticelli, and most scholarly discussions of her significance are principally concerned with either proving or disproving this theory. My point of departure, rather, is the series of vernacular poems that were written about Simonetta just before and shortly after her early death. I use them to tell a new story, that of the transformation of the historical monna Simonetta into a cultural icon, a literary and visual construct who served the political, aesthetic and pecuniary agendas of her poets and artists. -

I may be an unbeliever, but I am an unbeliever who has a nostalgia for a belief. — Pier Paolo Pasolini (1966)1 Uccellacci e uccellini (Hawks and Sparrows), Courtesy Photofest 1 Heavenly Earth: Visions of Saint Francis in Italian Cinema SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI (1181/1182 – 1226) was a complex and contradictory figure in religious history. The son of a wealthy silk merchant, he indulged in many of the youthful pleasures and pursuits that his station in life afforded. He was familiar with sin, as he later admitted, and was also ambitious, longing for prestige and status. Francis only slowly came to alter his life of pleasure. As a young soldier he fought in a minor conflict between Assisi and Perugia during which he was taken prisoner and held captive for a year. He became ill and be- gan to experience doubts about the life he had led up to this point. Upon his release, however, his ambition to become a great knight returned. His princely ambitions were finally shaken by two prophetic dreams that turned his thoughts toward the spiritual life. -

The majolica collection of the Museum of Bargello A different approach to the Museum exhibition Leonardo ZAFFI, University of Florence, Department of Architecture, Italy Stefania VITI, University of Florence, Department of Architecture, Italy Keywords: Museum of Bargello, Majolica collection, design of Museums staging, resilience of Museums Introduction Nowadays the art exhibitions cannot just show the art collections, but they need to emotionally involve the visitors. The Museums users are not anymore scholars and experts only; many of them are non-specialists, wishful for evocative emotions and multi-disciplinary experiences. These new requirements, together with the need to preserve the art collections from the possible dangers (the time-effects, the natural disasters as much as human attacks), lead the new technology to play a crucial role in the design of the exhibitions layout. The design of a new art exhibition requires the involvement of many different technical and artistic knowledges. This research is focused on the design of the majolica collection exhibited at Museum of Bargello of Florence, which has been founded in 1865 as first National Museum in Italy. The Museum presents several art collections of high value, very different from each other. Even the displays exhibited at the Museum present a large variety, due to the different properties of the collections to exhibit and to the age of the staging design. Since the Museum foundation to nowadays, indeed, several displays have been followed one another, and some of them have become part of its asset. The current curators, therefore, have to deal with the double need i) to renew the exhibition, in order to guarantee the high profile of the Museum, and to optimize the expressive potentiality of each art good, and ii) to protect the art collections, providing to each item the due safety. -
